  • what does the lyric mean?

  • And was that M J inspiration for the moon walk at 1:40

  • Chaplin was and is the most badass person to have ever lived in the film industry.

  • Watched this in U.S. History today. Love Charlie's movies!

  • Charlie Chaplin the best at what he did

  • Charlie Chaplin now there's a man who knows how to make perfect gibberish.

  • Chaplin was a Genius !

  • @wheatbull Ek wil hê jy moet my meisie baba XOXOXO

  • at 2:01 --> The lyrics should be "tule, tule, tule vaan" he speaks some finnish there, it means "just come" (come is said 3 times there:P)

  • What a genius:)))))

  • If this is a silent film...and Charlie is singing? Who is really singing here???

    I can't believe it's Charlie Chaplin singing!

  • @SimonaPiano Yes, he is singing. The film was made after the sound had appeared in films, but Charlie wanted to show we don't need it. Therefore it's a silent film with the exception of this scene.

  • I'm looking for the chords to this song, would any one be so kind as to tell me what the notes are?

  • Is this his actual voice, or is he lip synching?

  • what language is he speaking?

  • @madiakawaffles I think that he's singing in french and italian, but the lyrics means nothing at all

  • @madiakawaffles the language in which he sings doesn't exist. His aim was to show that the sound is not needed in the film and we could understand everything without it.

  • @Saby727 So what was the purpose for the sub titles, and the laughter about

  • PURE GENIUS!

  • I love a good Sinora Pilasina in the morning.

  • its fantastic I laugh ever single time!

  • haha one person posted on some help forum thingy what he's really saying and, the first verse for example, its like: beautiful down satore / I our so cafore / If I our covort / I you, you the two

hahaha complete nonsense! haha love this song and i love saying "Je la tu la ti la twaaah"

  • We won't be able to have a great genius like him. He's just so fantastic !

  • He is speaking jibberish. He did this so not to run the experience for people viewing it it in other countries.

  • a great genius.... this was the first movie through which the audience actually heard Charlie Chaplin's voice for the very first time.... a very fine song coposed by the man himself.... the lyrics though do not mean anything coz its a sequence where Charlie cannot remember the words of the actual song and he has to make up the words at the very moment....

  • Solangeag1 made i just translated This "letter" letter is not really just a bunch of incoherent syllables (words that sound like french italian - it tells the whole story only with gestures (a young and beautiful - see the gesture of face, buttocks and breasts), and a fat man, older and richer (gestures with respect to the belly, mustache, a cane) that either hooked up with her. They get into a car and he tries to move into her, she gets angry (on hand slap * lol * silly) and he gives you a ring

  • @MadJadiel i think she asks for the ring and when he gives it to her she leaves :P

  • GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Meu,aqui no Recife colocaram uma placa dizendo que esse cara era Ateu,é verdade?

  • Великий Классик!!!!!

  • rest in peace great man

  • could someone translate it into english?

  • @6113161131 Can't translate gibberish.

  • Si la tu, la ti, la tua!

  • Man, when he throws up the papers and start looking around where are them JUST MADE ME LAUGH A LOT

  • Meraviglioso.

  • Wow, the meaning of this song is spectacular,

Chaplin only wanted to show that speaking is not necessary to understand a movie,

all this because he was about to loose is job when sound was introduced in filming.

  • @Emy0426

Chaplin was a man who didn't care much for modernization and felt the message was more importaint than the effects (sound was considered an effect back then). Yet he masterd this new media perfectly (as can be seen in the final speech of The Great Dictator - that's a timeless speach people should listen to over and over again).

  • can someone translate to English please. Love this scene would love to know what he's saying.

  • @akuma123321 they don't mean anything! He's singing nonsense because he can't remember the words to the song. The inflection of his language and his facial expressions are what tell the story. Genius

  • How I love Charlie Chaplin and THIS MUSIC!!!!

  • what language does he sing in

  • michael jackson le copio el paso...jejeje

  • modern times and city lights are my favorite from him. for people who do not like silent films. just watch them and really get to know the art and history of the films actors & everything, you'll end up liking and appreciating them:-)

  • can someone translate it to english ?? i love this part

  • @unknownx181

impossible! the lyrics does not make sense! all the words have no sense!

  • what does he say??

  • I do'nt get how is it possible to dislike on this. It's one of those masterpieces that will last forever...

  • Plus actually speaking by a metaphor id speak dat his nonsence is vey meaningful... not by what exactly the words are by all is going on and what is being lived through mhh tho in fact in his words was something meaningful describing girl who his character here loved :)

  • I am actually from RUssia but spealing well ENglish I dont know French at all & I actually think im even sure that Ive understood everything at what the nonsence he sang and whats going on...Chaplin is a King of COmedy especially inXX century and actually hes such a good technically dancer that I think Im even sure that if he only tried once he could dance hip hop perfecty he just didnt kno'about such a dance and music style yet...he jest peobably needed to try... try anything and that's a magic

  • I cant believe one of the best scenes in classic cinema was spoke in gibberish. Bravo

  • CHARLIE CHAPLIN THE BEST

  • Paulette Goddard is really beautiful.

