Any level of Government spending less money is differently a plus, we all know that there are vast areas of waste and fraud in almost every Governmental Unit, and now at least one level of Government will have to take a sharp pencil to their operations and maybe, along with the possibility of Merit Pay for the best teachers, and a focus on academics our schools will improve academically.
Thorthon should be fired for agreeing to a contract before budget came out knowing stimulus funding was ending. The school board should just say we will keep some teachers then in 2 years have them pay the whole pension contribution until costs are paid back with interest. Unions play hard the school board has to play as hard for the kids as the unions and Democrats play against the kids.
Charles, you Scott Walker cult members, of which you are obviously a member, don't give a damn about teachers, workers, poor people, or anyone else who isn't a billionaire. Hike the billionaires and corporate taxes, and quit beating up on working people. But, hey,, that would hurt your Messiah Scott Walker, so you can't have that can you?
Did you listen to the report? Every school that signed the deal is in good financial shape. Only MPS, whose union prevented the signing, is in the hole. They are the only school district that has to make major layoffs. My cousin was laid off because he was a new teacher. Charles isn't in the Scott Walker cult, the union is willing to lay off good young teachers so it can keep bad old ones. If they're willing to lay off good teachers, they clearly don't care for teachers or students.
I'm so glad that the thing in Wisconsin was publicized so much. We were able to see what thugs they were, what damage they did to the capitol. We were able to see how obnoxious some of them were - on video. And we started realizing that teachers have been lying for years about how little them make. They quote their net pay and get everyone feeling sorry for them. And people forget that when that special ed teacher is making $62,000 per year, it's for 9-10 months work.
Yep. They sky didn't fall in Wisconsin. The reforms have worked. Teachers - heaven forbid - have to pay SOME of their own health insurance and pensions. Boo hoo. One school district went from a $400,000 deficit to a $1.5 million surplus and were able add teachers and reduce class size. (Now that's helping the kids, folks.) In that same school district, teachers had to start working 40 hours per week instead of 37. Again, boo hoo.
THE PIE spells out the bigger problem with educationin in Wisc & many states in the country, & that is PRIORITIES.
less money for education... MORE money for PRISONS.
less money for education... MORE money for corporate/upper-income TAX BREAKS.
if education were treated seriously in Wisc & other states, then 25% of that pie for "everything else" would be more than 25%. spending on "everything else" is DELIBERATELY made small to make people think we spend too much on teachers pensions.
I see a lot of people talking here that have no idea WTF they are talking about. MPS is going fine and test scores are still climbing. The increase that was decided on in the next few years has all been in part because of the understanding teachers will have to pay their own way and that means actually after 2013 even with the small increase percentage each year they will end up making less money then they are making now in 2010. Get a clue.
I guess I'm a union thug...one that teaches your kids. Rape and pillage the people who educate your children...good idea. It sucks to be so underappreciated by the “elite”. That’s in quotes for a reason. Your office job is so much more important than mine. By the way, a school is not a business. Thanks for the support in and out of school!
Thank you Fox 6 for not being a liberal biased News station on this issue ---- see WISN. Replace old complacent employees with NEW fresh energetic teachers who want their job.
Do you find it odd the unions have only pushed thru contracts in order to lock in union dues? And lock in their union owned WEA health insurance? One district the teachers voted YES to change from overpriced WEA union owned health insurance to one that cost less and unions said NO. 75/93 districts so far report savings with the new bill in place.
What a crock. “We don’t want to hurt the kids”! Yeah having teachers pay into their pensions and chipping in on their health care really hurts the children!!! Keep in mind that the teachers would be paying FAR LESS than most Americans, as well as most Americans don’t even have pensions anymore. A teacher making $40,000 a year takes home more income than a typical W2 wage earner making $60,000 a year.
Hey spotschmoop, I don't know what video you were watching, but I didn't hear anybody "blame teachers" for anything. If there was any blame it seems to be directed at the union leaders who refuse to budge to allow good motivated teachers to keep their jobs, just like they're doing here in Janesville
Milwaukee Public Schools isn't about education in the first place. It is a baby sitting service. Sorry, but when the statistics are as dismal as they are at MPS, the only kids that are learning anything are the ones who are doing it on their own. In other words, it wouldn't be much worse if there was no schools there at all.
This is extremely biased reporting. Teachers are blamed when students don't "perform". All of the teachers I know do not call it "performing", but LEARNING. Before you make judgments that teachers should be retained because of an annual "performance", GO TO THE CLASSROOM and volunteer. You'll notice that public school teachers must deal with several factors out of their control, yet try to teach those children who are open to learning. It is an extremely difficult position to be in.
So paying teachers less will keep proformence the same?
BTW, teaching isnt a 8-3 job you have to grade papers, make tests, help kids after and before school etc

MPS made their bed. You can see the union there DOES NOT GIVE A DAMN about teachers or kids. They only crave money and power.

3:47 you can see that they still get an 8.7% raise (3%, 2.5% and 3%) between 2010 and 2013.
