Regarding that australian saying, "I wouldn't piss up his arse if his kidneys were on fire", in NZ we've our own version; "I wouldn't piss in his face if his teeth were on fire".
In his autobiography, Stephen says he hates having to sing, anywhere, and simply can't bring himself to do it (the only time he did was after a session of hypnotherapy, which only helped him in one instance). He has a great fear of it. So when he inadvertently has to sing even a few notes, you can see him hesitate, before just speaking the words. Interesting to see it in action.
We need a QI panel of Clive Anderson, Dara O'Briain and Mark Lamarr--an entire show of panel show hosts. (Yes, I know Mark hasn't been on Buzzcocks for a few years, but he'd be awesome in that situation.)
@lasoripa Market efficiency requires that firefighters sit on their arses as an incentive to other non-insurance-affording undermenschen. Also Crassus was a cool dude.
@Vault101reject I have never heard anyone else say that. Maybe you just have unusual taste- he is sweet, his delivery is brilliant, and though sometimes he goes on a bit he is generally very funny.
I love this and thanks so much for putting it up. For those with a lot of time on their hands, you might like to match it again, especially mindful of Clive's and Alan's watches. It shows how much editing goes on. Please don't deride me for this comment... I'm not well just now and DO have a lot of time on my hands!
I can see why people see Rob as a smug git, even just based on appearance he looks passive aggressive but his comic delivery is priceless and thats what comedy is about, not what your saying but how you deliver it.
can someone explain to me why people find rob so funny? Before any idiots say I don't have a sense of humour or are just stupid, I have a sense of humour, and am not ignorant. He just comes across a smug, stuck-up git to me.
Wow. I can't believe Rob Brydon's tone during his fire-smoke lecture was apparently so subtle that people are arguing over youtube about the flawed points in the lacking and inexact explanation he offered.
A few weeks ago this happened in the USA - a house was on fire, the fire brigade turned up, and they didn't put out the fire because the people who lived there hadn't payed the fire station tax fee or something.
not to be picky but, its not that the smoke chokes you, its that it contains all sorts of fun acids and other toxins that form from the pyrolysis of that materials in the home, as well as the smoke being super heating, which burns your lungs. also just a little to add that its not the objects in a house that burn, its the chemical in the smoke that burn.
@renshaw30 Probably does that as well, but it's the colorless and odorless carbon monoxide that will kill you first. It's enough to kill you in your sleep well before the flames get to you if you don't have a smoke detector.
Oh, also for anyone interested about the pykrete bit, they tested it on Mythbusters. It didn't work out entirely, but it did do unexpectedly well for some water and wood pulp. Yay for finally knowing one of the answers.
@guysmiley00 The bow looks more like the Yamato's or Iowa's bow than anything IMO, not a modern (or even WWII-era) destroyer bow, and I mean, come on, two triple large-bore gun turrets? I posit that whoever made that sculpture is not a keen aficionado of the world's navies, and instead just looked at some pictures of warships from various eras and said "well this looks nice" and "ooh this'd be good to have", or something.
Or maybe there's another turret or two hidden behind the superstructure.
@Strategiain I can see how the wide range of shapes of destroyers and battleships lends to confusion, but I'd still say that ship is far too small to be a battleship, especially a WW2-era one - they tended to be remarkably wide for their length. I'd agree that the structure probably isn't technically accurate.
As for the guns - there's a great picture on the Wiki page for "destroyer" of a WW2 Polish destroyer with 2 double gun turrets in front, so it's not unheard of.
Why is it that *I* know all the answers this week, and yet the panel is stumbling along worse than usual? Me, a 20-year-old not-so-smart girl, can answer every single question on QI?? D: THIS IS MADNESS
During the whole smoke killing you part, when it kept getting dragged out and nobody was saying the answer, I kept thinking, "Smoke inhalation. Smoke inhalation! SMOKE INHALATION!!!!!!"
@xentech: I don't know about the moon as its a recent discovery, But I would think there would be sufficient water on Mars given how visable its caps are.
@selty: Thx, But I've had time to think about it now,
You'd need a facility capable of melting ice in the cold of space. more trouble than it's worth really.
And even if they did manage that how would ya get it outside without it setting, space vacune is only 3 degrees above absolute zero, plus there'd be all the sawdust floating aroud, lol.
@DottyDotDitto If it's a structure that's not meant to make a return trip, maybe. The astronauts wouldn't like it if the craft they're in melted on reentry.
They made a pykrete motorboat on Mythbusters last year. It disintegrated after about half an hour of use. Either Adam and Jamie did it wrong or Stephen is talking bollocks.
It kind of depends what Adam and Jamie were trying to test, exactly, but it does sound like they got it wrong. A 60ft boat of plain ice was built in the US, and took an entire summer to melt. Pykrete has the same melting properties but is very much stronger than plain ice -- nearly as strong as concrete.
I saw that episode and they did prove it had a tensile strength far greater than concrete and steel, The only problem is the water you were sailing in would have to be below freezing for the boat to stay in tact for any length of time, or like Stephen said keep it cool from the inside out with some kind of refrigeration. Either way it limits the applications of pykrete, still pretty cool stuff though.
curious about the copyright on "5 gold rings." i grew up in canada and have always heard that sung as "5 golden rings." i wonder if copyright still applies.
the copyright is in the tune, not the words, in this case -- the words are traditional, as is *most* of the tune. You could sing "5 sticky buns" if you like, it wouldn't make any difference.
Eh, I don't know. I thought he dragged that "fire doesn't kill" bit on about a minute past where it was funny. And he only did for a minute and ten...

An Aircraft carrier made from ice. We British could of added that to the bouncing bomb, another classic WW2 wacky invention by the UK.

This could just be the rambeling of an internet nut, but I can't help but think that Pykrete sounds like the perfect material to use in space.
We've known theres water on Mars for a long time and they've recenty dicovered water on the moon.
- So it would greatly reduce the building materials needed to be brought from Earth, therefor saving cost.
- It's very strong.
- Temperature/Melting would be a non-issue.
- And Weight of material during building would be redused due to gravity.
Just a thought
