I love this version of The Swan but it makes me sad when people criticise other dancers because their Swan is less graceful or seems sadder etc. There's lots of different swans in the world and I'm sure they all die in different ways, some peacefully because of their age, some in pain, some because they have lost their mate. Let each Swan be herself and just enjoy her for her own variation of the story. :D
Her arms are perfect!! I would melt in her arms just to see her dancing like that!! I would yelled at her "Please swan! Please dont die you are beautiful".......Her dance is simply delightful!! Poetry in motion!
Ok - the arms here represent the swan's wing and must ripple, ripple, ripple thru' to the fingetrips, which are spread as they are to represent the very edges of the wing. Watch a real swan and you will see how perfect Makarova is in this and her Swan Lake. Then, to depress yourself utterly or have a good chuckle, go and look at NP's 'ballet flaps' in BS (rightly abbreviated, methinks)!
Arms folded, on tiptoe, she dreamily and slowly circles the stage. By even, gliding motions of the hands, returning to the background from whence she emerged, she seems to strive toward the horizon, as though a moment more and she will fly, exploring the confines of space with her soul... by one swift forward-gliding morion of the right foot to earth, she sinks on the left knee, the aerial creature struggling against earthly bonds; and there, transfixed by pain, she dies.
She has the face of a godess statue, impossibly slender body...
With her shapely face, big expressive eyes, large cheekbones and perfect svelte, yet rubber-like flexible body and long, willowy limbs, Makarova has emerged as one of the greatest ever to put on a pair of tights and toe shoes...
I believe she put on earth for the sole purpose of ballet...
Truly mesmerising performance but the credit for the music rightfully must go to Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns who wrote the music from The Swan "The Carnival of the Animals".
I've never seen her before... such amazing concentration and commitment, all the while appearing effortless. Her arms were so beautifully expressive. Wow.
As 'Schoevia' listed this as 'Education'I make the following comments: Choreography:Michel Fokine
Composer:Saint-Saëns (pronounced San Son)
Originally performed by:Anna Pavlova
For me, Makova;s was the purest performance I have ever witnessed & is unsurpassed. Another personal link is that my own Sister played this professionally on the Cello (first desk soloist) with the Symphony Orchestra and I remember her being terrified of it each and every night.
Her arms are her BEST thing in this vid! They are absolutly beautiful - graceful, elegant and she totally dipict's the essence of a dying swan!!
I have been dancing ballet since i was three and am progressing into professional dance/ballet training next year so i certainly know alot about ballet. And i certainly understand about it and the effort and difficulty of performing like she has.
so please don't tell me that her arms are not beautiful because your comment is totally laughable!!!!!!!!
I think both of you people are arguing over something that can be resolved easily. The arms aren't suppose to be beautiful in this dance or elegant, but they are exactly what they suppose to be. Its not a piece from the Swan Lake, it has totally different concept. They meant to twist and come out of position and flop and shake in agony. Even the twist of the left hand at the very end is perfect, although not perfect from ballet form point of view.
how do you know she has very gentle arms and i bet you cant do that so who do you call a smart ass ? its you who is a smart ass who think they know about ballet .
@yuliya1995: So true, she really has amazingly gentle arms, and such a beautiful neck! The way she carries herself is just above and beyond. Even her simplest gestures are extremely elegant. For me, she's really a complete artist. I am rather surprised that 3 people have clicked the "don't like" button. What's not to like?

@arakhachatran Well i know you wrote this 3 years ago, But you obviously know nothing about ballet yourself. She is performing the 'dying swan' variation, she is a swan! Idiot, her arms are so beautiful and how is she the one selected to do the piece if she has bad arms? Sorry to say but this one is not about arm placement.
