Funny - when I went to a francophone summer camp in Quebec, Canada they sang this song, with certain changes to the lyrics...including substituting "roi d'Angleterre" by "reine d'Angleterre"...all this time I thought the song was a quebecois song about franco-english wars during the reign of Queen Anne, when it turns out the counsellors at camp just switched the lyrics to reinforce their anti-English and anti-monarchist ideals (the head of state of Canada was then, and still is, Elizabeth II).

Si je puis me permettre, il n'y a pas de "vraie version", elle se sont toutes modifiées avec le temps, si bien qu'il y a des versions edulcorées (avec zut au lieu de merde), ou alors "tirons" au lieu de "buvons".

Although all was not as clear cut and simple as those battles. The world context is to be taken inot accounts especially the French interests in the Indian Ocean and Souteast Asia and the routes to it, a Portuguese domain. Without forgetting the French prevalance in the West Indies when entering the Treaty of September 1783.

French interests were wiped out in 1811 when every single French colony was taken Mauritius Syechelles were ceded along with Tobago and St Lucia

The French navy were still getting beaten Savanah, Cape Henry, St Kitts, St Lucia, Jersey, Mona Passage, Semana, 2nd and 3rd Ushants, Gibraltar, Negapatam. Wo could forget the battle of the Saintes in which the French admiral De Grasse was captured?

@BaisseTonSlip it's normal that the french navy was inferior to RN. England hadn't continental frontiers with austria, german states, spain (russia during the napoleonic wars), prussia... so you hadn't to keep a huge army to keep your territory. Yes you won a lot at sea, but you had better trained officers, seamen, gunners, and superior ships because you had a bigger budjet for sea than the french one...
