A BEAUTIFUL collection there mate, very well shot and love the text explaining what each unit is etc... Nicely composed and well put together. I actually enjoyed watching it thoroughly. Thanks for sharing. :-)
I was surprised when I saw this was 4th alarm, but with those exposures I wouldn't mess around! Near where I live we had 3 semi-detatched houses well involved, but only 2nd alarm. he he they even brought hazmat out. I never knew that BK was in NZ, is McDonalds there too?
@MrGerbilBrain There was tons of smoke everywhere from the grease fire, so they erred on the side of caution in adding alarms. McDonalds is everywhere! BK is a more recent arrival, they didn't come to NZ until the 90's.
@chechnya Please don't take this as a dig at you or anything but European brand engines have been proven to be the best available in the world for the task at hand.
@MadPropsToTheHood Those are fighting words hehe. I suppose certain countries have certain limitations when it comes to size and weight of their apparatus. That's why American engines are giant and heavy. I imagine the type and size of structure also plays a big part.
@chechnya At this stage it's all a matter of preference in the world, however you wont find any engine in Europe engine with a Q =P. I don't take preference to either continent or it's engines. I just know that people who do take an interest ran some tests and the results showed =P
thekiwicanuck the urvan just seems a little out dated that's all no offense meant.. They ain't really known for their top speed as far as I know.. I may be wrong
@Nilldal Haha true! I think they're 3.0L diesels, which is enough for a van of that size. This one is based reasonably close to the call and I believe the Fire Police are automatically requested when the fire goes 2nd or 3rd alarm, which was well before I got there!
Yeah, that's right. Most emergency service vehicles in NZ are imported as cab/chassis and then fitted out for local requirements. There are a few exceptions, like some second-hand Dennis and Mercedes appliances imported from the UK by volunteer stations.
They have salvage and spill cleanup gear like smoke extractor fans, and I imagine they would have had to use grit or sand to soak up cooking oil etc on the tile floors.
In the US most the engines carry that stuff I was just wondering. I can see where it would be helpful. Our FD's use fans for extracting smoke and ventilation which I am sure your guys do as well. Thanks, great video as well.
I work at BK in England, our fire alarm goes off all the time, good practice though, not so good standing in pouring rain, thunder and lightning which tends to set it off a lot, but yeah, i get paid to stand outside for a good 20 mins, have a natter, and see a fire engine aha :)
Definetly. It went off Wednesday evening, luckily we only had 2 customers, regulars, and they understood, left and took their food, which always helps, stood outside for 15 mins, even when the alarm had finished, we HAVE to wait for the fire brigade, they turned up, then workers from another shop came round and said they'd been showing a new worker how to use the alarm. I wonder how the fire officers feel about it repeatedly going off though :S, nearly running out of characters aha
Trucks from all over Aucks were shuffled around to cover the central stations left empty. It was all over but the cleanup by the time the 3rd and 4th Alarm rigs arrived... And yes, there was a lot of running, from K' Rd down to the bottom of Queen! But most of the vehicles came down Queen as well, so I got heaps of time to catch my breath when filming! All the smoke had cleared by the time I got there though. And the next day BK had signs on the windows stating "Closed for Renovations", LOL!
I think there was a smallish fire in the deep fryer area, but cooking oil makes immense amounts of thick smoke. It quickly permeated the whole area via ventilation and air con systems, so it looked way worse than it actually was...
@GeorgiePorgie911 speaking as somebody who knows alot about the fire department/fire service, a 4th alarm incident is a 10-24 (Mass Casualty Incident) thats why there are so many. they (fire service) never know if there are casualties and if there are, how many and how severe.
That's partially right - in Auckland the Fire Police guys can use their own vehicles (with a flashing light) to block a road etc. but they definately can't respond to that incident using lights or siren in a private vehicle. They do have a couple of ultralight pumps and vans that do respond lights & siren tho. That Mondeo would've been a District or Area officer's ride, not FP.
Yes that's right! The 3rd and 4th clips were taken from outside IMax. It was still brand new when you were here... Auckland has maybe 3 Ivecos of this model, but the newer model EuroCargo is now a standard appliance all around the country! Iveco NZ now sponsors the All Blacks too!
One time I unexpectedly spotted Ellerslie 274 parked up on a random side street in the CBD. As I made my way over to get a better look, it suddenly activated its beacons, and I just barely got my camera ready in time to catch it responding up Albert Street. Not my best clip ever, given I had like 2sec to get the camera on, in video mode, zoomed out, focussed and myself to an unobstructed position for the shot! That was mid-to-late last year, and should end up on YouTube in due course. Thanks!
It doesn't look like vehicles/people made an effort to get out of the way. Is it not required to yield to emergency vehicles there? OUTSTANDING job on the clip!
It absolutely IS required, but most people don't seem to have the prescence of mind to react appropriately when an emergency vehicle approaches. Not that I've ever heard of that law being enforced. And not that there's anywhere much to move to on Queen Street anyway. And thank you!
yea, people don't care unless they're coming to help you. I rid with a first responder here and people actually have chewed him out for responding to a call because he cut them off, mind you he has 2 sirens, wig wags, strobes and 2 led lightbars so he's very visible.
Thank you, and you're very welcome! That was quite an exciting occasion, and I'm pleased with how the footage turned out. I spend far too much time on these YouTube videos, so its nice to know they're appreciated!
Sorry mate, not entirely sure what you mean about the camcorder! Could you refresh my memory for me? The video description and annotations have all the info I can think of, hopefully someone else can help. I'd say the first vehicle was a fire chief's car, but the NZFS ranks are a little more complicated than that, so I'm not 100% sure...
Oh right! The videos above were taken on my new camera, which has a better mike than the old one... There's another few months worth of the old vids to go, then from Oct 07 onwards they're all taken on the new cam...
Hahaha! I don't specifically recall seeing you there, but looking through my photos, I can see a pink-haired person standing roughly where you would have been filming from! XD I'm a bit of a fire buff (look at my other videos!), so I recognise most of the local units, but the 111emergency website is there to back me up when my memory fails me - see the links in the video description... Besides, most emergency vehicles have their station and/or number displayed, if you know where to look...

why dont they use federal Q sirens over there. I love my Q and would use only it if i could.

Most sirens here are either Code 3 or variants of, or they are locally produced units which are custom made by Nautech Electronics.
