This is a typical example of people cashing in on a media brand.
The media rights holders aren't interested in making a "good" game. They are only concerned with the game selling by its brand name. The game developers merely comply with this outlook and quickly slap together a generic game with the brand's trappings. A quick buck is thus made.
Here, the controls seem really poor and there doesn't seem to be any challenge. The graphics are nice and the theme song is catchy, though.
These games appear simple, but kids today don't realize that the controllers at the time were equally simple. The ability to choose the precise moment to yank that unwieldy joystick in the right direction would vex the "modern gamer" more than they can imagine. There was also no such thing as a "save game". You fuck it up... take it from the top.
@fearguis Right on about the controls. In that respect this has to be one of the worst I've seen on the C64. I especially found it weird that you would die if you aren't facing the correct direction (??!) when you jump off those rotating platforms. He-Man in the series was never that much of a wimp!
@DrMabuse2006 there were two for the c64 this one and a graphical text adventure and there also was He-man for the Atari 2600 and Intelevision consoles
@DrMabuse2006 Seriously? well considering that the last Masters of the universe series was that failed Cartoon network reboot(which actually was the second reboot of He-man done there was a short lived 90's reboot as well) it stands to reason that the rumor of a third He-man/Masters reboot done by the team behind the Thundercats reboot in the works is true as I doubt THQ and/or Relic would bother making a game based on such a old ip.
Well, I did a bit more digging. And apparantly THQ bought the rights to the game along with Barbie, Hot Wheels and some other stuff from Mattel. But as of now there aren't any formal plans for a Masters of the Universe game. Maybe they are waiting for the reboot to begin. They are making a Barbie game however if your interested.^^ Wouldn't mind a Thundercats game either. I liked the 2002 CW series.
This game really was a piece of crap, but to a he-man starved child this really didn't matter. What I never understood was the randomness of it all, it would have been better being a straightforward game but oooh nooo they had to go the way of 'collect things, go through strange doors, pass through walls'. And can anybody explain me why you could PASS THROUGH THE FLOOR of the hallway you begin in??? Was it some sort of punishment?
Who would love to see AVGN (Angry Video Game Nerd) to review all He-Man games? that would make a great episode and he can do a little history of He-Man for the viewers including throwing clips from the cartoon and live-action 1987 movie. Mike his buddy can be Hordak or Skeletor as he torments him to play the games.
My personal favourite bit is when the music loops. Leading up to this point the music gets fairly quiet and unobtrusive, but then ...NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH!!! The He-man theme screeches and squarks like a bird protecting its young! I can't help but laugh out loud.
I love the music.

The C64 rendition of the He-Man theme is horrendous! I know the C64 can do a lot better than that, it's just whoever was doing the music didn't care.
Xifihas 2 years ago
you couldnt make it better or it would be more bytes to load!!! and more cpu core and c64 just had 1Mhz

Why does the music slow down slightly, often when there are NO SPRITES onscreen?! *shudders*

I laughed even more by reading your really funny description of the theme.
Comedy gold. Now I've got to listen to this theme again and roll on the floor each time.
Thanks for the laughs.

I am glad I never played this game. Hearing the He Man theme the entire game is a tad too much
suspekt29 2 years ago
This game was OK, but it should have had more actual He-Man enemies other than Skeletor? I mean where was Beastman? Mer-Man?
RoderickStrong 3 years ago
I agree, and they should have made Skeletor a little bit harder to beat, Say after at least three hits
