Thanks so much for making these vids, ive made 3 of these now and love just sitting back inside when its dark and rainy and listen to the sounds of the woods mixed with the rain, really takes the stress away.
Dave you know what your doing and your a huge influence to me. Ive watched hundreds of your videos and have attempted almost all the structures, traps, and weapons your made. since 2011 i have caught 5 rabbits, 6 squerrills, 4 birds, found over 50 different types of edible plants, and made 4 different types of shelters.I have almost perfected the art of the bow drill. I owe all my success to you and would just like to tell you to continue what your doing, because your inspiring alot of people.
If you were to heat up rocks for a few hours around a campfire and then roll them into the shelter, would they be able to keep you warm through the night?
@spectatorsg22 Yes, what I do is roll the hot rocks onto my sleeping bag about an hour before I go to bed (once they're cool enough to touch - don't melt your sleeping bag!), but once you go to bed, you can cuddle up to them just like a hot-water-bottle, and they keep you toasty all night!
18 STUPID MORONS DON'T LE THIS VIDEO ARE YOU NUTS!!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!!!! THE 18 MORONS WOULD BE THE ONES TO RUN TO A GUY LIKE THIS FOR HELP WHEN THE SH*T HITS THE FAN.....
I love this shelter I built something that was the same design and it worked great. I spent two nights out in my woods and kept adding to the shelter. This shelter is amazing one of the days/nights it rained relatively hard and the only place it leaked was by the door where the cover was not as strong but that was my fault. I still stayed dry and warm with the fire i made inside and I was able to use the rock to heat some water one morning and it worked great. Thank you for the design.
not sure how much birch in your space but the bark can be used for so much from containers to roof shingles.More stones for fire proping you could even have a fire place built chimney and all just some thoughts.and you could heat up rocks by water then toss then in to make flints spear/arrow heads or build a sweat lodge. and building a wall with wood frame and dirt to reflect fires heat back to the shelter doorway helps. And maybe use dirt, clay would be best to help your bebris solidify

This part of the video was helpful. I recently went camping with a tarp tent and seen what a fire with a reflector wall did when larger or small...It was about 55 degrees at the coldest (maybe less) and I was comfortable. I was wanting to know what else I would need to do if it was colder and I didn't have a spider shelter.
A way you can make a chimeny and keep it water proof while it open during rain it make a over hang over the chimeny. if you would try it out, nice videos. keep up the good work. also how long does it take to make this,
Nice looking shelter and great fire idea. I prefer my fire with deflector outside the hut and down wind. I bet if you get the proper type and amount of coals glowing in that thing they last a long time. Good job and thanks for sharing!
Good call about the exploding rocks dave! Back in the day I got popped realy good by a hot exploding rock, learned my lesson the hard way lol : ) Was just thinkin bout it when u started to give us the warning!
I had an idea you might like. Tie the lattace overhang together then tie the whole square of lattace to shelter. Put another lattace square on top and sort of weave cordage threw the leaves and tie it the other square so the leave are stuck in the middle. Then you have a hinged door that u can push up and prop up with ur forked sticks and then swing it down at night. Think that might work?
built a debris shelter overweekend in about 1.5 hours, faced door to east and built small fire just outside, climbed inside at around 8pm and woke up at 11pm when fire died down, hadnt intended to be comfortable enough to sleep that long, these things definitely work if you follow daves info, dont know exact temp but water in plastic bottle just outside door was almost frozen solid
I am sure Dave does not need your "expert advice" on how to build or improve a shelter. This guy knows more about woods tramping than all of us combined. You just might learn something from him if you just listen instead of trying to "correct" him. No, he's not God but I'd rather be lost with this guy's help than with any of the clowns here giving him "advice". Giving Dave advice is just like a Catholic priest giving maritual advice...Keep it, Padre; you don't have a clue about the subject.
@GLOCKCOPG23 Not sure who's "expert advice" you were referring to but some things I learned about Dave, having watched and spoken to him and exchanged emails:he truly dislikes BS criticism from
'trolls' or guys that talk and don't "do".He has his own methods and preferences BUT welcomes different ideas and new methods. He is very savvy, but NEVER so smug as to say he knows it all. He is one of those guys that listens and if someone has a better idea he adopts it. I always admired that quality
@HondosPlace I was referring to a troll that was overly critical of Dave's methods. I really like Dave and really dislike trolls. I was defending him not ''dogging'' him like the butt head I was talking about. Thanks.

Dave, I love this series! You answered many of my questions about shelter. I got my wilderness survival merit badge where I had to make my own shelter and sleep in it but I was always concerned my skills weren't good enough. Thanks for your videos and passing your knowledge. Love Dual Survival!

