No, you can use firefox extension that's call "Google Reader Watcher". Search that from Firefox add-ons site or google it.

And what is the advantage of this as opposed to just having an rss feed in your bookmark toolbar folder?

That you can use it anywhere (in iPhone or other mobilephones, other places or different programs), when it's on bookmark toolbar, it's only there (and I think that it's stubid, if you have almost 70 feeds, like me)
