  • Now i wanna live on a boat!!! i love this video... i was thinking of building a rest house near the shore but upon seeing this video i changed my mind.. i'll make a boat instead.. :)

  • Went on a longboat hols when I was young and loved it. Would love to live on a longboat now. Wonder how much a half decent one would cost? and do you have to pay to move around like tolls or paying for locks or can you roam the country for free.???

  • I know exactly what you mean! I actually had three geese that were my 'bodyguards'. Fantastic as every time anyone came near my boat at night, they would chase them away. S x

  • The wildlife are hilarious once they get to know you. I have Ducks and Geese that come over every day to get food.

  • good on u i only wish i had the funding to do this one day though nice vid

  • @rightfredsdead Not many gulls on canals and I'm not really sure how you'd get the rocking motion of a boat in a flat but I'm sure you have some ideas ;) S x

  • @rightfredsdead Absolutely right. A friend of mine bought her boat without even trying one night on one and she's very happy but I would suggest that anyone thinking of this does a LOT of research preferably including hiring a boat to see if it suits them. Oh, and there are some days where it goes fantastically well and some days when you curse the day you ever thought of it. Fortunately the latter are very few! S x

  • Hi, it costs a fortune to hire a boat, depending on where you are in the country and the length of the boat but basically you're looking at hundreds of pounds per week, much, much more expensive than buying your own. Just google to get phone numbers etc.

Perhaps you could look into a timeshare buy or a boat mortgage? Beware boats that are sold cheaper than they should be and ALWAYS get a survey with the boat out of the water, always!

    Best of luck,

    Sx

  • id love to live on a boat as well. are there any possibilites to hire boats for a longer period of time? lets say 2-3 years, or even longer?

I havent got the money to buy one... if anyones got some information about hiring boats please answer or write me a message. would help me a lot!!

  • @ShootThru Yes it would seem that I have mis-characterized your life of living on the water...The key to my concern was seeing the stillness of the water in your vid...With that quiet a water, my concern of misquitos?? is very high..Also the opposite would be true..too close to a river so you get the full effect of swells & wave action. Is mold or mildew ....high humidity, a problem aboard a live-a-board???

  • @RichardEllisxyz

Hi again, the stillness of the water is due to the fact that the films were shot on canals. As it happens, there is also a river running quite close to the canal. There are midges at dusk but that's what spiders are for! Only seen a few mosquitos and they didnt last long. No swells or waves apart from the occasional idiotic hire boater as the speed limit is to ensure your wake doesn't break. Mould etc is easily prevented by ensuring good airing of your bedding etc. Sx

  • @salemcripple two Words - ICE WHARF! People who are on liveaboards there in central London go for a very pretty penny indeed!

  • @ogicabp4u exactly!

  • @salemcripple As it happens, I lived in the Portland/Metro area for almost fifty years before moving down here, so I know all that you talk about. I was "researching" living on the water, as I always wanted to live on a houseboat or a 'Liveaboard' boat...when I came across this vid. There is obviously a sliding scale here, but when I read of landowners not being receptive, or talk of feces in the river, or "stolen land" of landowners....this instance is toward the bottom of that scale.

  • @RichardEllisxyz

I think we have crossed wires here. My videos are to do with the inland waterways of the UK. I left the comments on about dumping rubbish etc including my comments asking those very, very few that do it on this site so that people would realise it is a very bad thing to do. I can honestly say that in all my years of boating I met one farmer who initially wasn't keen but when I explained how I would leave his land better than I found it, he was fine, just needed reassurance.

  • @RichardEllisxyz

Perhaps it might be an idea to delete the comments by idiotic kids saying its ok to dump rubbish anywhere as I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea? Be grateful for your thoughts. S x

  • @RichardEllisxyz

At no point did I say this lifestyle is glamourous. It is rewarding in it's own way. Due to house prices being out of reach for most people, many are now selling up and living aboard permanently. I have to disagree with your other comments however. It is Bohemian, elegant, challenging and fun. We certainly are NOT the dregs of society.

  • What about internet on a boat? TV Reception? Solar panels any good? Cost? Whats the smallest size boat you can get away with for 1 person? Can you moor indefinitely? What about in docklands?

  • @ogicabp4u

All these things are possible although I would suggest a wind turbine rather than solar power in this country. You'd have to do your own research on cost as it depends what power you'll need, sorry! I've lived on a 30' boat but know others that live on smaller or bigger boats. With regards to moorings, please contact British Waterways for a full explanation of their latest scheme (it isn't popular at all!). Thanks for your comments. Sx

  • @ShootThru You can get internet through an old mobile phone with a serial cable on a GSM Network with a laptop. You will only get 9.6kbps though - only good for MSN and text based Email. (Although you could have v slow internet!) GPRS is another solution but have to pay per Mb. The best service is something like HSDPA (eg Vodaphone) with ISP WiFi hotspots (as backup) included on a tariff. Digital TV reception will be much better than the traditional analouge when available. THX. :)

  • Thanks for sharing

    beautiful scenary :)

so you have what to look at even if the boat itself is narrow...

    regards from Israel :)

    (narrow country..)

  • @JusticeVSpropaganda

Thankyou for your very kind comments. It would be a pleasure to take you out on a boat if you ever visit this country. Sx

  • @JusticeVSpropaganda

Everything inside and outside! It's fabulous not having a television. Thank you for your comments. S x

  • i would love to build these

  • Love it..peaceful, relaxing, soothing.. awesome !! Wow wouldnt that be nice.. Would love to know more about the lifestyle of living on a boat.. only thing that would possibly worry me is that I have a dog and she would have no where to run outside to play etc..Here in Australia I havnt seen anything like this..yeah we boat cruises etc but not like this.. Still think it would be a lovely lifestyle..

