Toxic, that's a pretty f**'d up assumption that people who join the military are "at risk individuals." The majority of people going in want to do so because they actually WANT to be in the military, which I know is hard for the military haters to understand. 2nd, a lot of the enlisted have at least some college behind them, or take college classes while in. 3rd, vets on average do much better in life than do their civilian counter parts.
I don't where you came up with your "facts" eelzen, but it's been against the law to panhandle in SF since 2004. The problem is, the city government of SF won't enforce the law. So get that straight. 2nd, where do get the idea that all of these "vets" are the homeless in SF? Almost all of the homeless there are the dope addicted, runaway leftovers from the 60's who flocked there during the "summer of love" and ruined a once great city.
The City Council's duty, if it feels that too many of it's citizens are joining the military, is to create alternative opportunities for the 'at-risk' individuals, if you will. For instance, offering enticements to local businesses to create more entry-level jobs, so that the high-school seniors--who are, obviously, the most likely recruitment candidates--see plenty of other opportunities besides joining up. If they STILL want to join up, the city has to allow them that freedom and convenience.

The weather in CA and the Bay Area happens to be the best in the country, which is a plus for any homless person and b/c of tourism there is a good opportunity to make money from panhandling. The experience I was explaining was my personal experience sitting at a junior college campus about six months ago... I have been privy to listen to many recruiters and find many of the same situations. If I have or have not joined the military makes no difference on my position.
My debate here is not whether recruiting tactics are acceptable or not - just the freedom to disagree with them.
You can disagree all you want, but that doesn't mean your point of view should be given special treatment through legislation that supresses the rights of others. It's really that simple. Your city crossed an unexceptable bouncy with its antics on Jan 31 and again on Feb 12.
Well, I keep seeing the outrage of the "anti-american attitudes" of Berkeley and demonstrators being exemplified (most of whom are students at the school across the street with nothing else to do) - as far as what the City Council did, there is a legal recourse for these tactics. If the Federal Courts decide the city overstepped it's jurisdiction then they can force them to rescind it's decision (which is likely the outcome.) I see people asking to withhold education funds and the like ...
Why is it slanderous against soldiers to disagree with recruitment policies?
Is it wrong to disagree with the ethics involved in delivering empty promises in order to recruit soldiers?
(I personally have heard recruiters to: promise to cure downe's syndrome; promise a recording contract; and promise recruits they won't be sent into war. These are just lies.)
If I think it is wrong to lie to people to get them to join the military, do I want American soldiers to die? (i sincerely hope not)
Also, this concept of Anti-Military Berkeley is fallacious. Do any of you know how much military technology is created at UC Berkeley? Hurting the University in Berkeley ultimately hinders the US Military.
The City of Berkeley contains a wide range of people. There are people from every part of the spectrum within the city. That's one of the reasons it's been a beacon of democracy for so long. The radical liberals tend to get a lot of attention, and the homeless republicans get almost none... but they are all there.

One of the best moments I had ever witnessed at a concert took place in San Fransicko when I saw the Drop Kicked Murphy's. They a played a song dedicated to some fallen troops in Iraq and said something about it not being a just war. Someone in the crowd said "fuck the military!" The band stopped playing and said whoever said that needs to shut the #### up and leave because we don't tolerate bashing the military. So in my honest opinion I think we should pull the recruiters out of there, pull out the sheriff's and anything that the state pays for. We need these additional military personnel because of present unrealistic reliance (or mismanagement) on reservist. Toxic, that's a pretty f**'d up assumption that people who join the military are "at risk individuals." The majority of people going in want to do so because they actually WANT to be in the military, which I know is hard for the military haters to understand. 2nd, a lot of the enlisted have at least some college behind them, or take college classes while in. 3rd, vets on average do much better in life than do their civilian counter parts.

So get that straight. 2nd, where do get the idea that all of these "vets" are the homeless in SF? Almost all of the homeless there are the dope addicted, runaway leftovers from the 60's who flocked there during the "summer of love" and ruined a once great city.

