God, you make me throw up passion to write Joshua. I may have only heard most of your poems today. But I feel the Impact of every word you've said. You're like a stain in my heart that I won't forget. Thank you Joshua for being amazing new influence in my life.
IMPACT*as his words create, are the words of a pure soul.He is a wise and powerful thinker, i love his words, they are the truth and nothing gets any more real.<3 Again obama with his stupid illuminati hand signs kills the mood of the people who know what they mean, what obama does completely contradicts the message Joshua trys to convey with his words, he is against the good that Josh beholds in his mind. It's so sad what this world has come to, if only more people thought like Joshua Bennett..
I cry EVERYTIME I listen to this and I've made numerous "non poetry lovers" LOVE this poem and Joshua. Thank you for your insight.... you are TRULY an inspiration!!
You know why I love this guy? I am a middle class suburbanite yet I'm unhappy as fuck. All I see are hipsters, fakers, racists, self-hating racists, so called "rappers", sociopaths, a bunch of men and women only after sex and power, like animals. Then this guy comes along and is pretty much the opposite of that. His words will be my life support and reminder that true passionate human beings are not a myth and the soul does exist. Amazing stuff
this is one of the coldest poems Ive ever heard in my intire 13 yr old life.I write poetry to and i hope one day that one of my poems will be as good as this one.
Hey,geuss what guys,my name is Joshua Bennett too!!!!but iam white though, and less of a lisp, well no lisp, nice words from this guy,iam not sooooo nice
This is amazing. My sister is deaf. She's 17 right now. I barely know how to say her name . Maybe an "n" for Natashia. I used to cry thinking about how we couldnt ever have a convo with out her leaving getting upset that i never under stood her. here i am 18 years old and still cant speak to my sister the way i want to. it hurts so bad not being able to tell your on flesh and blood that you love them so much. I wish i was more dedicated to learning sign language than i am after watching this
@obamahateswhitepeop1 Oprah has more white viewers and audience members than blacks. It just so happens that this guy is black it does't mean that Obama is racist
@obamahateswhitepeop1 their where white peformers at this event ppl who call others racist are usually racist their self I think u should walk outside and look at the the diffrent races in our country, and when you realize this. take a deep breath and dont be scared cause no one cares about u thanks
@obamahateswhitepeop1 it never seems to amaze me how white always wants to shine even when it not there time. We have had 43 WHITE presidents bringing in WHITE friends and WHITE families and no one seeing anything wrong with that but then we get ONE African American doing the same and now there's a problem? but see i dont blame u cause u're only going based off what it is u hear and what u hear most is ur family. in reference to ur name 4 him to hate white ppl he would have to hate himself
@obamahateswhitepeop1 its amazing how Obama is a combination of both u(white) and me(black) but all you see is the me(black) in him and u(white) you dont see. Its crazy how u can deny your own kind because his skin looks like mine when he's probably genetically made up of mostly u. Its crazy how we're so caught up in the color of the skin that we cant realize that we are all the same and when we die we all look alike we're so caught up on our flesh that we dont have time to worry bout our souls!
That young brother has a piercing and genuine gift. That which is from the heart, reaches the heart. I appreciate him for that expression. VEry powerful.
Simply amazing. He could change the way mankind thinks and feels if they all could see the passion in which every syllable and phrase in that was shown.
He performed at our school today, and it was incredible. He talked about his life, and poerty, and about performing at the white house. everyone was surprised that he was so good, because we all thought it would be awkwark orsomething. also he is amazing at free styleing!

