  • good effort with the blend!!!!!!!!!

  • wE need more of this kind of music.. musical evolution so far SUCKS!!!

  • Johnny Mathis is Jason Gideon in Criminal Minds!!! :D

  • @virgiwonka91 Uhhh, no ... that would be Mandy Patinkin, who's pictured here with Barbra. Johnny Mathis is the male singer in this recording.

  • Mandy was so hot. Damn

  • ooh Johnny, you bake apples too?

  • and YES Mandy P should have sung!

  • when YENTL Came out I got a bunch of my friends to drop ACID and join me at the CINERAMA DOME on Hollywood & Vine to trip on Barbra 3 strories high and half way around ythe auditorium...THEY FREAKED OUT !! It was too much for them. essp PAPA CAN YOU HEAR ME. which is mostly extreeme close-ups and on that giant screen, her nose was the size of a buick! FRIGHTENING! (I loved it ) but, to this day those friends still call me MENTYL!!

  • she should have called Barry Gibb

  • I will never understand why Mandy did not get to sing in this movie ..or, at least this song. I have always felt that he had the ability to upstage Barbra and I am a huge Barbra fan. But, to support the movie and the chemistry between them, she should have put her ego aside and let him sing.

  • Beautiful voices, but I don't think this is a duet.... it's a really bad mixing job by an audio editor. You can tell the orchestras are different. Too bad.

  • @ poapzz1: I thank you for your comments. I am appalled at the fact that so many ot our truly great artists only get their due posthumously!! The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, (should be shame), is a joke!!

  • @ poapzz1: As I follow music, I see so many artistic injustices!! I am appalled!!

  • @lired70 ,

I'm not too sure with whom you're apalled,me or the performance!

  • It's called puberty Barbra and Jonny!!!! Thats what that feeling is!!!

  • I find her look incredibly sexy in this film. She's beautiful.

  • Mandy Patinkin, (if he was allowed to sing in Yentl), would have crushed Johnny Mathis in this or any other song!! I don't think that there is another male voice in this world who is a match for Mandy's range or energy!!

  • @lired70 ,

You are so right! Patinkin would've excelled had he been allowed to perform this number.Spot-on!

  • Mathis's voice soars toward heaven like a homesick angel!

  • The song is called The Way HE Makes Me Feel. Simply changing the "he's to she's" and the "hims to hers" is simply stupid and doesn't fit with the meaning of the song. Besides, isn't Mathis 'out' yet?

  • @mikesterSTLMO ,

Hahahahahaha,"isn't Mathis 'out' yet?" Like it! Apart fro the fact he just is so wrong for this,he doesn't exactly make me feel all warm & gooey inside with his voice, think his rendition with Babs of that splendid duet from West Side Story,One Hand,One Heart! That was a travesty.

  • @popazz1 Yeah I'm with ya on that one too. It has its moments, but they sounded like they were out screeching each other, but then again, I don't like the song (or the play).

  • @mikesterSTLMO ,

Well,I don't think Streisand ever 'screeches',lol. But I do think sometimes she simply picks the wrong artist to duet with. That coupled with the fact she's aware how powerful her voice can be may well lead her to over/under compensate.Personally I think Mathis has a 'style' which doesn't often lend itself well to duet-ing.

  • Mandy was so absolutely beautiful at this time. He was just stunning.

  • Barbra, GOD gave u so much talent my darling.....I know for sure that you already belong

to HIS choir in Heaven, now fight your life to gain that crown....one a few more steps living the rest of you with HIM

  • Nice duo. As I undersand it, Streisand's favorite singer is "Johnny Mathias." So I am sure this collaboration was something she enjoyed performing. The two have very unique voices. :)

  • johnny mathis was like a greek god Adonis

  • This is more than the average person can take...Barbra and Johnny.............two of the most dynamic, beautiful, captivatingly wonderful voices in the whole world....togeather!!!! Too atomic for the brain........makes the emotions go crazy.

  • It's complicated to explain, she loved a boy who thought she was a boy like him, but she was a girl that wore a boy. .. then..

  • AWESOME compilations!!!