    Cheers Caz

  • @rightfredsdead Please make sure you leave your rubbish and porta potti at the many sites along the canals. Don't want farmers stopping us from mooring when we want or need to. S x

  • This is 100 times better than living in a bus or van.

  • Find new group "Live on a Boat" on Facebook!

  • I love this video, I think that most of us would like to live

this life stye................ I know I will in the in the short disdant future... Definately

  • @cardinal2008uiffingi Thank you, hope you enjoy the other short films too. S x

  • Enjoyed ther clip, thanks for sharing

  • Thats Sowerby Bridge.. I recognise the toer in the background (Halifax) theres an old cafe there that does the best bacon butties!...( god i sound really old....lol)

  • @kernowrock555 You're not old, you're spot on! FAB bacon butties!!! S x

  • Please could someone tell me where the dry dock shown at 18 seconds is? Also , how much does it cost to hire it? We are seriously considering moving onto the canals to live and are unsure about maintenance costs. Love the clip. Cheers.

  • @blueshed2

The dry dock in Hebden Bridge was £120 a week several years ago. Sorry I don't know how much it is now.

  • I would love to love on a narrow boat but have not got the courage - I take my hat off to you!

  • Costs depend on the length of the boat and where she is moored. Currently it costs the same per length as a narrowboat to a Dutch barge but there have been rumours that BW will start charging for width as well.

The best advice I can give is to see what sort of boat you would want and then contact BW to ask how much the licences would cost. You now need to pay not only the cruising licence but also a mooring licence to BW as well as whatever mooring costs your moorings manager may want. Sx

  • Is it true that you have to live off fish if you live on a boat?

  • Only if you are a heron. Sx

  • Hey ! we saw this on TV somewhere, huh.

We're about to live aboard, can't wait! 2 weeks and counting

  • If you did see it on TV, please let us know which channel as we didn't know about it! Happy boating! Sx

  • Wow! so many haters on this vid! If you don't want to live on the water, then why the hell are you watching youtube videos about it?

  • @salemcripple It's the internet...that's just the way it is...some nutters look around on the net for things to hate. It's their pastime...e.g. trolls. It it just a fact of net life. Same as needing locks on your doors in real life.

  • @ogicabp4u yea I know. I just wish people like that would realize how sad and pathetic they really are, which would cause them to grow the fuck up, or get a real life.

  • I just bought a 30ft Newport sailboat, me and my girlfriend are moving to it in a couple months. We are excited, it's a bit cramped but we don't plan on being home much, we like being active so it will be good.

Best part is, Catalina Island is 22 miles away :)

  • You should make a video and put it on youtube. I know myself (as well as probably scores of others) are extremely interested in what it's like, how much it costs, how fun it is.

    Anyway just a thought :-)

    Darwin be with you

  • Please please post a video, I agree with razorflown2, we are very interested and just a tad envious :-) Sx

  • Yep.

I was sold before watching. But now I got a fire under my ass!

    Thanks!

And I love the old girl with the peace sign. Marry me BABY!

  • Thank you but the girl with the peace sign is taken, sorry hun! S x

  • As long as she's happy, I'm happy...

    Excellent, Hun....LOL!

  • Very intersesting video. Really gives you an insight into loving aboard.

    Thanks for sharing

  • Thank you very much for your kind comments. Very much appreciated. Sx

  • Well done. These vid's are quite impressive.

I looked at living on the Leeds Liverpool a few years ago but gave up as I couldn't afford a narrow boat.

I'm currently living on a 21ft sailing boat. Even now as it's minus 1 outside, and it's still day time! :|

More vid's if you please. I enjoyed that short, sort of voyeuristic look into a life I never quite made happen.

  • Wow, first boat was a river cruiser or 'Tupperware job' as everyone else called her. No heating, no insulation. I take my hat off to you.

Thank you for the kind comments. As soon as more videos are ready, they will be posted.

I hope you get your narrow boat soon esp if it has a squirrel stove on it! Sx

  • Really interesting Vid, Thank you for posting

    :-)

  • why do they sound like they have a stick of their ass? geesh,,,,should be a good thing, yet thing, yet they make it sound so anal.

  • They are Europeans hence the word peons

  • They aren't professional presenters or actors, they are real boaters. It is a good thing to be on a boat, I don't think they sound like they have a stick anywhere! Sx

  • I fancied living on a boat but I've heard there are giant turtles living in the canals that can swallow a man, whole.

  • this is not true, i assure you

  • Yes it's completely untrue....they're giant water spiders. My Uncle was eaten alive by one.

  • i assure you, this is not true

  • Oh you're poor uncle, well my half cousin Barbara got taken by the monster of legend, the Eel Shark of Boca Rotan..I swear I shall find it...

  • Ah, the Oo-la's. They are huge indeed. Sx

  • @emeraldxm Was it one of those Huge Ninja spiders that those funky ninjas ride on the back of across the water and can also fly? (Yes, there *IS* a movie featuring them!!) Sorry to hear about your Uncle.

  • Looks like the calder valley to me, home sweet home. Would love to live on a boat there.

  • hahah great video but @ 01:55 "the sound of water freezing" I think somebody forgot to take his crazy pills!!

  • :-) Sounds funny but it is true. The ice makes a really weird sound as it's freezing. The best one is to skim stones across ice and you get a very strange whickering type noise. Cheers for watching the vid and glad you enjoyed it! Sx

  • Hi, thanks very much. The dvd was made by myself and there are five films in total. Glad you enjoyed them.

    Thanks,

    Susan

  • very good videos what dvd are these off, have yo got any more clips
