>paulybarr, I have an imperfect answer for your question. He was a sudden substitute for this performance. Performance of Gurrelieder is very rare so we can't expect a tenor who can sing this role as a usual repertoire. Fortunately he had sung this role eight months before. It was the closest date for this music.
Whyyyyyyyyyyyy do peeeeeeeeeeeeeeopppppppleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee take Gurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrelieeeeeeeeeederrrrrrrr so sloooooooooooooooooooooowly
I have never understood why singers in oratorio keep their eyes glued to their scores, as if they were sight-reading. Do you carry the score around with you on the opera stage? This tenor ( whoever he is) is terrific but he doesn't know ( or doesn't trust himself that he knows) the music well enough to sing more than one bar at a time with refering back to the bloody score. Jesus mate, come on- it's the most gorgeously memorable music in the world ! You'd better never attempt Moses und Arron!
