You could also use wooden slabs to make the fireplace, as it has the same properties as a stone slab and then just put netherack in with fire on top.

The unfortunate part is that it is a sprite-based fire, meaning that no matter what direction you look at the fire, it always appears flat. ass opposed to the fire of netherrack. You can have a fire that doesnt burn down wood, you just need to make sure a 3x3x8 area around the fire is all non-air blocks. Torches, pressure plates, half slabs etc should do the job.
