Tim is refering to the low tolerance level many whites have because of the belief that their lives should be free of stress. Im white and i try to recognize white privlege (as an activist). Its hard enough to focus on your own racism, but sometimes when i try to talk and disscuss white privlege with other white folks its very frustrating. I hate to sound pessimistic but sometimes i feel really hopeless.

Racism, discrimination and privilege are huge factors in explaining present day social and economic disparities. However, they are several factors among many. For example, when I was a Spanish teacher, the working class Chinese, Korean & Indian immigrant students did much better than my white, Latino and African-American students. And accordingly the average income of Indian and East Asians is higher than than of the average white Americans. Just something to think about.

He is deathly wrong about cutting and self-mutilation being a result of the privileged having a weak tolerance to a lack of control. When it comes to both race and gender the more oppressed groups are more likely to self-harm. Females are more than twice as likely to cut as males and the same (although not quite as strong) can be found when comparing whites to oppressed races.

Tim is refering to the low tolerance level many whites have because of the belief that their lives should be free of stress. Take for instance the subject of bullying, most blacks are like "so fing what!" Bullying only became a big deal because white kids have shot up schools because of their inability to deal with it.

When one interprets racism as structural -- which, if one looks at the history of colonialism and at the power dynamics of the present -- it IS structural, then one realizes that the deck is certainly not stacked against white people, but the opposite. Certainly there are issues of class to be taken into consideration, but whites in the US (and globally) largely control capital.

When you leave terms like "racism" and "white supremacy" undefined and muddled, you open the floodgates of misunderstanding, anger, and hatred. Instead of acting on impulse and having knee-jerk reactions, why not seek to understand what people say? I find it much, much more appealing to use sentences like "I am confused about what you mean, could you clarify that?" as they seem to do the job better.

Im white and i try to recognize white privlege (as an activist). Its hard enough to focus on your own racism, but sometimes when i try to talk and disscuss white privlege with other white folks its very frustrating. I hate to sound pessimistic but sometimes i feel really hopeless.

Tim Wise makes a good argument for the existence of white privilege. It’s hard to believe that any educated, honest individual could deny its existence, but I guess there are a lot of uneducated, dishonest people out there, or it may be that there are a lot of smart people out there who know a good thing when they see it and are afraid to so see it go.

Racism, discrimination and privilege are huge factors in explaining present day social and economic disparities. However, they are several factors among many. For example, when I was a Spanish teacher, the working class Chinese, Korean & Indian immigrant students did much better than my white, Latino and African-American students. And accordingly the average income of Indian and East Asians is higher than than of the average white Americans. Just something to think about.

Tim Wise is a moron. I had to read some of his articles back in college. His arguments always the same: bring up past injustices as if that somehow justifies treating people differently based on race today. Hey Tim, how about we work to eliminate racism by eliminating racism? No, Tim thinks it's just great to treat people differently based on race, as long as only the "right" people are discriminated against. His self-hate is palpable. And his slam-poetry speaking style is embarrassing.

@paxson001 you're missing the point. The point is that certain entities (systemic, psychological etc.) in this country are inherently racist. For a large portion of this countries history, the dominant group, has tried to maximize pleasure while minimizing effort. These entities have served to keep a group of people from acquiring the same wealth/knowledge as the dominant group, as well as systematically creating a default which doesn't represent what the country is about. Racism, by far, its bigger than white and black. There are ethnic wars throughout the world. I'm a Haitian-American English teacher in South Korea and I've learned of the imperialistic movement Japan tortured Korea with and personally, most of my racism came from cultural differences with African-Americans in the states. Cultural, Ethnicity, are always ignored when it comes to racism.

I appreciate the message Tim Wise is trying to distribute. I think he's a smart man and he's doing good work.
I believe in the existence of white privilege. Surely it exists, just as male privilege exists.
Tim Wise isn't just speaking "black truths", he's speaking the plain truth to America. Anyone who is literate can read and learn the very same things he's talking about.

I concur with Tim Wise and I have even read his book "White Like Me". He makes many valid points, points most of us (especially white Americans) are unwilling to acknowledge.
What's sad is that it takes a white man to validate the truth of white privilige. If a black man had came out with the same assertions it would be dismissed as, "just get over it". But I suppose if this is what it takes to get white people to acknowledge the intrisic injustice of this society, its a start.

It's ironic, to be sure, but isn't it better that he uses white privilege in the way that he does? As a white man of a similar view, I feel it to be a moral and social obligation to use whatever advantages might be available to me to advocate for change on these issues. White folks were scared of Malcom X, and it gave them an easy out. White folks don't have that easy out when they get criticized by a white man from the south. No matter the rhetoric, the speaker behind it matters.
