Has anyone figured out how to convert videos to the player's highest resolution? The manual reckons you can do wmv (vc1 simple profile)at 480x270 at 1700kbps, but the max dimensions for simple profile appear to be 368x208 with a max bitrate of 384kbps. If I switch up to the main profile at the same dimensions, the video doesn't work.

I bought it from Amazon.co.uk, you can only watch videos widescreen and as far as I know the Walkman can play most video formats whilst also using WMP and itunes for transferring music.

@ClaudiaShavick Don't knock the ipods, they're great devices with a fuller set of features compared to the Sony for $400. I have a smartphone already, so I have no use for the features of the ipods, that means I'd prefer a dedicated music device that has far better sound quality in playing music...the Sony wins in that department. Others may not have a smartphone, so those people would buy an ipod strictly for the purpose of having an all in one solution.

Yes but the PS3 was designed to play games (etc) at the comfort of your own home and this to play music/videos on the go. I've seen laptops that cost as much as an entry level car and yet people still buy them.

I had the same Ipod classic and I have just changed for the Sony X. Believe me there is no comparrison. You will be blown away with the sound quality of the Sony.

Sony does have better sound, than comes zune, than ipod, but i cant afford that sony so i got a ipod. Besides ipod has more accessories, docks, speakers, etc. But sound is most important and i think apple wasnt thinking about that.

For people having problems with video, remeber when converting the file to save it to WQVGA (432x240) resolution as any higher won't play. Also check there are no licenses for that file.

yay i got that 2 days ago, awesome player! defo recommend to anyone who rathers pays for sound quality than applications and better web browsing, which the touch provides. Like i hardly would use the applications and web browsing whilst travelling, sound quality is more important and the sony x series features the best sounding mp4 player on the market.

People buy iPod not because of the sound quality they buy it because it's hip and cool and everybody is carryin it these days even tho the walkman has better sound quality,but the major problem with sony not only mp3/mp4 wise but gaming systems laptops too is they don't advertise anythin and if they do they do it for a limited period of time and only on few channels

@xXkillzoneXx1 Look at the packgnig so messy!! Ipod forever. Actually ipod has cleanest audio of all Mp3 players I tested. Sony and cowon boost bass but becomes muddy if you listen carefully. And listening ipod with my ultimate ears, it is very good in audio quality

Great video. Just got one of these bad boys and love it. Upgraded from the itouch since I was only using it for music and youtube (no apps), so the Sony quality (and more affordable 32GB) sealed the deal.

It's a shame that the sound quality can't be demonstrated in these videos as it's out of this world. But then, Sony do have 30 years experience in this area!

remeber he says with sony you throw music from your pc WINDOWS OR APPLE STUF, with ZUNE, i have the 120Gig model, you only need to use ZUNE , and its not good, bettter then apple software, but its crap, I like how on my PSP i just drag a file , its simpler, so I would love this SONY!

yea man i know zune software has some kinks(as you described and its a comp resource hog swallowing my laptops memory so yea, still zune is improving and the HD looks sick and hopefully they lighten up zune software....Zune is also apple only direct competitor since it has its own software and player.... i really like Zune pass... im not saying nothin about this player and i thiinks its really good!!!

yeah ZUNE is good software, its not that CRAP, but i just prefer not to use any software at all, and just transfer from HDD to MP3 player. The new HD ZUNE looks GREAT!, AWESOME, and I love its still mp3 player and not a mini super computer, so it might be bit cheaper compared to iPod 32 and this Sony 32. Go for it ;)
