Oh my God....I remember seeing this when I was five! For years, I couldn't remember what this was - for some reason I thought it was an "I Love Lucy" reunion special and Gordon Gale was William Frawley. I specifically remembered the "King of the Gypsies" line!
I thought maybe Lucy had a cold but I guess all those years of smoking had caught up with her. This looks good though. Vivian Vance was such an underrated actress.
Lucy hated the fact that her voice got so deep. She like so many other heaving smoking woman got a deep voice. Also a little bit of the behind the scenes info. This was Lucy's first appearance on TV without her mother in the audience, because she had died not to long before that and she was really upset and didn't know what to do without her mother there and also that she was being extremely nasty to Vivian back stage.
I read viv's book that Lucy had placed everything on the set just so that viv wouldn't show her facial issue. Thats a nice gesture , its in these times that you see that they really were true friends
I read about this in my Desilu book. Lucy was angry at her mother's sudden death, and yelled at everyone in rehearsal. Vivian did had a stroke from her chemo treatments after finding out that she had cancer 4 years earlier. Vivian sure looks good, and she performs flawlessly, as she did being Ethel Mertz. Her face, voice, and movements were lively and wonderful as ever. As much as I love Lucy, she looks hard, deep voice, and seemed to not age as beautifully as Vivian. What a memorable episode!
Jeez, I worked on this! In rehearsal, Lucy certainly didn't look like Lucy. Hair pulled back, chain smoking, screaming "Where's Gary Morton?". But I tell you, with hair & makeup, she came out of the curtain to greet the audience and she had turned into Lucille Ball!
I barely remember this show being on in the 70's but it is such a great show, seeing Lucy & Viv back together for one last show. If you have a chance to buy this disc, it is well worth the price with all the extras that are on the DVD!
I'm not sure why so many people are focusing on Ms. Vance's facial issue, it does nothing to diminish her performance in this special, which, in my opinion, is what we should be focusing on. In the end she is very much missed.
@MikeRia It's really quite touching in a way - that even though age and health had caught up with them all, they carried on as if it were I Love Lucy all over again. Spectacular.
Wouldn't have noticed if you didn't point it out. She was such a great actress...so full of bubbly energy even this late....that he overall performance distracts from it.
The amazing thing is, even though Vivian Vance had a stroke, she still doesn't miss a step.

Oddly enough the same thing happened to Lucy a decade later. She had a stroke the paralyzed one side of her face.

What about Lucy and Desi smoking all those cigarettes? That's why her voice is so deep, and why Desi had dark teeth.
