MAC Asphalt Plant - Seniors and Residents Speak Out

All state DEQ's and regulatory agencies enforce very very strict air quality standards for hot mix asphalt production facilities. These facilities are under more scrutiny to be as clean, if not cleaner, by volume than say your wood stove or fuel oil fired furnace. I am an asphalt plant engineer as well as an employee of a CARB certified source testing company. We test everything from cheese factories to 10 megawatt generators, trust me, asphalt plants when operated correctly don't emit much.

One more thing, since you claim not be a part of MAC, how would you know that they invested $10m in the facility? If MAC really was committed to their community and not just profits, they would be a hero here, not the villain. They have an opportunity to be a different kind of company. They should seize that opportunity and voluntarily move the plant.

Asphaltcrusher is an idiot. Asphalt plants certainly do release toxic chemicals, not just steam. Asphalt is a PETROLEUM product, not just sand and stone. Additionally, would asphaltcrusher feel the same way if it were his grandmother that was being forced to breathe this toxic air? His grandfather? Indeed, what if it were his children that were being forced to breathe this toxic mess being relased in the air around Jeffersonville. I think his feelings would be very different.

I live next to an asphalt plant and have no problem raising my family in this neighborhood. Maybe you suspend making ignorant comments and do some research before you make any more videos. You must work for MAC. No one has said or written anything sladerous or libelous about MAC, only asphalt plants in general. They should NOT be located next to population areas or close to schools - period. Locate them where they belong in an industrial area.

From this video, you can see that the put the asphalt plant in a gravel quarry. That quarry is a big hole which means it's been there awhile. THEREFORE THEY DID PUT IT IN AND INDUSTRIAL AREA!

It is not an industrial area. It is a residential neighborhood with a school less than a half mile away. Check Google Maps before you speak on this issue again.  But maybe you'd be happier if they could just move all the children and elderly folks to a place away from the plant. Because it's just about big business, isn't it? Forget the human costs, forget the children, forget the seniors' quality of life, forget all of it as long as MAC can make a buck! You're a real prince buddy.

I wished I worked for MAC. They invested over $10million in this plant when they could have setup an old piece of crap but decided to purchase a state of the art, environmentally friendly facility. I have no relation to MAC or have even heard of them before but don't agree when people make comments without all the facts! Maybe 30-50 years ago asphalt plants emitted extreme pollution, but they are simply a big mixer that combines ingredients (Sand, stone & bitumen) together.

A quick check of the Indiana Dept. of Environmental Management (IDEM) web sites reveals that this plant has apparently been issued violations for air pollution several times since it began operations in 2006. So, not really 30-50 years ago, huh? Maybe we could just move the children and the senior citizens to another place all so MAC can make a buck. I bet you'd like that, wouldn't you? You seem to be a "profits before people" person. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Asphalt plants don't smoke, they steam. Plants heat up sand and stone and as a result, steam is released.

You should really do some research before you make LIBELOUS statements! The only thing that an asphalt plant burns is Natural Gas or Furnace Oil and they burn it much more efficient than the furnace in your trailer. Maybe you should put the wheels back on it and move!

Goober, what are you twelve( sorry i meant 12, I"ll correct myself for you grade 1 reading level). The black sticky stuff is called bitumen( get mom or dad to help you with that one). It is mixed in after the sand and stone are heated to make asphalt. Bitumen (call mom again) is the a by product of gasoline distillation ( sound it out, maybe mom will give you a gold star if you get it right).I"ll stop,it gets really complicated, it must be almost nap time for you anyways .

Ah, so NOW you admit that there is more in asphalt than sand and stone and, in fact, it is a petroleum product that is mixed in to it. And do you still cling to your silly and ridiculous assertion that the terrible smelling stuff coming out of the stacks is simply steam? It's not really so complicated. If it were simply steam, then asphalt plants would not be regulated by state environmental management agencies or the EPA. They don't regulate "steam."