It might n ot be a good Idea to use sandstone as a cover rock guys (I know that's not sandstone that dave is using but i just had to state that sandstone wouldn't be a good Idea {It cracks and slits when hot})
Yeah dave, i picked up a rock from a dry creek bed, the thing was as dry as could be, but it had rained a couple of weeks ago filling he creek. (But the creek would have dried up just a couple days later) It exploded. It scared the crap out of me, it sounded just like a gunshot
what ever happened with discovery? I have been away from this channel for a while.... I have not seen anything on discovery either... Hope it goes well. I like Daves personality, I think it would be great on tv.
Dave, this is a great tutorial video. What about spiders, scoropions, and other bothersome insects. The brown recluse spider could be a real danger, plus black widow spiders.
It seems to me that if you smoke the inside of the structure well before sleeping in it that the smoke should chase away any spiders. After you smoke it, then you could divert the smoke out a channel like you did with the heating stone and opening up a vent.
Superb spider shelter, I once camped in one that started as a tarp tent with a rope tied off on the ground and on a tree for support and built up with sticks and debris (just big enough to crawl into). It was so well insulated I had to get out of my sleeping bag. Keeping a fire going in your shelter is the only way to stay warm in the real cold stuff, without a teepee however its not going to be simple, your solution looks innovative.
Dave, I gotta say. You got me dreading the snows here in Upstate NY man. I can not wait to get my out into the bush to build this sucker once the melt is off.
it seems to work quite well. You only need to gather rolls of (birch) bark, dig up a shallow groove plce the rolls like a crude tube that goes under the shelters wall, and leads air into fire, just dont put it too near the fire or it will burn eventually.oh well you propably have tried system like this already i think.
I was checking out 8:16 the extension's roof supports. Minor suggestions: Take 3 or 4 more smaller diameter very flexible sticks and interlace them parallel to the front, meaning put the ends UNDER the outer poles (the ones perpendicular to the front), and OVER the three inner poles. It will keep the sticks fron sliding around as you add debris and increases the structures overall rigidity.Like in a wattle and daub wall. OR tie off several ends or intersections of the poles with natural fibers.
Dave, I have really liked the way this shelter has come together. Way to go! The rock covering to the fire was better than my idea of lining the pit with rocks. How about putting a leen to on one side of your overhang so you can store up some dry wood for those rainy days.
Maybe you might want to do a video on using the wrong rocks, and what happens to the rock when it heats up. Great video. I hope you mention my name if you do a video on using the wrong rocks around a fire.
Hey Dave you might want to tell people to be careful on want kind of rock you should use. We both know that if you use chert or flint, it will explode on you.
nice ass shelter dave. i wonder you could collect enough rain if you made a "gutter" system after raising one side of that addition in the front and using birch bark to catch the run off....
Dave, I love the look of your new shelter; I've never seen it before. Looks like that is what I'm doing this weekend. I wanted to give you a tip on pounding things into the ground. Instead of holding the object with a fist like most of us do. Many backhand/thumb hurting times. Try holding the object with your palm face up and supporting it with your fingers. If you do hit yourself; your hand has a cushion and also deflects with the beat stick. Hope you like it. Good Luck! Gonna miss you!
Superb - sheer luxury. It makes me want to become a tramp and live in one. Being a tramp I believe is a very underrated way of life. I might try it one day for a while. I would take my iPod and listen to Aqualung by Jethro tull.
that is actually SUCH a sweet shelter. Thank you so much Dave, your videos inspire me time and time again, to go out, camping, and just have fun and enjoy the environment, and our world. Thank you! :D
The first time I made a debris hut it did go up in a 12 ft. sheet of flames, my fault I was tired and built the fire too high. heart breaking to see all that work destroyed. Since then I've made the fire outside and heated up rocks and brought um in with me but that forces me to keep going outside. Dave that fire set up you made is genius I can't wait to give it a try next time! The awning as well. I had never thought to make one with a smaller hut. Awesome set of videos!
I'm going bush camping next weekend and I'm going to encourage everyone to try their hand a the debris shelter. Thanks for the great videos as usual, and the inspiration Dave. Patiently waiting for my new Pathfinder knife... :)
Great! Dave, may be you should back up the new entrance with 2 more poles, because if you push one of the two ones holding it now while entering or going out the roof will fall on your head.
Hey just wanted to say. I love the opening credits. THat pathfinder logo, with the paw prints, looks really nice man. Very professional. Titties Dave. Thanks for the vid, it was very informative, learned a lot.
if you dig a trench from the direction of the prevailing wind to the fire pit, then away from and out under the shelter, then lay rocks over the trench you form a "pipe" - for incoming air and an exhaust.
Dave, love you videos, thanks for the quick reply on my message last night...
One tip for those how intend to make such a shelter and use rocks as you have Dave is do not use rocks from creeks, when heated they might crack and when they do they can shoot fragments and they can make you blind.
I love this type of shelter, make loads of them when I was a kid and we lived close to the woods. But this is something I will teach my daugther to make.
When I wrote my previous note I was 4 minutes into the vid and paused it, wrote my comment about the creek rocks exploding and the hit play again and there he was mentioning it for safety tip.. ;)
Dave, always thinking about everything and taking care of his viewers
I think digging down may not be a good idea. If there is a bad rain and water does get in there, you may wake up in a foot deep puddle. Just my 2 cents, no offense meant.
i heard about rocks exploding around campfires. any danger in that with rocks around a fire in your shelter?

