Regarding saving the file as a .sub or .srt, it really depends on what text editor you choose to use. I used TextMate (Mac), but every text editor is different. If you are using Notepad, you may need to choose 'All Files' in the save as dialogue.
Could you explain, after you generated the timed file and then copied and pasted it, where did you paste it to, in order to save it as a .SUB or .SRT file? Did you use notpad or MSWord, or it looked like a DOS background? That wasn't really clear to me, although everything else was nicely explained. Sorry, no ideas on the timing as it just seemed to rely on being able to press the "a" letter quickly enough to correspond.
Ha ha, yes, I know what you mean :-) To be honest, this video is not a permanent one (which I noted in the details section) . I will actually be removing it and putting up another one in its place which I *will* caption. That's a promise. This video is very much off-the-cuff and the narrative is not thought out. Hope that carlifies
Can you make the closed caption for all youtube videos this way? Even if those are not uploaded by yourself

Great video and very easy to follow. Although I would suggest normalizing the audio for your voice so it's not so quiet.
Try freeware like Audacity and use the Normalize effect.

seems pretty easy and well explained. But how on Earth do I save my document as a .SUB file? What program do I need to do that?

It's really poor... Why does someone need it then they can add captions o.o...