The City Council's duty, if it feels that too many of it's citizens are joining the military, is to create alternative opportunities for the 'at-risk' individuals, if you will. For instance, offering enticements to local businesses to create more entry-level jobs, so that the high-school seniors--who are, obviously, the most likely recruitment candidates--see plenty of other opportunities besides joining up. If they STILL want to join up, the city has to allow them that freedom and convenience.

It's not ironic b/c it's not true. Vets aren't "flocking" to San Fransicko or The People's Republic of Berkeley. Some vets do live there, but it has nothing to do with "liberal" programs. The weather in CA and the Bay Area happens to be the best in the country, which is a plus for any homless person and b/c of tourism there is a good opportunity to make money from panhandling. SF BTW is a terrible model for how to take care of the homeless.

Also. the University of California, Berkeley, is a state university, not a city college. The Semper Fi act is designed to financially penalize a state institution for being located in the same city that has a policy some find disagreeable.
Maybe UC Berkeley will stop designing weapons for the military (if the soldiers get them, as vote vets have pointed out they are not getting necessary equipment.)

I am sure ony one can find an some horror story with anything we choose to get involved in; however, the vast majority of recruiters do their jobs professionally and accurately.I never met anyone in my 5 yrs in the marines who was lied to or felt betrayed by a recruiter. Additionally, anyone who joins the military without thinking that they might end up in a war is a fool and shouldnt be in the military to begin with

The experience I was explaining was my personal experience sitting at a junior college campus about six months ago... I have been privy to listen to many recruiters and find many of the same situations. If I have or have not joined the military makes no difference on my position.
My debate here is not whether recruiting tactics are acceptable or not - just the freedom to disagree with them.

Well, I keep seeing the outrage of the "anti-american attitudes" of Berkeley and demonstrators being exemplified (most of whom are students at the school across the street with nothing else to do) - as far as what the City Council did, there is a legal recourse for these tactics. If the Federal Courts decide the city overstepped it's jurisdiction then they can force them to rescind it's decision (which is likely the outcome.) I see people asking to withhold education funds and the like ...

Is it wrong to disagree with the ethics involved in delivering empty promises in order to recruit soldiers?
(I personally have heard recruiters to: promise to cure downe's syndrome; promise a recording contract; and promise recruits they won't be sent into war. These are just lies.)
If I think it is wrong to lie to people to get them to join the military, do I want American soldiers to die? (i sincerely hope not)

The City of Berkeley contains a wide range of people. There are people from every part of the spectrum within the city. That's one of the reasons it's been a beacon of democracy for so long. The radical liberals tend to get a lot of attention, and the homeless republicans get almost none... but they are all there.
I find it is odd that the people who claim America is so great because of it's freedom want to put limits on the freedom.

I honestly do not agree with the city council. (Although, I do believe the tactics recruiters for the military use are a bit unseemly, at best) I was actually commenting on the people who want to silence any protest against the military and military policy.

Since US troops are in Iraq, 'wanting' them out has no power (I wish/hope for a peaceful world, so what). sighe - the "enemy" for a combat solider is NOT a matter of conflict date, of opinion, or government. The ENEMY is the one trying try to kill you (that moment, the next hour, or tomorrow). Any war that fact does not change. When you exercise your right to protest while troops are in a combat field you encourage that enemy, no matter how much you want to rationalize. No, that does not mean most who protest wish death on anyone, it does show they do not have full comprehension of their actions.

One of the best moments I had ever witnessed at a concert took place in San Fransicko when I saw the Drop Kicked Murphy's. They a played a song dedicated to some fallen troops in Iraq and said something about it not being a just war. Someone in the crowd said "fuck the military!" The band stopped playing and said whoever said that needs to shut the #### up and leave because we don't tolerate bashing the military. I was surprised that a lot of the people there cheered the band. It was awesome

The behavior of those protestors (Code Pink and World Can't Wait) at Berkeley, was simply disgusting. I hope Berkeley does suffer the consequences of their actions and I hope the Semper Fi Act passes!

FASCIST: a government uses its police power to prevent and authorize disruption to a legal use of private property. Berkeley did so by granting special government sanctioned parking permits, and allowing use of public sidewalks solely to intimidate.
