Really nice! This may be personal preference, but I really felt like the percussionist and drummer were stepping on each others toes a lot during the groove sections, especially in the beginning of the tune. I think the feel suffers a little when you have two guys playing backbeat at the same time, even if it's on different snares. Sticks and sticks is just too much of the same texture for me--congas with hands would have been money. BUT double backbeat was vital for the set solo section--SICK!!
ONE QUESTION HOW IS IT THAT THERE ARE 6 DISLIKES? CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME PLEASE. IS IT BECAUSE THEIR MAD BECAUSE THEY DIDNT THINK OF THIS GROOVE FIRST. LLLLOOOOOLLLL, !!!!!!! THESE BOYS ARE SICK WIT IT......PLAY ON, I GOT THE ALBUM.
Such a dirty yet veeery clean groove, these videos just blew me away and I've spent the entire evening listen to you. Amazing and inspiring in so many ways!
I hope not only musicians appreciate what you do so you can go out and play bigger show and perhaps come to sweden some day!
I loved it! You can actually feel the band really gettin into it. You don't normally see violinists groovin like that, but they were into it, too. Great vid!
Just to clarify, the song consists of two "motifs'. The first of which is 7/4 and the second is in 5/4. In the drum solo the band is playing 5/4 and the drummer is playing allll over that shit haha. Fucking amazing. Then the last groove near the end is just 4/4. Just found this band tonight, they are phenomenal.
I also notice a lot of people trying to distinguish the time signatures that the drummer is playing from the time signatures that the rest of the band is playing. Now, the drummer COULD in fact be thought of as playing in a different time signature, because he doesn't accentuate in the same place as all of the other band members, but the way I see it, the drummer is simply not accenting the 1 in every measure. It's an interesting for of coloration in the music, but clearly, it works!
If I were to add my two cents in, I find the main rhythm to be most comprehensible when thought of in a repeated pattern of 4/4 followed by 6/8. This allows all of the notes in the first measure to fall on the downbeat, but causes what most people interpret as the 1 of the next measure to land on the "and" of 4. Still, when the next measure continues, the 6/8 signature allows the notes to fall on the downbeat. During those little piano breaks, I'm hearing a constant 5/8 feel.
I find it funny that people try and determine the exact time signatures in a song. You realize that time signatures are completely open to interpretation right? Any musical pattern fits into time, and all a time signature does is allow the listener and the player to comprehend the piece in the most simplistic way possible. I.E. a 5/4 pattern can be written in 4/4, it just won't flow correctly. Thinking in 5/4 makes the pattern easier to comprehend.
@XxStrongDrums1996xX I agree. People don't understand how much music has evolved. You can play a different time signature within the confines of the main time signature. It's done in gospel drumming all the time.
the level of the composition is just amazing here...it's like incomprehensibly complex, but still doesnt appear to be showy or unnecessarily complex. It's just groove!
This is certainly AMAZINGLY AMAZING HAHA....... LOVE WHEN YA'LL CUT OUT AND COME BACK IN..... tune has a kinda Jaga Jazzist feel too.... Loving the organ like crazy
A question regarding the time signatures: I believe the time signatures are very slightly different between the band and the drummer.
For example, I listen to the first section it sounds like 7/8 to the band, yet the drummer plays a bar of 4/4 and a bar of 3/4, making it sound like 7/4 feel. In the next section the band plays 5/8, the drummer plays 5/4 (or 2 bars of 5/8 but snare on the first beat of the 2nd bar).
Would I be wrong in saying drummer plays 7/4 and 5/4, band plays 7/8 and 5/8?
@PenguinMcDuck that would be the easiest way to notate it, though, obviously 7/4 and 7/8 (and 5/4 and 5/8) can be appraised as each other, just requiring different notation. easier to notate it as superimposed time signatures, best to write the notation in the feel desired.
@PenguinMcDuck ... Thats exactly what I thought! I am a drummer and would have naturally followed the melody in 7/8. But the drummer here playing 7/4 over it is really cool ... love it!
thanks.......i sometimes half ass counting my time signatures. i've been focusing less on technicality of everything and more of the groove and mindset of pieces.
What a beautiful thing to see musicians (especially strings!) playing off the page. Love this track...so much fun to see the video. Thanks for posting and keep at it!
This is such a tight track... i love how every musician works together to bring an outstanding sound... drum = amazing... bass... awesome. This track for me works like a mother :D
This is great, i really like the playing, vibe and tune. However there has been a lot of post production stuff here. Ever heard two violins sound like that? That sounds like 12-15 and theres some lower stuff probably cellos. The bass player has a precision bass, but it sounds like a jazz bass to me......
@youbass1 Also, the thickness that you hear on the strings is probably due to the horn section mimicking all the string lines. One of my friends was at the actual session, and had his Zoom recorder in the control room, and surprisingly the result of what was coming through the control room monitors was very close to what the release sounded like.
@youbass1 - There was literally no overdubbing, doubling, tuning, or any other non-reverb based effects added after the recording. It is 100% live. The strings (1 violin, 1 viola, 1 cello) were miked both close and with a stereo pair above them. The bass played was a '76 Fender Precision. Just to be clear. :)
