Ok, I exagerated quite a bit. The video has desaturated colors (maybe because of its poor quality) and everything is quite old-fashioned (I'm not talking about the music that I really like), that it could have been shot decades ago (I chose 1971 randomly).
It's just that it surprised me when I read it was shot in 2011. Nothing else. ;)
The music is great, the orchestra is top class; the Vienna Philharmonic. They do it every new year. But somehow it does look a little old. And when you see the couple at about 1.12 you would wonder if communism still reigned in eastern Europe and you would wonder if the orchestra was free.
Does anyone know who they are? Are they important people? I wonder, only because they were the only people to be shown in any detail, in the whole 7 minutes.
The conductor here, Franz Welser-Möst, was adopted by some minor royal figure in Lichtenstein; soon Welser-Möst was FUCKING HIS WIFE, that is, his adoptive mom!
And, to top it all off, HE WOUND UP MARRYING HER!!
@suann7707 I agree, but it's a Vienna tradition, super-stupid and super-fascist. I always have a feeling that audience is applauding for itself. KITSCH!
Carlos Kleiber is the Vienna Philharmonic's irreplaceable maestro. His huge fortune, inherited from his American mother, the B.F. Goodrich heiress, gave him and his father the freedom to only do work that truly interested them
I like the Arabs in this; they don't know shit about classical music and this is probably the first time they've had to sit through a performance; they don't seem to be enjoying it.
They also have shitty complexions; they must eat the most decadent shit imaginable.
At the end, the European guy is explaining to the Arab dude the significance of the conductor's motions; what an idiot. All that money and he can't learn shit about a fraction of some European culture.
@tudosiealex It's not me that is narrow-minded; it's the Arab prince and his wife that seem to be narrow-minded about a facet of high-brow Western Culture.
Indeed, 440,000,000 Arabs and no world-class symphony orchestra yet Israel, with 7 million people DOES have a world-class symphony orchestra but you would, of course, obviously call such an observation of mine narrow-minded.
@SatchmoSings Of course not, the reason I'm calling you narrow-minded is your continued belief that somehow, simply because a person is Arab, they cannot enjoy Classical Music.
@tudosiealex 440,000,000 Arabs in 22 countries are obviously the people who are narrow-minded; places like non-Muslim Asia, of course, DO have a tradition of appreciation and admiration and even excellent PERFORMANCE of this Western idiom.
Here is something from little TAIWAN of all places:
watch?v=WCFcJq5Rrs8
Get back to me when you can show me something similar involving Arabs.
@SatchmoSings So you did not hear before about Omar Khairat the Egyptian pianist or Opera Aida.....That's because you lack alot of information....people like you who are affected by the media are the really narrow minded........We had a tradition and our own music....but ignorant people were always against us
@MrJoseph1966 I will have to reserve judgement on Omar Khairat and he's better known as a composer rather than as a pianist.
All the rest of your remarks merely prove my point much in the same way that even the oil-rich Arab world still has no world-class medical centers, universities nor cultural centers.
In my own country, all the music schools are filled with East Asians . . .. and virtually no Muslims; you're the one that is ignorant.
@tudosiealex You are basically correct; it's not that I'm the narrow-minded one that has the belief that Arabs cannot enjoy classical music, it is you who is narrow-minded because of your rejection of the idea that Arabs ACTIVELY REJECT Western, Classical music and they reject it out of bigotry.
@mappingtheshit There is never a "wrong place" to announce my Jewness and prior to 1938 and "Anschluss" I'm sure there were quite a few Jews in the Vienna Philharmonic just as there had been many Jews in the Berlin Philharmonic, too.
Indeed, using your own criteria, this is not only a wrong place to announce your own Germanness but also the Jew-hatred that you associate with it by necessity.
@gucluatinc I happen to be very pro-Turkish, genius and I sorely resent Erdogan's pro-Islamist stance for his own Republic becuase this is having dire consequences for Turkey; Turkey is now diplomatically isolated, even as a member of NATO.
Syria might have 20 SCUD missile launchers aimed at Turkey and Syria is being backed by Iran and even Russia and the French have made clear that NATO will not come to Turkey's aid if Turkey is attacked; this is shameful.
The conductor, Franz Welser-Möst, was adopted by Baron Andreas von Bennigsen of Liechtenstein and Wesler-Möst not only started in fucking the Baron's wife, HE WOUND UP MARRYING HER!!!
@a1b2c3d4e5f699 it truly is, isn't it??? BTW, I'm totally in love with classical music, which is ur fave piece of music? mine's "Für Elise" by L. v. Beethoven
too many to name, but immediately I can think of Bizet's Torreador song, Bethoven's "Ode to Joy", Verdi's "Chorus of Hebrew Slaves". Just noticed that your choice is beautiful soothing piano, whereas my choice may be more on the choral side. But I love all classical music and look forward to many more suggestions here.
Beautifull. Brings to the fore dreams of Imperial Autria-Hungary and movies of "SISSI" and the Royal Viennese Court....one of the marches I love the most. Classy, gracefull not overly militaristic....
@KingsHeadOfficial It's probably the very first time he had to sit through it; Arabs generally reject or at least refuse to consider any non-Arab and/or Muslim culture.
I always think that most people who patronise/view this concert do so for the sake of just two tunes (if you can't guess what the other one is, never mind).
Without any doubt, a marvelous interpretation and performance too. Please note: 2012 will be the second appearance for Mariss Jansons as conductor of the Vienna New Year's Concert.
I've wached this concert on tv and i have to say it was very boring comparing to the previous years. Radetzky March was so much better last year and also Blue Danube was much better last year.
@nbtk7m3 yeah mine too...if there's a reason why i'm gonna work hard and earn a lot of money it's to meet the dress code for this concert (and getting my ass there too since i'm don't live anywhere near austria). The audience here look so expensive man, it's depressing. but the music is heaven.
