There is a beautiful liverecording of La Boheme with Islandi and de los Angeles out there, on Naxos I believe. My father-in-law, an operasinger and tenor himself, knew him well and spoke very highly of him and had the greatest admiration for his voice.
The great tenor Stefan Islandi.'1907-1994' His real name was 'Stefan Guomundsson' He was born in Northern Iceland of a poor farm worker and his wife.Father died in 1917, and Stefan was taken in to live with a friendly couple who lived nearby. When still young, it was discovered that Stefan had an exceptional singing voice, A wealthy Trawler owner paid for his musical education in Italy. Stefan studied with Ernesto Coronna in Milano 1930 -33 and made his debut as Cavaradossi in 'Tosca' 1933.
I SO agree with you: Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear this tenor sing other works?! As for the perfection here, there really ought to be a fine assessed for singing so beautifully. Sadero can ante up 25%, but 75% needs to be debited to Islandi's account. I could easily listen to this 100 times over ... Thanks, khankonchak, for somehow finding -- and then generously posting -- this rare and precious gem.
Beautiful control and sweet tone. But you can tell he has the chops in there if this were something to open up on. Just a nice recording. Never heard of him but then I'm sure that there are a lot of unheard of singers well qualified and only the cream of the crop are the ones to "get a break" or to have had the luck of whatever draw to become famous. Very cool recording. Thanks for sharing with the info as well. Interesting.
Sensible,un timbre rappelant celui de Schippa.
