Everytime I hear a Morbid Angel, I can't help but shiver a bit when I hear Pete's huge talent. THe guy is just ... scary. Just listen to that fucking double bass drum roll, it's inhuman ! Seriously, each dude in this band is just amazing, I especially love Trey's hectic solos.
Im going to take a guess and say that they are singing about satan, but in this song they speak as if he has come from a frozen land [in some legends of satan he comes from a frozen place, in others, a place of heat and lava..]
plausible, but ive not heard any stories of kings trying to slay satan.. unless thats a reference to "holy" people trying to conquer "heathens." the line "I summon the strength of the gods" also throws me off. i figured with morbid angel's "new style" it would be another demon or "ancient one" that theyre speaking of..
I think the song is about those who are so sure of their religion, Christians in particular, hence "Crusade" is mentioned. Clues being:
"and there are other worlds than these"
and
"I summon the strength of the gods
and we are one"
So it can't really be about Satan, again to repeat, I think it's a song being cynical towards religion's absolute assurance of itself and dismissal of other beliefs (heretical or pagan) without considering whether they are praising the wrong god.

Ever since Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, i loved Morbid Angel's new sound, but what is with all the songs being about ancient gods? When i think of angels, i think of christianity, and when i think of morbid angels, i think of anti-christianity.
Well, they were always pagan as well as satanic. Just look at the lyrics for "Lord of all Fevers and Plague" from their very first album Altars of Madness, or "The Ancient Ones" from Blessed are the Sick. Their lyrics have always been a mixture of satanic, ancient sumerian(pagan), and lovecraftian influences combined with anti-christianity. And this is no exception. The lyrics of this album are overall anti-christian.

Everytime I hear a Morbid Angel, I can't help but shiver a bit when I hear Pete's huge talent. THe guy is just ... scary. Just listen to that fucking double bass drum roll, it's inhuman ! Seriously, each dude in this band is just amazing, I especially love Trey's hectic solos.

Im going to take a guess and say that they are singing about satan, but in this song they speak as if he has come from a frozen land [in some legends of satan he comes from a frozen place, in others, a place of heat and lava..]

plausible, but ive not heard any stories of kings trying to slay satan.. unless thats a reference to "holy" people trying to conquer "heathens." the line "I summon the strength of the gods" also throws me off. i figured with morbid angel's "new style" it would be another demon or "ancient one" that theyre speaking of..

I think the song is about those who are so sure of their religion, Christians in particular, hence "Crusade" is mentioned. Clues being:
"and there are other worlds than these"
and
"I summon the strength of the gods
and we are one"
So it can't really be about Satan, again to repeat, I think it's a song being cynical towards religion's absolute assurance of itself and dismissal of other beliefs (heretical or pagan) without considering whether they are praising the wrong god.

I'm pleased you enjoyed the song.....about the weed smoking though.....I'm not too sure about that stuff man. :) I always thought Morbid Angel was about higher planes of thought as well as satanism, anti-christianity and anti-religion in general as well as sumerian spiritualism and lovecraftian poetry.....but weed? Shouldn't that be Electric Wizard or some other Stoner band instead? :)

That's why they're a perfect band to get high to!! i think you might be alitlle too attached to the "stupid stoner" stereotype because I'm much more comprehensive to this type of subject matter when I'm high, not to mention I get into playing/listening to music so much more...I don't just like to sit around and stare at lava lamps lol

Ever since Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, i loved Morbid Angel's new sound, but what is with all the songs being about ancient gods? When i think of angels, i think of christianity, and when i think of morbid angels, i think of anti-christianity.

Well, they were always pagan as well as satanic. Just look at the lyrics for "Lord of all Fevers and Plague" from their very first album Altars of Madness, or "The Ancient Ones" from Blessed are the Sick. Their lyrics have always been a mixture of satanic, ancient sumerian(pagan), and lovecraftian influences combined with anti-christianity. And this is no exception. The lyrics of this album are overall anti-christian.
