I've had this camera since February of 2010 and I absolutely love it. I have absolutely no desire to upgrade to a new camera body anytime soon because I'm so happy with my D3000. It's my very first DSLR and I've built up a nice collection of different lenses. I highly recommend this camera to anoyone, especially if you're new to DSLR cameras. I've learned so much on it. Even when I do eventually upgrade to a newer Nikon body, I will never get rid of my D3000.
I have the D3000 with the 18-55mm Standard, Say I wanted to shoot long range Outdoor Day/Night Concerts, the Sky at night, what lens would you recommend? Just something simple for a learner. Thanks. :)
@DaniSixxxx a long focal length lens like the nikon 55-200mm or 55-300mm should suit your needs. For star and moon photography, be sure to bring a tripod and set the aperture to around f22. As a bonus, the 55-200/300mm lenses are also great for portraits and action photography.
Ive had my D3000 since christmas, and although i'm fairly familiar with cameras in general, this was my first DSLR, and i didnt know this had the features you mentioned in this video.lol ^_^
@BreastfeedingNatural no need to upgrade. I would keep the canon xs and improve your photography as much as possible with that camera. When you feel you need to upgrade, take a step up to a mid-tier camera, like the canon 60d / nikon d7000.
I bought this camera not too long ago and at the same time my brother bought a Canon (can't recall the model) and althought i LOVE my camera i noticed that the colors in the Canon seem more vivid and strong. Is there a way to get the colors of my D3000 to a Canon level?
@Jyan84 try setting the Picture Control to vivid. You will find the setting under Menu --> Camera --> Picture Control. You can also leave it set to standard but turn up the saturation. That will give your stronger colours.
@klausboedker : wierd.. I was looking exactly for the opposite. I think photos without strong colours more beautiful, and every place I see they say Nikon has stronger colours than Canon. I also saw that the Canon eos 1000D has a "color tone" in its setting. I would like to know if this Nikon has something similar, to let it less vivid.
Okay. Can you help me with this ? When you are on manual mode of the D3000. I am suppose to adjust the numbers on it. Eg, 1/4000. 1/250. What does this actually mean ? What does 1/4000 ( the least ), 1/250 ( the most ) mean ? When can you use each of it ?
@Jubiczx sounds like you are referring to shutter speed. 1/4000 is, well, 1/4000 of a second. Likewise, 1/250 is a quarter of a second. The slower the shutter speed (the lower the number), the more light is let into the sensor.
Hi. Great review! Im thinking about getting this camera as my first DSLR. My dad is into photography and thinks you need some auto and some manual features for things like aperture, focus etc. Would you recommend it for my needs?
@acdc301 absolutely. The Nikon D3000 is one of my favorite entry-level DSLRs. It will allow you to both shoot in auto and manual mode, so you should have plenty of room to grow your photography.
The only thing I will point out is Nikon's new D3100, the successor to the D3000. I am just wrapping up a review of the camera, and it really raises the bar of the D3000 adding even more great features, including 1080p HD video. Be sure to look for the review in a couple of days.
@drgregur Have only reviewed the Canon XSi, and not the XS or 1000D. But compared to the XSi, I would give the Nikon D3000 a minimal edge. It just has more features (as called out in the video) that I like.
All three are great, very capable entry-level DSLRs, though.
I have buy this camera, and it should come today at the day :) And i am so exited! :) I not gonna stop taking photos I think... Oooh i'm so exited (sorry for my bad english, but i hope u understand what i trying to say) ^^
@physco479 If I have understood correctly it doesn't matter wether you have a 4, 8 or 16 GB SDHC card. What decides the speed is the class number, the higher the speed the more data(pictures) you can save in the same amount of time. So class 10 card would be the best. * Class 2: 16 Mbit/s (2 MB/s) * Class 4: 32 Mbit/s (4 MB/s) * Class 6: 48 Mbit/s (6 MB/s) * Class 10: 80 Mbit/s (10 MB/s)
(wikipedia^^)
16 Gigs only gives you more space in one single card, that's it.
quick question....I am starting off with DSLRs...I am stuck between the Nikon D3000 and the Canon rebel XS..(both entry level)....Which one is a better camera in terms of features, learning curve and overall image quality....?...I know most photographers are brand loyal and brand biased. Hoping to get an unbiased answer from u..:)...thank you in advance..:)

