  • fucken scary shit.

  • How many times are we gonna see this same "HALF A TRUCK" driving around on YouTube? It's awesome already! Now go put a body on the damned thing and FINISH it!

  • thing sounds wild!

  • Who needs a cab when you've got a screamin' 2 stroke deroit!

  • cool redneck style

  • When will the truck be finished?

  • When I have time = Not soon enough

  • @Grigg3 I hear you there man

  • Is the RTO 6610 a single, or twin countershaft trans?

  • Twin countershafts

  • Ha ha ha!!! That's Awesome!!! 5/5!!!

  • That's awesome!

  • You're right Grigg, this one is a gigglefest too.

Sounded like someone was flogging an

unfortunate wilderness beast, then y'all burst

forth from the underbrush like Bo and Luke. Why

does "Dueling Banjos" come to mind as possibly

    making a fantastic soundtrack?

  • I wanna go-kart like that one!!

  • Ha...that's great! Looks like you guys are wearing ear protection......and rightly so :)

  • Leid Diesel Service in PA 717 776 7725 Ask for Timothy. They do first class work and completely understand these two cycles. I get all my parts and a lot of advice from them, really nice folks to work with, and more than fair. They have about a half dozen pickups with 53 series Detroits counting both shop and personal vehicles.

  • @Grigg3 they are great folks

  • i plan to install a 4-53/ or 4-53t in a 1978 f350 4x4...what kind of trans do i need to use? can i use a 4 or 5 spd?

  • You'll need something with an OD, so 5 speed or better.

go to 4BT swaps . com they now have a section for Detroit conversions

  • would the 4-53 engine be more economical than the 4-71?

  • For my application, a reasonably small truck, yes. Otherwise it depends on the use, in different applications each engine can be more economical than the other

  • whats the engine size? is like a 4L or something?

  • 4 cylinders at 53 cubic inches each = 212 cubic inches, or about 3.5L

  • Wow! Looks like a hot rod semi-tractor! Of coruse they didn't have the ten speed with the hi/lo contorl, back in 1948, just arnd the corner. A Five speed with two speed rear, with switch, or a ten speed comba with five and two speed ((5-sp.duplex) would have been used in 1948 before the "Roadranger days".

  • Best I can tell Roadranger had a 10 speed like we know them today, with an air shifted range as part of the main transmission, starting about 1953 or 54, but not twin countershaft till 1963.

So I'm not far off year wise on the idea, but my RTO-6610 is new and improved compared to it's younger brother the old R45 Roadranger from the early 50's. (Chevy did NOT offer a "Roadranger" in my body style)

  • god i love that sound! it makes me wish i had the money and space to build something like this. so far it looks great.

  • I have 22.5" wheels. Do a google search for "The Stovebolt Page" then click the "Tech Tips" tab, then scroll down to the "big trucks section" and click "Wheels and Tires for Advance Design Big Bolts"

  • I have a 53 GMC that I am doing a simmilar engine swap... just no turbo:( My split rims are very rusty. What are you running for wheels?

  • the 453 was first put in the 79,I had about one onch at the fire wall,on the 48 I have five,so I am going to slide engine back 4 inches, that should give me room for rad,cab looks good on the 79frame,hope to have the slide back done tommorow then the overhanging brake pedals then the steering still a ways to go,when the cab is dead center over the wheels, you need a bracket to set the back of cab on ,the side mounts are off just a little but it is where the frame takes a dip

  • ow my, all that lead uo them that thing....its still cool though!

  • I changed my mind on the 48cab,I found a real good 56 chevy will us that instead,I looked at 2 chevys with studey cabs, and one with a 50chevy on 79frames they had very little work,to mount they used the mounts that came with the study cabs or the 50chevy-the dip in the fram is where they put the boster,-finally got my detroit runnig right, ready no to start on cab,I have on more detroit so when I get finished on this one I will put it in a studey fram---love the sound -

  • that must bolt to the flywheel housing and not a bell housing,I have both housing, what a tranny like that worth----if you go to Detroit diesel 79 chevy frame ,thats my project going to put on a 48chevy cab---have you done a lot of work with Leid in penn

  • Transmission uses an SAE #2 clutch housing, and engine has #2 flywheel housing, normal industrial stuff. You seem to have a different setup on your truck.

The RTO6610 can be expensive, an older direct drive RT610 can be reasonably cheap, check junk yards and rebuilders for prices...

Do you have more pictures of your truck? how much trouble to fit the cab over it?

I deal with Leid Diesel Service regularly, great folks, very helpful.

  • what are you using for a trasmission

  • Roadranger RTO-6610 a "small" ten speed overdrive transmission, weighs about 425 lb installed.

  • Do you know how much a RTO 12513 weighs? and would it be a little "heavy" for a truck application? I was thinking of one for my 68 gmc with a 305 V6. It would be neat.

  • A 12513 should weigh about 715 lb dry, without clutch housing or shifter, so figure on about 815 lb installed. My guess is it is way to heavy. Even the 6610 could be a bit much behind only a 305 in a small truck.

  • iight, thanks for the info grigg.

  • Awesome!!!!

  • where is that 1948 lowcaed it the truck is what I have ben trying to biled but with a 1955 ford 2 ton and the same with a 1949 dodge what I am looking for is some one that can help me find the parts and phone numbers to find parts that is all ok thant you

Iam looking for the 4-53t that i can bye at a good price.

  • AWESOME.

  • sounds good man. my father was thinking of either getting a 3-53T or a 4-53T for his 76 Ford F250.

  • Lovin' it, Grigg. Nice to see the project coming along. Sounds great, love the way you have it geared. Hope to start my conversion project sometime in the next century, LOL. Keep it up! (How's the body coming along?)

  • dont you mean "on" your 48 chev

  • picky picky.. :)

  • Sounds good Grigg.

  • hahaha more mroe more

  • Sounds awesome! I figured that you were going to fly by at like 150MPH. Gotta love them screamin' jimmies.

  • Sweeeet!!!!!

  • Now thats what I call redneck! but I like it.

  • WOW!!! This has got to be my favorite vid on youtube! You have done a great job on that truck. Sounds great. that gives me a lot of needed inspiration for mine!
