The first time I was listening to this album I was walking around with earphones. When Lou sang "When people say her feet smell they mean her nose", I couldn't help laughing loud in the street... Everybody looked at me as a dangerous psychopatic laughing alone!!!!
everything bowie touched turned to gold (and ronson too for that matter). lou's sound was fully realized when he teamed up with david, just like iggy pop reached his full potential with him. and that's not to say lou and iggy weren't fucking brilliant themselves. rather it's a testament to how important a good producer is, even to the most talented mucisians. hell, bowie himself understood this, and that's why he always chose to work with another great set of ears, case and point tony visconti
Heard this song for the first time a couple months ago and now I can't stop listening to it, and all of Transformer, really. Lou Reed is the physical embodiment of cool.
Is this song about warhol ? What a price those young guys in the mid sixties must of paid for hi endorsement. I am sure he got to manipulate them guys into sexual services to get some recoognition for their artistic creativity!
this record is/was life changing. when hormonal aspiring fags discover they are not alone, is life affirming. just like the new york dolls. lou sneered in the face of conformity and said lets go, motherfucker. god bless andy warhol!
There is one fucking catch with democracy, and that's freedom of speach , which makes us other people suffffer having to read statements like previous one!
Note that the Transfomer is the one off the three best albums that came out same year. The other two are Bowie " The Man who sold the world", and Roxy Music "For your pleasure" I wont mention Zappa here becouse he is chaper off his own!
@somervillain ok, think about the lyrics in 'satellite of love' for a moment. eg: 'i watched it for a little while; i like to watch things on tv'? wtf?
@Shermanicus one of the best lines from a song i think ever. you have apparently totally misunderstood the direction of the song, and album for that matter. ps. go ask radiohead and beck what they think about transformer. love you.
@somervillain ok, think about the lyrics in 'satellite of love' for a moment. eg: 'i watched it for a little while; i like to watch things on tv'? wtf?
@rustylegiron 1) you wouldn't recognise the name anyway because nobody goes by their real name on youtube genius...or was your birth name Rustylegiron? 2) you don't have to be able to write lyrics to know what's good and what isn't...that's the fucking worst logic i've heard this week...you want real music and lyrics? i'll happily direct you to radiohead, arcade fire, beck, atlas sound, the shins...the list goes on, but this shit ain't on it
@Shermanicus Touche :-) all good music but we will have to agree to disagree when it comes to Lou Reed, the New York album is one of the best ever recorded imho of course :-)
@Shermanicus well, you're saying radiohead, arcade fire, beck, atlas sound, the shins. They're great and i like them, but Lou Reed requires a little bit from the listener. That's hard to ever understand for non musical people and i'm sorry, but i think you're one of them. Lou Reed is sophisticated in some way, there is a reason he sings the way he does - but you will never understand :)
@Shermanicus oh.. it's very patronising but you miss the point. Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Beck and The Shin are all pop bands. Lou Reed is not, Velvet Underground is not. You probably love Muse too, don't you?
@Vesters1 1) no, i don't like muse 2) radiohead is one of the world's most respected non-pop bands...non of those bands are really pop, the closest is beck 3) the velvet underground was by no means an underground band, but might even be categorised as pop-rock in their era (incidentally, i like the velvet underground, i just reckon lou reed solo is overrated)...seriously, stop acting so fucking paternal, you don't know enough about music; and transformer was a very ordinary album
@Shermanicus Oh, velvet underground was so fucking influential, it's the first protopunk band ever. They made up the whole sound of punk and non-hippie rock music together with Bob Dylan, who you dislike too because of his weird voice (right?). Radiohead is pop music, i think a lot of modern "indie-rock" and "alternative" rock is pop, rock itself often is pop - Lou Reed just isn't, he is making art. I'm acting just as provocative as you were earlier during this "discussion".
@Vesters1 1) uh, i love bob dylan...stop profiling because this is the second time you've been wrong 2) indie is not pop tard 3) the only ever real punk band was the clash and the only ever real punk album was london calling...why don't i close this conversation so you don't need to regale me anymore with your pretentiousness...i love 'walk on the wildside', 'perfect day' and 'satellite of love'...the rest was overrated
If the cops are looking for a crackhead nigger with pink hair that just robbed and murdered an old white woman for $22 it is against the niggers civil rights if the cops arrest him .
how dare those evil white police use that crackhead niggers profile.
@Shermanicus I think that you overlook the collective point of the album. Lou Reed's self proclaimed goal was to create the equivalent of the "Great American Novel" in the form of a rock and roll album. This album revolves around the time he spent in the influence of Andy Wathol and those character/ personas that were present in the "Factory". All the 'overrated songs' contribute to the albums themes and perspective that made it so significant at the time.
@Shermanicus There were no weak tracks on Transformer. You just mustn't have given them a chance, I bet you just listened to the whole album once and played the tracks that initially stood out. Transformer is one of the most important records ever made.
@Shermanicus i'd say there are only 2 mediocre tracks. not his best album. but still a great album. i can see where you're coming from though if you like his later stuff more
Yes,.......... Davey Jones at the mixing board and Jimmy Osterberg cutting the white lines in full view of the Russian's soldiers' binoculors on the other side of the wall - those were the days in Berlin!
Yes i definatley think Berlin would of been a great plac to be circa late seventies, actually from what i read in David Byrnes book 'Bicycle Diaries' it still sounds a very interesting and vibrant pace to be,I would very much like to go there :).
@MrLuciferSam and don't forget eno lurking in the shadows and looking for strange things to make music with. ahh to be a fly on the wall . . . (even the backing musicians were fucking legends)