@KrisMo327 yep, you can use an external flash. The D3000 even supports Nikon's CLS (creative lighting system), meaning you can trigger a flash wirelessly using the pop-up flash.
im too busy to watch this video, so a quick question, does it take video? if it does, does it take good video? and when your taking a video, does it zoom in pretty fast>? thanks!
@klausboedker Haha thanks for the quick reply, i went on best buy's site and finally figured out it doesnt have video :( i posted on like 10 videos to see if it has video, lol, im thinking on getting this or the Pentax KX, i eant a good dslr camera with video, the pentax does, just a bit pricey for me tho
@datzfast for that there is an option on the main screen...press + on the left side of the camera...then go to option below the ISO then choose 2nd option
@datzfast well the D3000 is supposed to take 3 pics per second so what i do is hold the button half way down and when i take the pic i press all the way down then go back up to half way. it makes pic taking a WHOLE lot faster. hope i helped :)
@datzfast if you take active d-lighting off and change picture quality to normal it should continue to take a photo for as long as you hold the shutter button down
Easy, switch to Manual focus on your lens, then use the Manual mode (M), look inside the viewfinder and press lightly the shutter button.
If you keep on seeing inside the viewfinder you'll see the 11 focus points becoming red. Right now, use the arrows control buttons of your camera to select one of the 11 point.
I hope to have been useful. Feel free to correct me klaus if I'm wrong =)
I just got this camera today and it looks really nice so far. This is my first SLR camera, so I didn't want anything too complicated. So far, this seems perfect for me. I have just purchased several lenses on ebay and I can't wait to really start shooting!
just bought D3000.. i cant seem to change the focus points!!! please help! i did it once but cant seem to do it again. what settings should the camera be on to do it? thanks!
Bought the Nikon D3000 at camera house here in Sydney comes with two lens (18-55 mm and 55-200mm), 4 gig sd card, camera bag, tripod and filters for $1200 AU dlrs. not a bad deal.

