Male lions are the laziest of all the big cats. Female lions actually do most of the hunting. Male cats lay around looking formidable. Any female protecting her young is going to give the intruder the fight of his life. The male lion is not going to want to mess his beautiful mane, especially since the lionesses do most of the hunting, anyway.

Male lions aren't that bad in reality. Sure the females do MOST of the hunting. Both males and females spend about 20 hours per day resting, conserving energy.

Males spend the other 4 hours patrolling the territory and protecting the pride against other predators such as Hyenas or other competing lion prides.

It shows the lengths a MOTHER will go to protect her young. A lion can kill a cheetah with one swipe & she knows it,but she's willing to face him down & use herself as a decoy to save her cubs. Ok so she can run 70 mph,but there's always the chance she could trip in a hole & break a leg or stumble or the lion could go after her cubs anyway,but her cubs come first.