Anyone that thinks that god chose him to have a deaf sibling, so he could learn to appreciate the power of communication and dedication to a loved one, and believe that it was all part of gods hand picked plans before life. This may be the most selfish son of a bitch I have ever heard of
one of the most POWERFUL pieces ever. his sister is very fortunate to have a brother like him and vice versa. the bond between a brother and sister and how struggles only make you stronger together.
Joshua Your sister must be proud to call you her brother. You brought a tear to my eyes. To all the families who have Deaf members ... It is never too late to connect.
whoa... some deaf people *can* be very dismissive of other deaf people who do not sign, or sign poorly. that slowed me down from learning asl for years, and now i will never be fluent, but it is not my fault for my parents choosing to isolate me from all other deaf throughout elementary school. it does happen.
launguage does not determine who will be dismissive. There are all sorts of rude people and all sorts of wonderful poeple. The language isn't the issue and does not impact who is rude and who is not. If you allow rude peoples’ attitudes to stop you from pursing something, then who is at fault? it's never too late. Start online or at the bookstore. Take the time to care about other people, then we foster a society that everyone can enjoy living in. I hope u change your mind and pursue ASL
Listen...with your heart, not by your ears. It is never too hard to learn sign language to form closer bonds among the siblings and family members. What Joshua said rung true among many families with deaf child. They don't bother to learn sign, and they expect a child to learn to speak and hear, no matter how hard it can be. The families will eventually learn the biggest loss of all, lack of bonding. Not lack of hearing.
@StLouisMan3 and you were turned away by deaf people because of your slow signing skills? Um, I dont think so. from the sound of your comment, you sound like an asshole, maybe thats why Deaf people had no patience for you! I'm Deaf and I was raised oralist, my ASL skills are shitty, but my Deaf friends are patient with me and helping me improve my ASL skills. Way to go to slump all Deaf people together because of a bad experience you have! Douche.
@VelmaSabina I'm sorry you feel that way about me. Clearly, I could not have been turned away by ALL deaf people because I only met a handful and was living in Honolulu at the time. Perhaps you feel defensive because you are deaf. I'm Polish and sometimes I have to make an effort not to take offense at jokes about ignorant Polish people.
@StLouisMan3 I am not defensive. I am telling you that you are wrong for being turned off by Deaf people because of a crummy experience you had. I am also a Muslim and I am from India. I know all about racism, prejudice, bigotry, Islamophobia, and ableism. You cannot allow a bad experience to influence your feelings about a particular group of people.
@VelmaSabina I have to apologize for the misunderstanding. I am not turned off by ALL DEAF PEOPLE; I'm only turned off by those who treat me discourteously. I am turned off by fellow hearing people who treat me discourteously as well. I would never have continued to take ASL classes if I felt as you suggest. I am all but certain that one day, I will meet some great deaf people.
@l1nuxun1l Yeah you know, cuz diverting the relatively minimal funds that went into organizing an educational function would pay off this country's debt right?
"And at that moment, those nine letters felt like hammers swung gracefully by unholy hands to shatter the stained glass of my innocence into shard that can never be pieced back together or do anything more than sever the ties between my sister and I."
I know people make comments about "whoever dislikes this is a _____". But honestly, I can't see how you can't like this. It just doesn't make any sense.
@SamSeeSaw Why doesn't it make sense to you? If you know anything about deafness, it often separates the deaf individual from family; they don't feel included because there's no communication there. This young man realized he needed to apologize for not trying to include her.
@HappyCloudedBySad still... no matter if shes hard of hearing or not, you should learn sign language just to be able to communicate with her... she would love you even more... ASL is a visual language, once you learn it, you will fall hard in our world... our world is nothing like a everyday life...
Josh is amazing, his peom, the way he delivers his message is so liberating. He is the futrue of America and i just wish we had more boys like him. Willing to be more then the boy from the hood and allowing their enviorment to dictate who they are and what they will be, but take the pain that the hood, their past, the struggles of life offer and free them selves with words, speak to the depths of every human heart and open peoples eyes. Rather then become a thug headed straight to jail or death.

This is so beautiful & real. From a person who has come 2 know deaf people, it touches the heart & soul, especially when you take the time to know and love them individually.

ASL is a visual language, once you learn it, you will fall hard in our world... our world is nothing like a everyday life...

This made me cry. I understand everything he is saying. To not understand what a sibling with a illness is going through until it's too late