@joyindian i have been using this camera for over 4-5 months now...and have used canon rebel as well....i say go for nikon d3000 its is much more better than canon...u can say there is no comparison...hold both the cameras in ur hand and you know
i used to use fujifilm j150w10mega pixels, and i just got the nikon d3000.
ive never used such a complicated camera before. everytime i zoom and unzoom,do i always have to keep adjusting the 'focus' lens? :/ because i have taking a close up photo and then taking another photo with more distance and having it come up blurry
i appreciate that you reply to questions. i have a question. i am interested in photography, my old camera is a sony cypershot 7 megapixels lol. i am probably gonna buy this camera. i was wondering if $629.97 is a good deal for the nikon d3000 slr and the package comes with the case and a lens, 55-200mm. And what are the main uses for that lens? THANKS because i am clueless.
@irinasemchuk1: $630 seems like a decent deal. Just make sure that the 18-55mm kit lens and 55-200mm lens are VR (vibration reduction). The 55-200mm VR lens is great for distant subjects, be it wildlife or kids playing soccer. It also doubles as a great portrait lens due to the longer focal length nicely compressing/blurring the background. Read more in my written review (see video info for link).
thanks! but I bought the Nikon d5000 and it was taking blurry pictures even on automatic and didnt flash sometimes even when it was dark. I guess it was defected. I returned it and got the Canon T1i- and its amazing. I love it.
yes, it clocks in @ 3 fps. Not necessarily 'sports mode', but OK. You would be surprised how much an additional frame or frame and a half (4 fps and 4.5 fps) means when shooting something fast-paced. If sports is your thing, I would suggest looking @ the D5000 (4 fps) or D90 (4.5 fps).
yeah thanks i couldent find that information d5000 it a little out of my range for price i am comparing to a rebel xs im realy looking at the nikon thanks again for the reply
I was wondering; which camera would you recommend, this or the D40? I wanted to get the D3000, but then read some reviews and looked into it and found out that it's worse because it has a larger numbre of megapixels on the same sensor as the D40. On Ken Rockwell's website, he showed that the D40 has less noise at higher ISO than the D3000
@rockergrrrl: admittedly, I have not shot with the D40, but considering that the camera is more then three years old, that to me is reason enough to pick up the D3000 instead. The sensor is not that bad, but if you're a looking for something better, consider the D5000. I am just wrapping up a review, so be sure to check for a link to my blog (in the D5000 video) any time soon. Thanks.
PS: I would take anything KR writes with a large grain of salt.
Sorry, replied before reading the other comments. The Nikon 18-55mm VR lens is actually not that bad. If you are looking to buy the D5000, I would go for the version with this kit lens over buying a Sigma 18-50mm lens on the side. Unless you are talking about the f2.8 model. If that's the case, you should also consider the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. A very sharp lens.
Thanks for the video review and the website review. Do you own the camera? I'm more interested in the noise issues the D3000 has at higher ISOs and how important this actually is in the grand scheme of taking pictures. Would this noise issue be reduced by using a prime lens?
At long last a video of the D3000. Thanks for posting. How's the ISO sensitivity performance? I read the D40 outperforms the D3000 in terms of noise suppression.
Thanks for posting this. It helps to get an opinion from someone who's been using those other cameras, and having comments on them helps (there are are enough videos that list features, which can be more easily read than listened to). Any big weaknesses or issues with the D3000 you could add?
@kw98027 check my full review linked on my blog on seeingthemoment(dot)com (just search for D3000 -- sorry youtube does not allow html in comment field)

Thanks.
PS: I would take anything KR writes with a large grain of salt.

does that lens have the extra focusing ring at the front of the camera?
dancinchik88 2 years ago
Yep, you can use it for manual focusing. :)

Yeah, it does. It's the 18-55mm VR lens.

Which Lens is that?

I'm pretty sure that it is one that came with the kit, for I got the same one from the kit. It is a Nikor 18-55m

Okay, i was a bit confused, bacause it's so small.
But Thank you anyway. (:

it's the nikon 18-55mm VR lens that in most cases comes with the camera. Great little lens.
klausboedker 2 years ago
I noticed that now, thanks.
Well I'm going to buy it with a Sigma 18/50mm Lens for 449€ is that good?
OlliTheAwesomeone 2 years ago
Sorry, replied before reading the other comments. The Nikon 18-55mm VR lens is actually not that bad. If you are looking to buy the D5000, I would go for the version with this kit lens over buying a Sigma 18-50mm lens on the side. Unless you are talking about the f2.8 model. If that's the case, you should also consider the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. A very sharp lens.

Okay thanks, i will say that to Santa ;DD

Thanks for the video review and the website review. Do you own the camera? I'm more interested in the noise issues the D3000 has at higher ISOs and how important this actually is in the grand scheme of taking pictures. Would this noise issue be reduced by using a prime lens?

So what is ISO? I want a really fast shutterspeed, the fastest, which i think is 3 pics per seconds. I really want this!

I'm stuck choosing between the Xsi, the d60, and the d3000.
I would most likely be shooting portrait/artsy photos.
It's also going to have to last through some Photography courses.

i would go with the d3000 as i have heard the d60 is being discontinued

At long last a video of the D3000. Thanks for posting. How's the ISO sensitivity performance? I read the D40 outperforms the D3000 in terms of noise suppression.

Thanks Klaus for posting this. You did a great job of explaining this neat new DSLR.
