  • Well done guys....I use this track to teach jazz feel and changes to my drum kit pupils.......you have made a great job of a very tricky chart

Please publish if you can !.....Keep it up

  • "If you are interested in the Jazz Arts Trio's transcription of this piece please visit this link"

Hi, this song wasn't in the book you sell... Do you guys have another book that have the transcription of this song, this is neat!

  • @MrZombs Sorry, no we haven't published this one yet. Maybe sometime... Hal Leonard published a bunch of our others though.

  • ABSOLUTELY beautiful!

  • Here I was just looking to shoot a friend a link of this Oscar track as it's one of my favorite's and yours was the only one I see...but I'm glad to say, it's as much an equal to the original that I've sent it on. If you're ever in the NYC area playing a club, I'd like to be the first to know! Brilliant job.

  • One more thing: in my humble opinion, the point about playing jazz is NOT to be boxed into rigid notions about what jazz is, as sadly expressed by some in this post. I've heard some pretty crappy improvisations in my day. To me, the most effective jazz is when a musician can bring together creativity, artistry, soulfulness, & technique, without ego...("look at me, I'm so creative"). You all brought it together and I for one really enjoyed your excellent performance. Me & Oscar!

  • I'm a music lover, nothing more. Having been surrounded by music & musicians all my life, loving music for its own sake & for what it can bring to the human experience, I'm convinced that an amazing, down to earth musician like Oscar P. would have LOVED what was played here by fred moyer & his trio members. All this elitist talk about "true" jazz misses the mark by a mile. Creativity and artistry comes in many forms. Classics, when recreated beautifully, are the epitome of art at its best.

  • Wow! That is tremendous! You really have Oscar down. If you hummed loudly off-mic it would be perfect.

  • I love this session !!

    Absolutely great !

  • grossartig, einfach grossartig

  • Maybe the drummer would like to brush up on his Ed Thigpen... Just joking. Well done gentlemen!

  • I really enjoyed the video. Thanks very much guys. Seeing you all clearly enjoying the playing makes it even more enjoyable to watch and listen too. The 5 stars are very much deserved.

  • It looked like he was playing it note for note but what we were hearing was Oscar's Trio itself, I know every note of that album and that was it.

  • ah yes, the angry internet browser. The internet is all about opinions my friend. AND, I do know Fred Moyer, AND he is an excellent musician. And how does recording with Mcbride have anything to do with playing Oscar transcriptions live? hmm. I never once said that I think everyone or anyone creates a career playing transcriptions, but nice thought anyways. AND never did I mention that I "have it all figured out". When you want to have a meaningful discussion, leave your attitude at home.

  • yes, both the transcription and the performance is very good. But the point about playing and learning jazz is to be able to recreate someone elses solo, feel, etc verbatim...which is what he has done here. The next step would be to either come up with your arrangment and/or your own solo. That's what the greats did. ALL of them. You can't play your own stuff until you've played someone elses. So personally I wouldn't have put this performance up, but my own based on this performance.

  • I just responded to another guy on this page, like you, thinks he has it all figured out. I am angry. Thanks for the lecture on how to learn Jazz. You don't know anything about this guy or me. I have done many concerts where I perform Oscar's transcriptions, which I know you would snub. But I just recorded my latest CD with Christian McBride and Roy Hargrove. You think we all create a career on playing transcriptions? How arrogant to tell this great player that you wouldn't have put this online!

  • the critics should have your talent-Frederick but of course they don't and lots of "sour Graping" scraping the internet! This performance was and is awesome!

  • Congratulations on such a great performance. I love this track and I have the whole album...this made my day!

  • pretty impressive that you transcribed it, oscar does a lot of intricate stuff... but it is seriously exactly what Oscar played. In my opinion, nothing wrong with doing the head of the tune how he did it, but into the solo section, it'd be nice to hear some creativity.

  • Creativity? You guys just don't get it, do you? This is about paying tribute to not just an amazing pianist but the performance. It is not easy AT ALL. And there is no rule and law that says this is off limits. Ragtime is Jazz and so is BigBand, it's recreated every day. People like you sit back and criticize, as if you are the Jazz police. Second, you have NO clue about this man's creative skills. I'm about to rip into rjpimprov above, so I'll finish there.

  • Oscar Peterson's West Side Story IS the best disc that I own!! Fantastic job on the piano Fred.... WOW!!!! :O)

  • awesome.

  • EXCEPTIONAL!!!!

    I agree with pierjazz!

  • Sorry, no, I don't. But I'll listen again to that. Maybe I should ... I love that whole record!

  • extremely well done Fred, have you got a transcription of tonight from the same album?

  • incredibly well done. You seem to play off a monitor to avoit page turns. Is it a finale file? How to the program know to move to the next page?

  • Thanks for the nice comment. I wrote the music in Sibelius but saved the file as image files. Then I imported the scans into a program I wrote myself which allows me to analyze and practice the music. A foot pedal turns the page.

  • I've exactly the same comment as hartvelt! I hope you'll make concerts all around the world with your perfekt transcribtions of Oscar's, as famous performers who are playing Bach, Liszt, Chopin in famous concert-halls!

  • sehr gut gemacht, ich kenne die Musik schon seit Jahrzehnten "auswendig". Mit geschloßenen Augen ist es eigentlich genau das Orginal. Wer sind Sie, Herr Moyer?
