I'm not trying to step on any toes, but while I will admit it's sad that the guy is alone, I'm not really feeling sorry for him. Remember, it said he 'murdered' Kathryn, murder implying an act either done out of anger or premeditated. Either way, he deliberately killed Kathryn. So to me, it feels more like justice that he'd kill someone and realize he screwed up so bad he went nuts, rather than he deserves to be felt sorry for. I'm more inclined to feel good about his misery than bad.
@DarkMetalMusic Not every murder is like that. There are many situations where people can not control themselves in a fit of rage. Honestly, if you were pushed to such a point, it could happen to anyone. Furthermore, we do not have any background information as to why he did it, or even if he actually killed her. Remember, many people are accused and trialed wrongly. That psychiatrist looks like s/he has absolutely no idea what's happening; not too reliable.
@iHibird I can only go on what it says though, so all I can say in the end is that it is stated he killed her, and if he didn't I don't see how he could have lost mind like he did. All the same, and perhaps it's because I'm about the logic, but in the end I don't feel sorry for him as sad as it is to say, I lack the sympathy.
@DarkMetalMusic That's still extremely insensitive of you to say, just because YOU wouldn't have done something like that. This guy isn't like regular minded people, he's mentally ill. We don't even know his condition. What if he was schizophrenic and killed her unintentionally due to conditions created by his hallucinations? or if he just has a mental condition that caused him to kill her without knowing it? Does he deserve a life of loneliness because of that?
@DarkMetalMusic I feel like in playing this game you missed the point of the story entirely. The whole thing, the dialouge, the concept, the very physical nature of the levels themselves all paint a picture to help us sympathize with someone who deals with mental disorders. Even just the last level is laden with metaphor about the daily struggles he faces. Look how he jumps and jumps keeps making the same mistakes over and over again and yet he keeps jumping because he can't remember it.
@ryeguy48 Even so, I can read a million variables, but I don't see the sympathy. Maybe I am insensitive, so I apologize, but from the way I see it he killed her, and it is just as likely he did it intentionally. I have no information to go on, so I can't assume it was an accident.
look this game up on wiki newgrounds... it says at the end jack says "and suddenly i have no one to tell my story to" and the wiki says he remembers the phyco anylyst visits but is to paralyzed by what has happened to ever be normal again. its a sad game. im not gonna cry over it but it is very sad.. it sounds like a true story. i can tell alot of thought was put into this game, and it should be made up into a movie but without all the jumping. just the dialogue and all.
I like to think of myself as a pretty level headed, normal person, but damn, this little flash game moved me beyond words. the look of it, the story, the music.
)`: When it says in the end ARE YOU REALLY LEAVING? It makes me think about the pepole that is really alone in the life... Just like him... It makes me cry.
This ending depresses me so much... makes me wonder why I always come back and watch it again and again ): Though I know it's pointless to ponder the meaning of a game ending, but perhaps he's right in only feeling somewhat responsible for Kathryn's death. Maybe he wasn't the one who did it. Just always gets me, this ending.
I'm still thinking if he killed her or not. I mean he didn't have a mental illness of forgetting when he meet Kathryn but the reports says he kills her and then puts flowers on her grave? You don't do that when you murder someone. And the fact that he traumatized himself is crazy because if he did do it, he would know.. Maybe he was drugged or something and meet the person that made him a hermit and hated that person so much and saw him or her as Kathryn. Just guessing.
Wooow, I know I'll get about 50 thumbs down, but you people have other things to do than cry about a game, that must not of taken long to make, but really... You people are over-sensitive...
The green makeshift coffin is the green "door" at the end of every level and the flowers, the start point and the checkpoint are the two flowers he left for her.
@RadiantGarden000 that makes sense. And by the "severe mental illness", he seems to live his whole life jumping around reaching the green door. or maybe I am wrong?
Even in the gameplay, you kill her by pulling the lever, and in the backstory, it says that he killed her. What's not to understand, people? The CAUSE of death isn't told, but it's telling us that he killed her.
@ogonga94 I know I loled at that part. Really, puzzle solving duo? You two forgot that gray lever makes gray blocks poof? Did not see that coming, did you?
Massive plot hole of an ending. We're only told that it was murder. There's no actual explanation as to the cause of death. Only that she was found buried in a green makeshift coffin. Thus it's entirely plausible that she died of natural causes, or committed suicide, and he simply buried her, followed by him entering a catatonic state. And that's not entirely unprecedented.
When I beat this game I was like.. wtf. They kind of ruined it. It's not sad, it's retarded.. What's sad about him murdering someone he loved? The guy's a fuck up.
what could have been more sad? he lived his entire life alone, and once he found the only person that loved him, she died, could this be a true story ?

So the story is about a jealous boyfriend who murdered his girlfriend, yet portrays himself as a victim in his own reality. Interesting.
