@arebelangel Yes, in this particular version they dance barefoot. Generally the men don't go en pointe like the women (though they sometimes do in certain ballet's). Here they don't need dance shoes.

It was a great ending, although most people would argue that maybe they should have shown more to the scene, but the look on the fathers face as Billy Jumps through the air... priceless. <3

I love this movie! Why? because it shows you that if you have a dream and you believe in yourself, it is attainable. I cry all the time at the end too. I've always wanted to be a dancer, but something held me back. Now, I hope to incorporate dancing some how some way into my adult life.

I just finished watching this movie and wanted to find out more about both Adam Cooper and Gary Lewis. This scene was incredibly beautiful and moving. I replayed it about 10 times before I turning it off. Lewis' emotions as he waited for his son to dance and Cooper's - subtle yet powerful - reaction to being told his family was in attendance were riveting. The entire cast was excellent. Love the movie!

One of the most fascinating aspects of this scene is that the man who plays Billy (age 25) is Adam Cooper who was actually starring in Michael Bourne's re-adaptation of Swan Lake featuring all male swans instead of female as in the original version. It is truly a beautiful re-imagining of a classic love tragedy. The costume Adam is wearing as well as all the young male dancers featured in the wings of the theatre are all from Michael Bourne's production. It is absolutely breathtaking.

His father's reaction in the theatre is heartbreaking and fantastic acting. I think that his Dad was experiencing more than joy at his son's talent and his personal sacrifices for Billy. I think that he was fulfilling his dead wife's expectations of him as a father.

All the acting, music and costume would fail if this, penultimate scene, were not edited PERFECTLY !!!!! This American LOVES Billy Elliot. The Film and the Stage Play ( with Kyril Kulich ! )

Still one the best endings I have evr seen for a movie. Emotionally overpowering. Not just this scene but also the few minutes leading up to it. Billy's father in the big city (looking almost lost), coming into the theater, and the absolute pride you can see in his face that MY son has done it. All my hard work in the mines has been for this moment. And it always breaks me up when the father does that gasp, realizing how beautiful his sons work is.
