  • OMG i have to read this book, hollywood better not try and fuck this up with a movie.

  • @sexayassmusic They already did...15 years ago.

  • Both the movie and the book are graphic on different levels. With the book, you visualize what's going on in your head, and Dorothy is very good with descriptions. But in the movie, you don't have to visualize it. It's right there, being played out for you.

  • What a brilliant vibrant beautiful woman. She's a national treasure.

  • Wow, I really wish ppl would realize that incest happens in more homes then we think. It happened in my home and I'm still recovering from the trauma =[

  • I'm so sorry about that @Alixblood. I do think some people are waking up to the reality because brave souls like Dorothy Allison are telling their stories.

If you can, tell yours. You will probably make someone feel less alone. And there is no shame in telling your story because you didn't do anything wrong!

Stay strong. Even the act of recovery is a brave one :)

  • great author. it's sad her book gets banned virtually everywhere

  • It's sad that it's easier for the unwashed masses to stay ignorant to incest and child abuse than it is for them to be educated about the problem and face it head on. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away, you'd think that our species would have realized that by now?

  • I was actually at that event of which she spoke. She got the name a little confused--it was Farmington, Maine, not "Framington." The book had caused controversy in some of the local schools, and the University of Maine at Farmington ended up having this event. I bought a copy of her book and got it signed by her!!!!

  • Maybe it wasn't at the exact same event, but it was in that town. She mentioned it was a high school gymnasium, while the event I went to was at a college auditorium. It was a long time ago, so maybe she just got some of the details mixed up, too.

  • Hello Dorothy!I took karate with Alex.Saw her in that little store in Gueneville. Had a funny and interesting conversation...about turkey basters if I recall. Was looking at some random pictures a friend had taken of a Pride Parade and there you and Alex are just rolling by.Would be happy to send it to you. Thank you for the fine interview, you helped that "big guy" as well as many others. You are my hero, looks like you sure pulled ol' Ted Turner into a reality he didn't expect!Good for you!

  • very good book. i'm currently reading it with my class. so did this actually happpen to the author or is she retelling some1 elses experience. sorry i just wanted to make sure.

  • Ms. Allison, I once met you on the campus of Orange Coast College in California. I told you I was working on a novel and you said, "How long have you been working at it?" I said, "Two years." Your said, "Well, only eight more to go!" Well, I know you meant it as an encouragement, but I hope you weren't right! Cheers. Yours is a great, fine book, by the way.

  • That's one of my favorite books! Good work Ms Allison

  • I look forward to studying the real book.
