You're not using the ear taper guards correctly. You don't go from the front of your hair to the back. You're supposed to start from behind the ear in the back, and move towards your face. The shorter end of the guard is for cutting right above the ear while the longer end is to protect your hair length higher up.

If you're cutting the side of your head really short then it doesn't matter but then there's really no point in using the guards.
