Does anybody have TOTP where Parker is hosting and he says "Well, that wasn't very good, was it?" I would love to see that. I don't think he cared for Suzi Quatro.
nice capture of Graham without the shades, he does need them to deliver his words and songs, amazing how he took command of the stage, grat thanks for sharing
One of the few New Wave singers that could do a decent versionof soul music. I used to go and see GP & Rumour live: they were electtric to watch and incredibly hard working, but somehow never made it as big as they deserved.
I always figured that, like Ian Hunter, Graham was hiding something behind his shades (ugly eyes, to be specific...) But he looks great without 'em! Lots of character.
I've seen Graham with and without the Rumour over the years and I tell you he can still write and sing until this day. The Village Voice gave "Squeezing out Sparks" album of the year honors in 1980. That was a great album and a great tour.
This is such a great song! "Hey Lord, don't ask me questions, please! There ain't no answer in me. I stand up for liberty, but I can't liberate. Who does this treachery I shout with bleeding hands. Is it you or me, I never will understand." I play this song loudly every week on the stereo.
turned me on to graham parker in 78 Ilove cbc fm.genius.Graham paker was so u nappreciated a prodgious talent with a unsophistcated market unwilling/unaware of the genius he offered, too bad just ask ray davies.
Thanx Graham! Thanx YouTube! ...And all of U 4 yer phantastic comments!! PS. one of my favorites, this video; -it's the MUSIC, not the quality of, eh, VIDEO...
Remember a concert in Sydney that was AWESOME with GP. Still remember the feel of that nite. Saw Elvis Costello a few moths later--he played for 15 minutes , everyone rioted & the place was trashed. Great music , great memories !!!! LOL
sounds very much like Elvis Costello who emerged roughly about the same time on the British new wave scene of great songwriters. All the attention went to EC, which wasn't awrong move as he turned out to be the finest songwriter since Lennon/McCartney, Townshend, Davies et al. I've scoured EC's entire catalog over the years; now i think it's time to investigate GP a bit further than i did during that time.
Not exactly what he had in mind when he wrote this amazing song...
I guess you really had to have been there to fully understand what this song meant to all of us Parker fanatics..Put your right hand in the air and repeat after GP, HEY LORD..
when i was a teenager in the eighties, i had a feeling that i would some day love graham parker. it is true now. his songs grow on you. btw, he looks great without glasses (a bit like adam ant!)- intelligent and sensitive
still have it on vinyl.was 17 when he first performed it and the record couldn't be found in my country, heard it in a party and ordered it from UK along with costelo's "i dont want to go to chelsea". I used money made by selling some older LP's of status quo and Gary Gliter. I dont regret it.
great song from a great band, shame this clip doesn't do the sound justice. it sounds oddly flat and muffled... its definatley worth tracking down as a MP3.. or as I did get the album... Parkerilla for preference
It's a pity that kids know the name 'Springsteen' but not Graham Parker, who to me, played a vital role in R&B with the Rumour. I love this speeded up version they do. That's Martin Belmont taking the lead instead of Brinsley, on this one.
Más que The Jam, Elvis Costello, Specials, The Clahs, The Police, etc. siempre Graham Parker movía más y mejor mis pies.

Damn. Haven't heard this one in eons. What a classic! I remember having a different version on 45 (silver Vertigo label, I think).
He really deserved to be a star. Oh well, so much for mass appeal lol.

He has nice eyes - should have shown them more! The sunglasses were a bit alienating. Great composer and singer.

Love this song. Brinsley Schwartz is the most under-rated guitarist in rock.

Went to see him in 78 at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, great gig, one of life's continuing mysteries how GP never really got his dues.

For every Coldplay and My Chemical Romance, there're about 10,000 Graham Parkers. It's just one of the many dark sides of music.

For my money, one of the greatest rock acts ever. Parker had the passion, smarts and pipes and the perfect band. It was too good to last forever...

It turns out that on my favourite Elvis Costello song (Watching the detectives) he was actually backed by the Rumour.
reinpost 3 years ago
Well, by The Rumour's rhythm section, anyway. Attraction Steve Nieve played keys on that record.

Very strange...here Graham's eyes are brown...but I know for a fact that he has blue eyes...cosmetic surgery has certainly come a long way.

Great pacey song. My brother had this on vinyl and i almost wore it out.
Similar to other greats like Fever ( Southside Johnny ) Do Anything ( Eddie & The Hot Rods ) & various Elvis Costello tracks.
Fantastic.

Intersting comment. Back when, Springsteen said Parker was his favorite live performer.
Then they eventually collaborated on 'Endless Night' from Up the Down Escelator'.
