Yes, this is the third movement of Alkan's great Concerto for Solo Piano, part of his Twelve Etudes in All the Minor Keys. Extremely difficult, and definitely not 'chep.' Alkan was influenced by and had an influence on his friends Chopin and Liszt, but he was an original composer of highly inventive pieces and groundbreaking harmonies.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
if alkan, then what composition is it. Then this is another treason that alcan is not original composer...and because of that he is not romantic composer... its very chep composer...
CyrusMc is right. The video is an excerpt from Op. 39 #10 by Charles-Valentin Alkan, the finale of his Concerto for Solo Piano. In my opinion, one of the greatest and most difficult pieces ever composed. I'd like to see you play this. It's not "chep" at all.
@Egide0 was priveleged to hang out with him a bit for 2 years at Vincent D'indy school of music. he was 16 at the time and the best at the school. even among the teachers. used to watch him sight read liszts etudes at speed while turning the pages for him. unbelievable then and more so today. Go Marc!!!!
This piece is 50 minutes long, even by MAH speed. How the hell is he able to give such a technically immaculate finish after all that? It really shames professional pianists who literally stumble after a mere fraction of the length that Hamelin plays here, and gets unanimous praise like "Stunning virtuosity!" (I'm thinking particularly of Lisitsa's Don Juan and Hammerklavier)
@fdaltrey i so agree i made a few truthful comments on her site and got barred!!! she obviously is very self-conscious that she is not that good and just wants sycophants to comment, she can eat my s**t
@fdaltrey So true i have been banned from making comments on her sites because she doesn't like criticism she is a good pianist but nowhere near like Hamelin, her don juan was very bad particularly but she has a cheesy fanclub of mainly pre-pubescent girls
Oh and it's either his Symphonie for solo Piano or his Concerto. I have an Idea it's his Symphonie but check them both out. Infact, check out ALL his pieces. For he is the best composer there ever was, is, will be, could ever be. In my humble opinion :D
Yes, Alkan could play his own pieces. However, pianos back then were much easier to play on: lighter action, and the keys were slightly thinner too. I think Alkan, Liszt, Thalberg, and the other supervirtuosos of the 19th century would need to adjust a little if they played on the pianos of today.
why would you say that? i wasn't being the least bit offensive toward americans in my comment. and we were discussing hamelin playing alkan's music, what does listeria have to do with it?

Yea, heard her Don Juan once, found it meh - but her Rach etude and cadenza are stunning.
At any rate, banning for criticism is rather tasteless, and from what it looks, she actually runs the channel herself, rather than some agent :)
Whatever.

So as Jewell11 says, it's almost definitely a Godowsky version of the chopin etudes ^^
And this is fucking insane! hahaha how immensely difficult =/
