@arebelangel Yes, in this particular version they dance barefoot. Generally the men don't go en pointe like the women (though they sometimes do in certain ballet's). Here they don't need dance shoes.
amazing ending to a wonderful movie and the dads face says all he's feeling, knowing that Billy has made it out. He'll never have to work the mines like his father and brother.
God. When I was fourteen and watched this movie, I cried.
And boy did I ever cry at this scene.
It was a great ending, although most people would argue that maybe they should have shown more to the scene, but the look on the fathers face as Billy Jumps through the air... priceless. <3
Remarkable. Though not in this particular scene, I must say that Jamie Bell is one of the most talented actors I have ever had the pleasure to admire on screen. A tour de force like that at 13? My God.
I love this movie! Why? because it shows you that if you have a dream and you believe in yourself, it is attainable. I cry all the time at the end too. I've always wanted to be a dancer, but something held me back. Now, I hope to incorporate dancing some how some way into my adult life.
I just finished watching this movie and wanted to find out more about both Adam Cooper and Gary Lewis. This scene was incredibly beautiful and moving. I replayed it about 10 times before I turning it off. Lewis' emotions as he waited for his son to dance and Cooper's - subtle yet powerful - reaction to being told his family was in attendance were riveting. The entire cast was excellent. Love the movie!
One of the most fascinating aspects of this scene is that the man who plays Billy (age 25) is Adam Cooper who was actually starring in Michael Bourne's re-adaptation of Swan Lake featuring all male swans instead of female as in the original version. It is truly a beautiful re-imagining of a classic love tragedy. The costume Adam is wearing as well as all the young male dancers featured in the wings of the theatre are all from Michael Bourne's production. It is absolutely breathtaking.
Among the best movie endings ever. The scene, and music, stop at precisely the emotional high point - there's no resolution, no letdown, no relaxation of tension. Suddenly, it's over. And you're left hanging in the air - visually and emotionally.
I love the way this scene depicts how male ballet dancers are elite athletes instead of their stereotyped view of being scrawney puffs! This is awesome and gives me goosebumps every time I see it!!
I think this is a nice but sad ending , i would have hoped for it to go on a bit more , Maybe Billy Meeting up with his father and telling him he was so proud of him , i would have thought that to make a wonderful ending.
@ClareAer Did you not see the fathers face when he jumped onto stage? No words could quantify the pride he had for his son as displayed by the expression and emotion on his face.
I was captivated by this scene. The history of family and town in the movie, dramatizes the beautiful change in so many lives. What a thrill to see this developed body on Billy.
Well yay :D he jumped in the air ever so gracefully ^o^ showing off his talent *w* very touching scene especially seeing his fathers reaction. Takes skill to do those moves man ^^
Adam Cooper who plays the adult Billy as a dancer was the Swan in the male version of Swan Lake, so he's perfect for the part. Adam Cooper is an amazing and gifted dancer, and makes this little bit of film magical.
His father's reaction in the theatre is heartbreaking and fantastic acting. I think that his Dad was experiencing more than joy at his son's talent and his personal sacrifices for Billy. I think that he was fulfilling his dead wife's expectations of him as a father.
@melodymaxine I agree with every word you say, lovingly and supremely. But, the editing of this final scene is what tears the heartstrings. It is edited within an inch of its life. All the acting, music and costume would fail if this, penultimate scene, were not edited PERFECTLY !!!!! This American LOVES Billy Elliot. The Film and the Stage Play ( with Kyril Kulich ! )
This musical is amazing. Thinking that even though people in his family didn't want him to do ballet he still tried to show them how important ballet was to him. Such a great musical :)
Still one the best endings I have evr seen for a movie. Emotionally overpowering. Not just this scene but also the few minutes leading up to it. Billy's father in the big city (looking almost lost), coming into the theater, and the absolute pride you can see in his face that MY son has done it. All my hard work in the mines has been for this moment. And it always breaks me up when the father does that gasp, realizing how beautiful his sons work is.
this scene is kind of emotional culmination of all story we don't know nothing about adult Billie's life, but we watch a wonderful performer and tears in his father eyes and this moment is so great end for this story... wonderful movie.
Primero me encanta El Lago de los Cisnes, segundo me fascina la música de Tchaikovsky y tercero que belleza de película!!!! amo a Billy Elliot y esta es la mejor escena de toda la película, siempre me conmueve ^.^
and the struggle for billy elliot (and his gay friend) rings true; it's so hard being different, but once you embrace yourself and break free, it's heaven.
I like the father's look, of pride and probably knowing his son will not live the hard life he had. His boy did better than him and that is what fathers want for their sons. I know, I have 4 and that is what I want for each of them.
I feel like all the views in this video are mine.
