Vibrato is quite easy when you get the right technique. I first did it when I was grade 1 by accident - thats how easy it is. All you do is put the wait of the violin/viola (i play both) into the chin rest so it feels like the neck is sort of floating and then put pressure on to the neck using your thumb wiggle your finger (thats what i do and my tutor says i have grade 8 vibrato) :S

my teacher told me to move my fingers back and forth on a pencil to practice. Somehow i picked up the idea in one day. Usually it doesn't come that easy. My teacher if made it so I get free summer lessons if I want them. Sje must have thought i was best out of my bunch......she usually gives them to a highskewl student...i am a middle school student.

I think wec all wish that at one time. Our orchestra is the middleschool....6th,7th and 8th together. Out 6th graders dont even try sometimes and we are expected to make up for the sound we are lacking. As for the left hand thing it could be you just have to move your instrument further up on your shoulder or u may just need a bigger instrument. it gts harder to keep up when your instrument is getting to small.

yeah, my instrument is already a 16 in. well i remember when i was in 6th grade and i actually cared about sounding good and most everybody else was goofing off. In my orchestra we have like 10 people all the same grade and 4/10 of those people arent good and barely try wich bugs me so much! This one time we had to play a song called Arlington Sketches and we sounded so bad because nobody would ever practice! i almost died of embarrasment that night.

I know how you feel totally. In the the middleschool orchestra we have like 30...maybe 40 memebers and in our highschool orchestra theres only like 10,12 maybe at the most. As for my sizement I am in between a 14 in. and a 15 in. so I am stuck with my 14 in because the 15's are still to big. Its really really funky.

You know, I don't play either instrument, but I can give good advice... I had wanted to play drums for my school, but my stupid band teacher (I called him "Grundie-Undie Lunde") wouldn't let me. SO, I was at a band/instrument setup and I tried a whole bunch and fell in love with clarinet. Just go to a music store (if you can find one) and ask if you can try some instruments because you are undecided. They should let you and might even help you pick one. GOOD LUCK!!!

I play the clarinet! I love it! I used to want to play saxophone but now with clarinet I get to play a lot of melodies. Personally, I like the cello, but I've never played it or anything. There aren't too many viola players out there though... whatever you want! (I know that doesn't really help but oh well!)

I Play the Viola, but personally i think you should just choose the one that you think is better, make a list of the good things about each one and make other list comparing the bad things. I chose viola, cause it's small and easy to bring around, also because i like the sound, the cello also has a nice rich sound, and they actually get solos.

oh, and also: Sometimes you could chose an instrument and if your instructor has the other one of your choice, you could possibly ask them to teach you how to play it. But it's really your decision. Hope that helps :)

I play the cello, so for me it's a lot better. Plus you don't have to hold it up on your shoulder. For cello, we don't get a lot of the melody...that kinda sucks. But it's still awesome!

even though I'm guessing that you've already chosen, the viola is fun to play (and I know cause I play it) because it isn't extremely high pitched and has a beautiful quality, but if I had to play something different, it would be the cello, cause it has such a rich tone
