Paul is my favorite character out of all the series because of his personality. Yes, he is obnoxious and self-centered, but that's what makes him cool. Also, he is very respective to his elders and he was also nice to the kid who he gave his Azumarill to. Plus, he doesn't really get angry (excluding his battle with Brandon) or distracted. If you remember Paul's battle with Cynthia, all the people watching were making fun of him when he lost, but Paul didn't angry or distracted.

From the youtube videos I've seen I don't find Paul a very interesting character. I think he's a narrow-minded and cold-hearted person who doesn't have any likeable qualities (unlike some other villains).

Ash needed this type of enemy though, as it had never been done before.

I don't think he is so much misunderstood though, I think in the past he's not had it easy so he takes it out on everyone else, which is probably why he is so cold to ash when he tries to make friends and be nice to him all the time. He sees Ash as weak and probably thinks he's had an easier time.

I should have called him Ash's 'rival' than villain.

it was recently reveled in a japanse episode (i think its 126, i forgot) that paul traveled with his brother to kanto (after he obtained his starter) to watch his brother compete in the battle frontier. After Reggie's humiliating defeat to Brandon, Paul soon became adamant towards his pokemons strength, and wanted to prove that he could succeed where his brother had failed leading to his attitude and so forth (correct me if im wrong)

I couldn't disagree more.

Gary was a one-dimensional character who disliked Ash because of some childish feud. There was no depth to their rivalry whatsoever.

Paul has much more depth. Their rivalry goes deeper than a mere childhood feud. There's genuine differences in his training methods and relationships with his Pokemon. Paul also has an interesting and developed backstory.

I know that Paul is an ass, but he's one of the best characters that the writers have created.

I'd have to disagree with you on this subject. I admit you've got some strong points. Even though Gary was just teasing and Paul ACTUALLY hates him, we know very little about him. This is like the Kasumi case all over again, all's we know is what his sibling will tell us, (considering Reggie at least opens up -.-') and to be honest, much more about his past is truly unknown. So as sad as it is, they actually had more depth with Gare-bear. *frustrated*
