One of my fellow students in high school was named Charlie Brown, and he was a very nice person. When the song with his name hit the charts, I felt bad for him. I liked the song but not the fact that others might make fun of anyone with that name.
This was the theme song to my recovery over heroin addiction.
I cannot describe the hell involved with detox. But this song is the perfect way to describe the feeling when you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel; when you know it will soon be over. It's nearly every emotion combined into one unexplainable one.
We loved this record. Little did the Coasters know that there was a gang of 9 year old English kids running round shouting "Who me, yeah you!" to their teachers.
@willpill4hoops and the clarinet too! Heck, just all real instruments. It seems like you're hearing less and less big bands and more and more electrical music.
Growing up my father always sang this song, and when I met a class mate of his who coincidentally was my teacher he told me my father would sing this in school and I like that thought. I am another one of the ones that wonders if I wasnt supposed to have lived in that time but what can ya do.
I went to school in this era. One of my classmates was actually named Charlie Brown. This song could have been about him, he was always in trouble with the teachers. Not bad, just if something happened, he was involved.
@Cardoniman A lot of people think "Charlie Brown" was about the Peanuts character, but it wasn't. Plus, "Peanuts" HASN'T become completely irrelvant. (That's why the comics section in many newspapers around the world STILL run Peanuts cartoons, even though new installments ended 11 years ago.)
@shmuli9 I guess you're right. Firstly about the song not being about the comic strip, and secondly I shouldn't be saying such things about the Peanuts being "irrelevant" because I haven't even seen that much of them to begin with. I suppose that I just thought that because the whole mood of the "Peanuts" seems a bit banal. But I haven't really looked into the actual writing to know if it is of quality work or not. Thanks shmuli9!
@Cardoniman Indeed... As I said, a lot of people (including me, until I found out differently) thought that "Charlie Brown" WAS about the Charlie Brown in Peanuts... I don't know many people who think that "Peanuts" is banal, but I DO know many people who think the characters "act like little adults, and not like children". But some of the old cartoons are also VERY funny (the ones from the late 1950s and 1960s)...
These are a fake group of Coasters that's why they don't sound like the record. I should know my Father has been with The Coasters since 1955 and the group never Parted. Most quit are we're fired......
@01cisum i know a law was passed that one original member had to be in the group to use the names. these fakers sound awful and have their tongues cut out.
This is one of those pirate Coaster groups! There are only two original Coasters that still work, that's Carl Gardner, and Leon Hughes. I'm a musician that works with Leon Hughes sometimes and none of these guys is him or Carl, and this certainly is not the original recording!
The song is good amd funny.

That "Daddy-O" portion shows how old this song is: a gap in the culture for 50 years.

@Rajamuttu I can't tell you why, because you are not in the 'inner circle'!
Suggestion: Look up William Shattner's "Mr Tamborine Man" when you have
mastered the secret message within, I will recommend you to the 'inner circle'.
You'll only pledge for a couple of months.
You will be required to learn the words to 'Does Chewing Gum lose it's Flavor
On the Bedpost OverNight', when you can sing it backwards, I'll give you
further instructions.
And don't say 'hell', otherwise it will hurt!