  • Best, meaningful lyrics ever!...

  • ha wait is this not in another language? is it really just nonsense?

I was hoping for a translation

  • @unorthodoxJ

Its a mix of italian words and english words in non-coherent sentences. Just a bunch of nonsense sentences. Kind of like me saying

"A taxi with a pickle, I'm climbing up a moustache. I eat a big pinata, la tua tua tua" etc (not that those were his words- just an example of what he was doing)

  • @Treemeadow They're also many french words.

  • @MathieuValbuena

OOPS, thats what I meant XD

  • @TheGainsbourg C'est un mélange de français, italien et je pense même de l' éspagnol.

  • only Chaplin could make up words & make it sound hilarious!

  • Charlie Chaplin: un humano extraordinario en todo el sentido de la palabra, magnífico, mi esposo y yo lloramos de la risa con esta escena... jajajajajaja... desde que la vi no puedo quitarme esa tonadita de la mente y la tarareo todo el tiempo... lo amo.

  • He's so small!

  • AKA "My Name is Not Merv Griffin" (as heard on the Dr. Demento show)

  • je crois que ce langage il y a que lui qui peut le faire !

  • True masterpiece!

  • je la posa ti la tuaaaa!!!

  • The best there ever was

  • This is a song in grammelot language. I think that some words of lyrics are wrong. He says: "ça mucha(cha) si innamora" (that we may translate: this girl falls in love). Not: "Se muntya si la moora". Obviously that's only an opinion.

  • They don`t make them like they used to

  • sublime inimitable!!!!!magnifique

  • he was the only englishman that could speak other language than english. :)))

was and will be the only one.

    that's why he became famous!

  • "Nonesense lyrics by Charlie Chaplin" ahahahaha!

  • alguem sabe onde existe essas leendas em portugues????

  • Actually these lyrics don't mean anything in any language. That's why it's called "nonsense". Charlie Chaplin imitated French, Italian and German but didn't speake or understand these languages.

Once upon he was on the dancefloor, he didn't know what to do, so the Lady told him: "sing, nevermind the words" so he sang nonsense words. But we can guess it's a love song anyway, that's the magic of Charlie Chaplin.

  • he looks so sweet

    R.I.P Charlie Chaplin

    you will be loved

  • wow ! you put the lyrics below! finally i ll be able to sing along! :D

    chaplin is a genius!

  • EPIC!!...Chaplin, a marvelous example to see that old school and classics are amazingly good!

  • Only chaplin could sing or say nonsense words and make it sound and look meaningful. He was great!

  • @JoaquimRaminhos i agree i saw the great dictator and honestly cracked the hell up when he was playing the dictator...hes say sourkraut or shnitlze all of it was nonesense lmao i dont think there are many actors who have his ability to hypnotize the audience

  • @JoaquimRaminhos He was great? He IS great!

  • @JoaquimRaminhos He was great? He IS great!... Nevermind his death, wich is only a small bump on the history of his carrer

  • @versusvideo Correction accepted and agreed. Chaplin is and always will be a great artist and man. Best regards.

  • @JoaquimRaminhos Armstrong can too... But Chaplin's the MASTER !

  • Maravilloso

  • 0:30 MOONWALK

  • he was the greatest ever,

  • can someone please explain that scene ... And what that means? No matter the letter

  • Comment removed

  • I've been told that in this film charles chaplin tried to expose why sound wasn't needed in films cause he was against it. That's why everyone in that scene laughs eventhough the lyrics are unsense.

  • Fantastic that you put those lyrics under!

    Noncense and yet so understandable

  • if in good "satore" i are i know "cafore" i are if "cavore" i the you the "ti" the you the spinach or the cap cigarette brings beautiful this rakish "spaghaletto" if the you the "ti" the you ma "pilasina" you want the taximeter? the "zionta" his seat you the you the you the wa
  • but I don't know what does it mean , what's the lyrics by english ?

  • It doesn't mean anything. It's just nonsense lyrics.

  • Pure genius! Incredible!!

  • since chaplin wanted to give his character "the tramp" a universal identity, he doesn't speak a specific language, just like grantscharoff said, it's just gibberish. And he's freakin' awesome!

Unbelievable how after so many years he can still make you laugh. A real genius!

  • He does speak english, hint silent films.

  • you can tell by the lip movement of course but when he spoke for the first time in his films he didn't want to do it in English.

  • lol notice one of his "french" words is actually taxi-meter

  • really l like this song!!

  • He is saying nothing :) A few words only here and there.

The rest is just gibberish :)

This song is actually the first time Chaplin ever spoke with his voice in the movies.

  • the very best chaplin thank for video
