If you visit this museum, you will immediately understand why the marbles MUST come back. When you walk on the last floor, following the flow of the sculptures (if you don't fall into a trance) you can just turn your head on the opposite direction and what you will see is the actual Parthenon through the huge windows, nothing disturbing your line of sight. Then you realize that the room you're standing in has the same configuration as the Parthenon. Columns, walls, everything. Beat this, BM!

The British Museum takes good care of all antiquities in a free to enter museum where ANYONE of any race, religion or background can enter into. Not only did we find these relics but also researched them. I think we deserve some credit for that.

@chickenruler in reality the overall condition of the frieze was much worse after Elgin's intervention, there were two pieces still standing there by the time of Elgin's visit as we are informed from the diaries of explorers and that Elgin's crew destroying during the process of removal from the parthenon site.

Plus the very important piece of the mature rider that the master-sculptor Pheidias is believed to have carved was critically damaged.

i had no idea it was such a huge project until i was in the city for a convention. i had a magnificent time. we had a memorable convention, wonderful accomodation and a never forgetting tour of the museum in this video. thanks to the athens convention bureau who made everything happen so smoothly (facebook.com/athensconvention­)

to expect the museum to have the aesthetics of a classical greek temple is to fail to understand the fundamental drive of the post modern architect. A building's form will be driven by a deeper understanding of the site and context. Decisions about aesthetics will be made based on much more than aesthetics alone.

We want to unify a particular artifact scattered around the world. noone will oppose to give to the brits other significant artifacts, to present and share our history to the world through the british museum.

They belong to the world, but they have to presented TOGETHER as one piece and what better sitation under the shadow of the rock originaly places.. the rock of acropolis.where all european history initiated..

Certainly Greece won't "punish" the world by not providing the olympic flame. That would have no relevance to the argument posed by Greece - and many other countries - that these marbles are part of an existing art monument and have been extracted not allowing the monument to be complete.

Pompe of the Panathinaia is not an exhibition item as stated by the British Museum but a sculpture placed on its original context, the Acropolis rock.
