@Cambridgegraham yea, that definitely looks like a fast, hairy chested place to drive near the limit, especially when the tail snaps out in the vid, and the driver has to feed in an armful of opposite lock.....priceless!
@usmcsniper2015 Back then, you only made a pit stop if you had a tire going down or had mechanical woes. Regular mid-race pit stops didn't start in F-1 until the early eighties. Before that, unless you had a rain to dry race, you went flag to flag on one tank of fuel and one set of tires (what a concept, eh?!). But yeah, it would be interesting to watch a modern crew try to scramble to change the front tires on this rig.
@usmcsniper2015 In those days pit stops were avoided like the plague. Cars were fully fueled before race and the tires expected to last. IIRC, regular pit stops only came into fashion in the 80's.
Am I right in thinking that March also made a six-wheeled F1 car, with a double set of rear tyres? I certainly remember having a Scalextric model of such a car, in Rothmans livery. I can't find anything about it on youtube so perhaps it was canned before starting a race?
@trashcanalive Yeah, after the P34 began racing, Williams, March, and Ferrari all developed 6-wheelers (with 4 wheels at the back for all of them), but none of their cars ever raced. The Ferrari was especially unusual because the 4 rear tyres were on a single axle. I think the March that you mentioned is called the 2-4-0.
@trashcanalive I think i remember an interview with maybe Max Moseley, and he said that the 6-wheeled March was purely a marketing tool, and that the Scalextric model of it was the most successful thing March ever made!
One thing I don't like the car is when its engine is not being covered by panels. It looks completely exposed both from the top and from the sides, as if it is unfinished. Otherwise, thumbs up for its groundbreaking design that no one can now follow or copy.
Goodyear actually killed this car before F1 did because they were not interested in developing tiny tires for only one team. F1 outlawd 6 wheeld cars after Tyrell decided not to continue with the program.
Nobody mentioned the fact that with 6 wheels, under braking, the wheelbase changed by about 2 feet depending on which pair of front wheels locked up first! If the forward wheels locked up, the wheelbase would be short (oversteer) If the rearward wheels locked up, then massive understeer. With todays antilock brakes, that design would actually work very well. Now we just need an engine with 24 tiny pistons to lower the rear of the car and a midget to drive it. (yes, I'm drinking beer!)
@tn21beer: the P34 wasn't banned. Its problems were due to Goodyear not developing the 10-inch tire. It wasn't until long after Tyrrell shelved P34 that the FIA decreed that all cars have only 4 wheels.
@mellilore: Actually, weight distribution isn't an issue; it seems to be all about the tires. See the P34 racing in Historic GP competition, with active development on the tyres from Avon ... (There are minor issues, weight, front brake cooling, etc).
RIP Derek Gardner, what an amazing and innovative car you designed (amongst others of course)...and built in secret in your garage at home, amazing!! My father bought me a model of the Tyrrell 001 when I was a small boy and I've been a massive Motorsport and Formula 1 fan ever since. Thanks for the memories.
@Gamereo Too much weight on the front end, and moreover lack of front tyres development, since they were the only ones in need for those special sized tyres
this really is what kids would have painted...

constructors in those days experimented with so many styles, and some of them were pretty cool like this one. you don't see it in F1 nowadays.

6 wheels = more tires to change = longer pit stops, didn't they think of that when they built the car?