  • oh,I just know I shouldn't be pointing this out given the nature of the film, but I'm gonna say it anyway. You can all call me a perv',lol, but Mandy Patinkin was absolutely sexy as all hell! The scene where he and his mates all skinny-dipping was just soooo homoerotic!Yentl, one of my favourite Streisand films, and NO,not just cos of that scene!

  • I would have to agree that I always found the film extremely homoerotic. He was like: "Oh you're a chick! So I don't have to feel gay anymore!!! Yay!" Until her sexuality was revealed, that attraction was very homosexual.

  • Your comment has opened all sorts of conceptual windows for me, ChaoticBlossom. Now, I'm going to replay various puzzling moments and behaviors involving my Shtetl-descended friends and associates (whose misogynistic comments have long baffled and irritated me). Thanks for being the catalyst.

  • I remember seeing a man out and about years ago and one night he appeared clean shaven. My reaction to him was that he looked NUDE. He didnt get my meaning at all.

  • The Statue of Liberty is nowhere in any frame of Yentl.

  • Barbra is sooooo Smooth! and Mandy is sooooooo Totally hott!!

  • This'll be a spoiler of the movie, if I watch too much, but Patinkin was seriously hot. Amazing how without the long hair and beard he didn't look like anything at all. Makes you wonder how many trolls could be attractive if they weren't over-groomed.

  • @megaswenson Totally agree!! The somewhat dishevelled look is great!!

  • Glad you agree. And the beard is such a powerful male gender signal, it helps with basically scrawny guys like Patinkin (and makes the jawline look bigger...seriously important for guys). And I suspect that, beyond sheltering the face from unflattering light angles, long hair idealizes posture...so even if the neck juts forward (I think it's an inherited trait...not just the result of 'bookishness'), the head appears to sit directly above the shoulders.

  • Mathis Rules! OMG!

Merci.

  • Thank you for posting. I'm 43 and yet to see YENTL, but your video gives it a background and passion that has made me feel that somehow I've been missing something all these years. I shall offer you a video response with a rare surprise scene with Mandy Patinkin.

  • Trust me, you havn't missed a thing. Skip the movie and enjoy the soundtrack.

  • If you haven't seen Yentl, Stay On Track...SEE the movie! I have the VHS and I watched it in my own little marathon for about 3 days in a row back in the late 90's. The music and her acting-the-songs can be addictive to watch. :-) Barbra is a brilliant interpreter of songs!

  • You should see Yentl, if you haven't already. It's great!

  • Just got my 25th Anniversary Yentl DVD. The remastering is so great and the extra features show and explain so many things I've never noticed before in this wonderful movie. Barbra Streisand is the most amazing and talented human being to ever walk the Earth.

  • It's too bad Johnny felt that he had to change the pronoun.

  • Ya know she wanted to say HIM, LOL. All kidding aside LOVE Barbra, like Johnny. Have you ever heard Jennifer Holiday sing this. It was here on Y/T, but not anymore. It was BRILLIANT! And to me Streisand has the best voice I have EVER heard!! J Hol just made it her own, before seeing/hearing it I would have said ''No one should attempt to sing this it belongs to Barbra Streisand. IMO it still does, but I enjoyed what J. H. added to it.

  • Hey Marklulrich:

Jennifer Holliday's version of The Way He Makes Me Feel, from Yentl, is back on YouTube. You have to type it in the search section to make it come up though. Enjoy!

  • I have heard J.Holiday's version. Interesting how interpretation makes such a difference. Jennifer Holiday's version is a sultry statement of love(nothing new, but intense), while Barbra's is a statement of romantic discovery... newness. I loved her acting through this song.

  • OMG, Jennifer Holiday SANGS the hell out of this song. It is unimaginable that anyone outsings Barbra on one of her songs, but Jennifer pulls it off.

  • Scary stuff this "Yentl" ! Babs make

    the Hulk look girlish.

  • Mandy Patinkin won for best Jewfro

  • you did a fabulous job...my fav female and male singers together again......SIMPLY FABULOUS...as for the movie, Mr. Patinkin's pitch would not have done it for me...I only enjoyed him in "evita" on stage he was riveting!!!

  • Quite simply beautiful. Thank you sooooo much for posting this.

