I agree that he isn't coming off as pretentious in this video, but while I love Ubu and The Modern Dance might be my favorite record ever, he does come off as such elsewhere (in other interviews). Read some of the interviews on Ubu's website, he unfortunately does come off as pretty pretentious, which is a shame. Still like him though.
"Establish a language to develop over time" frustration leads to metaphor --a cup that has many angles and faces that you may or may not know.. WOW, so profane and fantastic it keeps me up at night. Time to bring in the Three Stooges.
the metaphor describes the mind's ability - tendency - to reduce complexity to the level of a sign or symbol. the "cup" can be any multifaceted phenomena - in this case it is pere ubu. his point is to actively use your mind to think, not simply consume and represent symbols.
I actually think this is a really profound statement. I mean, it's superficially ridiculous. But he truly captures the difficulties of progressing as an artist. And he does so with a sense of humor, too.
No; we cannot all agree 'he's pretentious'. The 'cup' in this example is empty, but it has the potential to be anywhere between that and running over. It can also contain anything you like, from crap to caviar. It could also be in a lake, or on a table (remember The Book is on the table)? Your eyes (and ears) need to be open to all possibilities.
I feel he made a brave attempt at answering another dumbass music interview question. I wonder if Sting is 'embarassed' by his early work?
A few years ago I saw Ubu at Lola's Room in PDXOR. After the show Thomas came out into the room. He approached my friend and me. He was very friendly and open. I had heard he was a very reticent and aloof person, but this encounter blew that whole image away. He's a very friendly fellow and I had a nice time talking to him.
my cup is full.

You can lead a fan to water, but they can only get a drink if they buy all your albums?
Dave Thomas is a hero.

Pretentious? I see an appropriate response to a stupid question.

I think we can all agree that you have no idea what the word "pretentious" means.

That's too epic. Next time I pick up a cup, I'm just going to study it from different angles for a while to confuse people around me.

An intelligent person proves one doesn't have to be an idiot just because he's got a microphone! Refreshingly amusing.
