It seems odd because it's not the ideal platform for AR(holding up a phone). In a couple years this app might run on your sunglasses instead of your phone along with a bunch of other passive information services.

Agreed, I'm guessing that it's using the video from the camera to track movement on the earlier iPhones. Possibly using the compass on the new 3GS.