  • Personally I think this works really well, good work. I'm completely in love with Streisand and her voice does blend well with Mathis ("One Hand, One Heart/I Have A Love" anyone) but it's a shame there's such discontinuity here. Good video though

  • You may be right. I was surprised by how well

Mathis sang this song from Yentl, that I find that he sings more lyrics than Barbra in my video. Many critics have always mentioned that Mandy Patinkin should have sang in the

    movie. I'm not so sure.

  • I don't think it would have worked should any other character have sung besides Barbra. It was very much her movie and she'd wanted to make it since 1968. You can really see the love she put into the making of this movie, especially in the songs she sings.

I've heard some covers of the songs in Yentl but none are as good as Mathis in The Way She Makes Me Feel. But Barbra is incomparable.

  • @albertdiner

try Mandy Patikin's video entitled Somewhere Over the Rainbow on for size when deciding Mandy's partipation for singing. It's awesome!

  • love this song very much! its been much more better if it is barbra's version only

  • the best voice ever!!!!

no one has or will be as good.

    streisand la "real" diva.

and yes ...don't try and blend songs with her voice in it. It destroys the other performer.

  • I admit that when I did this I was beginning to blend voices. I wanted to see how it would

have sounded as a duet. Many have liked it in spite of all the errors.

Later I made a blend of barbra and Johnny singing THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE as a duet.

It has been liked in all the 5 continents.

It is the most popular version of that song

on Youtube, more popular than the Tony

Bennett version that´s a classic. So you see

a "duet" gives the song a new life. I hope Barbra and Johnny liked it.

  • Well, it's tricky because they're singing in different keys, too. Maybe if you changed the pitch on one of them...

  • I agree Jake this duet works great and I have always thought that Streisand and Mathis would be able to make some beautiful songs together. I would love to talk to you my email address is tennisman5419@aol.com

  • the audio on here really irritates my ears just when I want to get swept up in the music the jaring hiss keeps popping me back please reload or replace

  • Who is the girl that is singing with Johnny Mathis? Oh, it's someone called Streisand, I think.

  • Yes, the one and only Barbra Streisand.

    Their voices blend so well.

  • @albertdiner "Their voices blend so well."

Possibly but in your editing they are simply juxtaposed, not blended.

  • @albertdiner "Their voices blend so well."

  • must be barbara mandrell

  • Boy, Mandy Patinkin was a looker back then.

  • Yeah, I know, bribabytt. He was real HOT in Princess Bride, too. I still fantasize about him in that costume some 21 years later.

  • Mandy Patinkin...what a babe...who would not be in love with him?

  • You think? Kinda a bear

  • ive loved him since i was a kid.

  • bellissimo film..uno dei miei preferiti di Brabra

  • she would not have gone to Israel because it was part of the OTTOMAN EMPIRE at that time and they tended to restrict Jewish immigration besides Israel wasn't exactly the golden medina the way the US is. Looks like it might have been back in the later 1800s or early 1900s before WWI. I hope that the girl and the boy she left behind managed to get out like she did. She had to leave. Also, Yentl wore men's clothes which is frowned on by Orthodoxers. She had no choice, would have been a Bohemian.

  • PLEASE!!!! RELEASE YENTL ON DVD!!!

  • Yentl: the 25th Anniversary Edition will be released on February 3, 2009. I understand there will also be a director's cut version as well!

  • You have just made a very dull day very exciting indeed

  • simplement sublime

  • What was the part of this movie that touched you most?

  • I would have to say A PIECE OF SKY with Yentl and the immigrants on the ship, going to America the tragedy that european jews would be facing in a near future. If you notice in that scene on the ships deck, some people stand like statues, confused. No movement at all. Streisand is a great director.Almost a pre-holocaust image is conveyed. Also the audio in that last scene of Yentl is amazing. How she moves and then goes into a "tunnel" and the singing gets an "echo" effect.
  • Hmmm funny: I thought that the ship was headed for Israel - I wonder why I thought that. I had assumed her fresh start would be pioneering Israel. I'll have to check this out.

I love the song "No wonder she's pretty" and also the part song "Why settle for justa piece of sky".

