  • You go girl! Nice job. Good info.

  • Need RESISTANCE! Great video

  • Im in a survival situation... my lighter broke and i want a cigarette

  • car batery tree!!!!!!!!!

  • LiPo packs or Li-ion start fire much faster, when you short them, the junction of wires turn glowing red immediately with smokes

  • by the way, if you use surefire, by shorting lithium battery, it will give you a nice bonfire

  • You showed different types of batteries. C's AA's and AAA's all have the same power but the c has the most in it.

  • Holy Crap it actually works!! funny.

Not possible with cooper cables, to bad.

  • if you have a battery powered fleshlight, which you seem to, based on what you say during this video (watch again if you didnt catch it)....you would probably have some carpentry wool for your clit

  • The reason that the earphone cord didn't work is because it conducts electricity too well. What you want is something that conducts electricity, but with high resistance. The resistance is what causes the wire to heat up. The reason that the steel wool works is that the individual fibres are really thin. The thinner the wire, the higher the resistance.

Steel wool has the advantage that the steel itself is combustible, as long as it can get enough oxygen.

Message me if you want more info.

  • u can wipe your ass with the steel wool

  • You totally live in arizona xD. Pink tile roof, gravel backyard, and palm tree xD

  • lol 3:15 holy crap it works lol your funny :D

  • Thanks this totally helped I didn't have a 9 volt battery so I used two D battery's thanks

  • but why bring this stuff when you can bring a lighter

  • Frauen und Technik.....

  • I am glad you showed this. :)

  • r u a chick or a dude

  • when I was 6 years old the fire marshall came to my school to do some fire safety demo's. a 6V lantern battery and steel wool saturated in rubbing alcohol makes one impressive flash!

  • You should of also have tried some of those 123 batteries. The ones the surefires use.

  • Each size of battery, D, C, AA, AAA, is about the same voltage (1.5V). So, each should be equally effective for starting a fire like this. However, the larger batteries will be able to light more fires in this way.

  • Hy like hyu bettery science. Hyu heff Spark.

  • Are you sure that making a video was a good idea? Just saying... Dan & Ken might get ideas.

  • Well, I am gona start bringing some steel wool and batts just for lighting a standard fire on backpacking trips, it is way simpler than flint if you ask me.

  • lol hot soapy mess

  • that is wicked crzy awesome!

  • if you hold 2 wired down to batteries directly the wires will smoke and melt, but idk if it would be hot enough to burn tinder, if you touch the hot wires directly to the tinder while holding to the batteries it may do it

  • t some vaseline on the cotton balls they'll burn for a while

  • i use 9 volts, i think they are the eaisiest and best because they have both the positive and negitive on the same size

  • I've heard some survival experts say that the only survival tool is your brian. Someties when I think too hard, people say they can smell smoke. AND where there is smoke, there is FIRE!

    Nice vid. Thanks!

  • awesome video Ally, I think the next time I go camping I'll have to bring extra supplies and try to light the fire like that just for the fish (explanation: hell-of-it sounds like halibut which is a fish... yeah... I'm weird...)

Also, reading rainbow was like my favorite show as a child, I was so upset when it was cancelled...

    Mad love Ally!

  • I wasn't expecting either of the the brillo pads to work as well as normal steel wool. Maybe if the second one was dry, it would rival steel wool.

I can imagine if you took out a bundle of 2 to 4 individual wires from the headphone, it might work. As a group they can handle the amps flowing through them, but alone they would probably be overloaded and start to burn.

  • Your video may save someones life someday. Thks Kat.

  • I would take steel wool for cleaning bad stains from cookware.

    Great video! very helpful!

  • She said that......

  • Ally where you get those mad scientist specs at?

  • You should put warning sign for these video. There is a reason why on batteries is warning: "do not short-circuit". They could heat very quickly or even explode.

PS: D cells explosion is nice when done right :)

  • Very Cool!

  • very nice Ally, I found in the past that the thicker the steel woolk is, or more dense the more intense heat you get, you cna alos blow on it to really get it hot!

  • I have known about this for a few years now....but im sooo happy for you. You learnt something that really did amaze you.

    My own favorite quote is:

"When was the last time....you did something for the first time?"

    Well...for you mate...that was today.

  • "It's holy crap my life sucks right now."

The little nuggets of wisdom in your videos is what makes them stand out from all the other survival/gear vids.

  • Great and educational videos!!!

  • Great Vid. I have always picked off a two or three finger pinch of the steel wool and NOT stretched it out. The sparks will not spread very well on their own. After a few deep breaths and well aimed blows the bundle becomes one hot dense "ember" and will light almost anything. But, you don't have to take my word for it.

  • I love doing this!
