Gareth Gates was already opera trained before he went on pop idol, but obviously on pop idol he would never have come 2nd if he sung so beautifully like this because they wanted pop singers, not people who could actually sing so perfectly, seeing as the music industry now is less about the voice and more about the clothing style and what they look like :/

I saw him live at the Barbican Theatre in the 25th Anniversary Touring Production and he blew me away. The best Marius I've seen for a quite some time. :)