    See you

Amanda (Emigrated alone to Israel when I was 19)

  • Probably could have been Israel ...but the State of Israel wasn't establish in the film's setting. It predates...

  • I was since told by somebody else that the Statue of Liberty is in the final shots of the movie, so that clears that question up.

    - Yes... true about the pre-dating

  • Congratulations! A lovely song!

  • I don't get why Avigdor fell in love with her when he thought she was a guy.. Barbra does not make a very attractive lad.

  • Avigdor sees him as a friend, not a lover - Avigdor is in love with Amy.

  • Avigdor is in love with Hadaas. The character of Hadaas was played by Amy Irving in the movie.

  • Oh yes!! That's right - I forgot her screen name. ;-)

    Love that movie.

  • I love this song and the movie. I could feel her pain of unfulfilled love and the scenes of Jewish life in Poland brought so many old memories.

  • i love their voices

  • I find this one of most beautiful and romantic pieces of music in films. Barbara is really great singer. I rememer I was shown the film some 16 years ago for the first time(after having lived in Soviet Union all my life and thinking there was nothing like that in Juish culture!Since then this Film is among my favourites. And Barbara Streisand -God bless her.

  • Would love to have her sing with Mandy on this video!!! Wish he had been singing in the movie!!!!!!

  • she has a clear voice and they have great chemistry...but wats sooooo funny is that she takes her shirt off to show him she's a woman

    and they look great together

  • Great! The full soundtrack LP is selling on Ebay now...

  • feinsteinfan..i totallly agree.

breaks my heart though i would watch him a million times in the movie if i could.

i get to see him live in concert at the kodak on 2/2 and i am so excited i can hardly stand it.

  • love this song , its so romatic everytime i hear it my heart melts .Its wonderfull Barbra and johhny what wonderfull voices ..

  • how beautiful barbra streisand sings this is a lovely sad sad love song,i love jonny too

  • I am so excited!!!! Thanks albertdiner for this info. I can't for the US release. I think the score is just heaven!

  • Holy God, is he sexxxxx-eeeeee!!!!!

  • I don't know if this is true, but I heard that the reason Barbra didn't let Mandy Patinkin sing was that she know he'd blow her out of the water and her ego couldn't take that.

  • i doubt that can be true-could any singer esp. a male out-do her? interesting gossip though!

  • This was Yentl's story, with songs about her thoughts, not Avigdor's thoughts.

  • I hate it when they're slow about releasing good movies on DVD!! I loved this movie and Mandy was soooo sexy to me!!!

  • underrated

  • the sad thing was she cast Mandy Patinkin as

her love interest and didn't have him sing in the movie. What a waste of a marvelous talent.

  • You're absolutely correct.I wonder why?

  • Way back when Yentl was released I wondered why Barbra was the ONLY singer(and I didn't know then how wonderful a singer Mandy Patikin is. But later I realized that since this was Yentl's story (her thoughts), the singing, was a soliloquy. Notice that there wasn't a scene without her being present. Likewise, in the Prince of Tides, there are no scenes without "Tom" the main character. Interesting directing, yes? :-)

  • Does anyone have Johnny singing "Love Me As Though There Were No Tomorrow" it's from his 1962 Rapture album. If you have it wold you post it please.

  • I want to buy that movie i saw when i was very young...you think the DVD is available ?

  • The DVD is only available in Europe and in

Israel. The American DVD `approved and color'

corrected by Director Barbra Streisand has

not been released by United Artists, who

owns the movie. The VHS version is available.

Barbra Streisand has also added deleted scenes

to be included in the U.S. DVD, as well as

    Director´s comments. Patience..

  • If you have noticed, Barbra's DVD titles have been coming out at 20, 25, 30 year anniversarys. Yentl will be 25 at Christmas 2008.

  • Let's hope. I thought it would be great if a

yiddish language option track was added. with

Barbra recording her 5 songs in yiddish.

Yiddish was the language spoken by Avigdor and

Yentl, and the original language used by

Isaac bashevis Singer to write the short story

"Yentl, the yeshiva boy" on which this movie

    is based.

  • that's a great observation, doesn't explain this guys bad use of johnny Mathis, they did a most EXCELLENT duet on ONE HAND/I HAVE L