Keeping a fire going in your shelter is the only way to stay warm in the real cold stuff, without a teepee however its not going to be simple, your solution looks innovative.

Dave, I gotta say. You got me dreading the snows here in Upstate NY man. I can not wait to get my out into the bush to build this sucker once the melt is off.

Hey again Dave.
have u tried to make air channel for fire?
it seems to work quite well. You only need to gather rolls of (birch) bark, dig up a shallow groove plce the rolls like a crude tube that goes under the shelters wall, and leads air into fire, just dont put it too near the fire or it will burn eventually.oh well you propably have tried system like this already i think.

Will you still be able to sell other stuff on your site? Or does Discovery prevent that also?

I was checking out 8:16 the extension's roof supports. Minor suggestions: Take 3 or 4 more smaller diameter very flexible sticks and interlace them parallel to the front, meaning put the ends UNDER the outer poles (the ones perpendicular to the front), and OVER the three inner poles. It will keep the sticks fron sliding around as you add debris and increases the structures overall rigidity.Like in a wattle and daub wall. OR tie off several ends or intersections of the poles with natural fibers.

One of the best shelters I've seen. I love it. Will you sleep in it? I'd be interested in hearing about your experience sleeping in it.

Dave, I have really liked the way this shelter has come together. Way to go! The rock covering to the fire was better than my idea of lining the pit with rocks. How about putting a leen to on one side of your overhang so you can store up some dry wood for those rainy days.

Realy great serie Dave!! Gonna try that kind of a shelter this winter I think!! Great Work!! 5/5 to all 4 vids!!

Maybe you might want to do a video on using the wrong rocks, and what happens to the rock when it heats up. Great video. I hope you mention my name if you do a video on using the wrong rocks around a fire.
geraldlee33 2 years ago
will I watched the rest of your video and see that you said something about exploding rocks.
geraldlee33 2 years ago
Hey Dave you might want to tell people to be careful on want kind of rock you should use. We both know that if you use chert or flint, it will explode on you.

nice ass shelter dave. i wonder you could collect enough rain if you made a "gutter" system after raising one side of that addition in the front and using birch bark to catch the run off....

Couldn't that flat rock you have laid over your fire be used as a gridle to make pancakes once it gets heated up?

All you need now is a rocking chair and a welcome mat and your all set.

I hope to start building one this weekend.
Thanks for the great ideas.

Great! Dave, may be you should back up the new entrance with 2 more poles, because if you push one of the two ones holding it now while entering or going out the roof will fall on your head.

didn you ever think of making a broom to sweap the debris onto your blanket instead of crouching down and doing it by hand?
there might be crawlers in the debris on the ground so i use my feet or a broom to get those leaves, never my hands.

if you dig a trench from the direction of the prevailing wind to the fire pit, then away from and out under the shelter, then lay rocks over the trench you form a "pipe" - for incoming air and an exhaust.

surgicalshot 2 years ago
Dave, love you videos, thanks for the quick reply on my message last night...
One tip for those how intend to make such a shelter and use rocks as you have Dave is do not use rocks from creeks, when heated they might crack and when they do they can shoot fragments and they can make you blind.
I love this type of shelter, make loads of them when I was a kid and we lived close to the woods. But this is something I will teach my daugther to make.
19leon73 2 years ago
When I wrote my previous note I was 4 minutes into the vid and paused it, wrote my comment about the creek rocks exploding and the hit play again and there he was mentioning it for safety tip.. ;)
Dave, always thinking about everything and taking care of his viewers

echo1648 2 years ago
I like the overhang. It was defiantly a nice touch.
YouMockMe 2 years ago
you could dig down about a foot deep in there to give you some more head room.
OneWithGuns93 2 years ago
I think digging down may not be a good idea. If there is a bad rain and water does get in there, you may wake up in a foot deep puddle. Just my 2 cents, no offense meant.
oregonmikes 2 years ago
I had the same idea of digging down, but that really is a good point about the rain.

It would be sweet to make that over hang move up and down to also function like a door if you need or wanted one.

Oops pressed the wrong thumb lol.. He could make another grass mat and have it swing down beneath the over hang.
