From what I heard, after the Man in Black died his house was put up for sale. One of the members of the Bee Gees bought it. When the house learned who the new owner was, it committed suicide.
You know, at first I thought this was gonna take the piss, but now I see this is just a perfect song for what has happened. And not even in just country, in every god damned genre. The legends die, and the genre dies with them.
go to the site and hear about the backround story of the song, it is so so true, Johnny Cash is dead, Waylon, Marty Robbins all the great artists are gone, and the ones we have today??? There are Stars in the way there are Stars today, but Stars like JR, Waylon..... not a chance of seeing some one like them EVER again, IMHO.
The only Superstars that are LEFT are the "old" ones that aren - thankfully - not gone yet, Kris, Willie, Emmylou...and... Larry Gatlin!! God Bless JR Cash
I remember when Larry Gatlin was the quarterback of the state championship Odessa High football team. I was a sophomore at Odessa College and my boyfriend would drive me by his house and say "That's where Larry Gatlin lives." His father was in the oil bidness. It was a nice ranch style home that faced a park in West Odessa. I forget the name of the park.
I just saw the gatlin brothers and larry told us that he was dear friends with johnny and was asked to sing at his wife's funeral and his. Larry wrote this song because johnny had once said that if you think of a song just write it, it doesn't matter if it's a hit, and he did just that to honor him and all of the old country legends
I miss you Johnny. and to all you people the that are not listen to the song, its morning his death, and saying how old country is best, and it's referring to the house of Cash-type music.
@Axion3812 it's a I-IV-V pattern in G, and that little guitar melody in the intro is (on the A string) 5 3 5 3 (E string) 5 3. then it moves up to C with the rhythym, then back to G, and then that little walkup to D is (on A string) 0 3 4. then back to G. and when you hit the 5th fret on the E while playin that melody, be sure to bend and release it to nail the feel! nothin' to it, man. hope i helped and didn't confuse!
This song is about the passing of an era in music. There are very few people out there to carry the songwriting flag. In fact I believe the riff that they are using are some original Tennessee Three compositions.
People hear what they want to hear. Anyone that criticizes this song because they think it's disrespectful may as well dig their own grave and jump in head first, because they're in for a life of pain. But there is hope! Open your ears and really hear what's going on in this song...and in life.
No, Larry was never married to one of Johnny Cash's daughers. Marty Stuart was married to Johnny's daughter Cindy In 1983 and they divorced 5 years later. Marty is now married to country legend Connie Smith.
I love Larry Gatlim & The Gatlin Brothers and Johnny Cash. This is a tribute to Johnny Cash and great country music and anyone who knows what can see that.
okay, even if these people like johnny cash and are trying to tribute him, its really disrespectful, not to mention the song is terrible, they didnt even write original music....they are fools..
to finish L.G. & Co ---a period of messed up cars, hair, appliance colors-- any of you guys familiar with the J.C. Song" Delia's Gone" and for you smarties who do do you know when it was first put on wax?-go listen to it( 1962 The sound of Johnny Cash) and never ever EVER try to predict a JC attitude or try to evaluate his world view too closely. some narcissistic fan was blowing himself over his special insights---"MEADOW MUFFINS!! - remember what K.K.s quintessential quote was! saddest thing
ok im ready to play whos the biggest JR CASH fan- I weigh 175 lbs, if you are heavier then you are ,unless you go by height im 6'0". That area burned up a few people Roy Orbison lived next door,he was not going to sell the land after this fire took fam mems from Roy, L.P did die --smoking in bed-that sucks. . I can not think of one ,1,uno,eine,-- cash song that has fiddles and a steel guit!?in fact only The O.P.P. song has violins,j.carter "signed off" why wasnt M.H. playing bass on FUFOX
to all your refrobates that think that Cash would have not approved of this song, i give the bird. Its a song about the way things are, and thats what he was all about.
Those of you who are offended by this song: Larry Gatlin was very close friends to Johnny Cash, and named one of his sons after him. This is a tribute song to him, and also a song that represents passing the torch to younger singers. The Gatlin brothers had 33 top 40 hits....ain't nothing to make fun of there. You go boys!!! Glad to have you back !!!
maelynnb, you need to listen to the song a bit more... its not making fun of cash... its sayin that the old style country music died with johnny cash and they miss it!
man thats messed up cuz that dude couldnt hold a candle to johnny cash and i dont care if he new him or not he should not have wrote this song and thats all im gonna say
I dont like this... I know il probably get givin out to by ya'll but i dont think this song shows much respect for johnny at all... i dont care what he SAYS it means to him... i think its disrespectful
and if johnny WAS looking down and smiling... then its just because he's too kind hearted.
While I agree with the sentiment, I think this song sucks. It's overproduced Nashville cheese, written and played by some of the originators of Nashville cheese. And that ripped-off Luther Perkins lick repeated ad nauseum... Pee-U! I don't think JC would buy this pop.
@FastforwardTheRewind i agree. early on in his career, larry slept on johnny's floor in nashville until his/larry's big break came. johnny helped larry greatly in the early stages of the gatlin's career. larry has always been respectful of johnny.
@johnrunion Yes Larry and The Gatlin Brothers have nothing but respect for Johnny Cash, and if you can't see that, then I don't know what else to say, but listen to the lyrics.
Their is a video where John Carter Cash, son of Johnny and June and Larry are talking about this, and he said that his father would have loved it and he did too.
@FastforwardTheRewind It's a sincere form of flattery.. Johnny Cash was a different kind of hero, a real idle. Except for the drugs and other stuff. People don't listen to him for that, but it was real. Honest, true things that happened. And he sang about the truths in the world, the honest situations, not the sugar-coated ones. Wore the black for the poor and broken down =)
This is most definetly a Tribute song! The name of the CD and concept for the album of work is "Pilgrimage" (as in looking back thru the ages of country music and it's biggest influences.)
The Song "Johnny Cash is Dead and his house burned down" is co-written by Johnny Cash and Larry Gaitlan... Just saw the song writers on GAC Video 5 minutes ago... Very Cool Song! Peace (2-fingers)
Rock and ROll use to give out Johny Cash he was up there with Elvis as a rock legend and he was the greatest Country Legend ever to live he makes Hank Willams Jr look like shit nothing aginst Jr im a big fan but seirously
Evidently some of you guys dont know country, Gaitlin bros have been around for years with many big hits, this song is great there not making fun of him, this is much respect to him listen too the sound
It's a metaphor, like you will find in most good stories, the way to tell it, is to use symbolism.
