@comusnine technically if they had used the actual ending to this story you might have been satisfied, in the actual fairy tale the toy soldier is thrown into the fire upon being returned to the little boy and the ballerina jumps in rather than be with the joker and the toy soldier melts into the shape of a heart
What is this? The plot is totally messed up! This is not what Hans Christian Anderson originally wrote! At the end, the boy is supposed to throw the tin soldier into the fire, but the ballerina(who is made out of paper) gets blown into the fire also and both of them die. All that's left is the sash that the ballerina wore and the soldier gets melted into a heart. The music is fantastic, but why did they have to "sweeten" the story?
@mynameisnterin It's Disney, they do this all the time, hence why a lot of authors are dismayed when they're original works get "Disney-fied". See Bambi...
This has always been my favorite part of Fantasia; the animation is so pretty and the song is fantastic. <333 I know the original story ends sadly, but I like the happier ending better. xD
you know what I'm surprised about, people are complaining that this story is not like the original a little, but, I don't hear anyone complaining about the hunchback of notre dame, where frollo died, but esmeralda and quasimodo lived
The music is from Shostakovich and it's beautiful, but lets not forget that the tale itself it's from Hans Cristian Andersen, same that wrote little mermaid or the ugly duckling.
aw.. :C this isnt the real version were the Tin soldier gets thrown in to the fire and all what is left the day after is a little heart of tin... i dont now why but i like that version better <3
Yeah, the original story is seriously sad. Some kid randomly throws the soldier into the fire and a gust of wind blows the ballerina in after him. To me, this is the better version. <3
i watched a very old cartoon of this when i was little, but that jack in the box freaked me out so much, i turned off the TV! effing bitch ass jack in the box...
We wtched this in Orchestra and we where all laughing because we didn't know WHAT the crap was going on at frist. =))) But I really love the music. <333
I loved this part. I'm not disturbed at all with the ending being changed. It's quite nice. Has anyone noticed other than me that the soldier looks a tiny bit like Woody from Toy Story? The face just looks similar. Who thinks that Disney should make a new one of these?
I think I've actually read the short story this was based off of in the third grade. It was kind of a sad story, because if I remember correctly the soldier ended up burning in the fire too. Fantasia always has such amazing music :)
WOW what AMAZING fortune that soldier had to be that lucky that the fish was caught in that boat who got sent to his town to his HOUSE... i wish stuff happened like that with stuff I lost!!!! :\
the same tale, but only a little different in the end, here is the happyending, the one i heard in my childhood was sad ,very sad,but one thing is the same :they are together forever.
I am reading it at the moment, it's a lobvely story, and Disney certainly portrayed it well. But the ending was all wrong, the tin soldier was meant to have been thrown in the flames, and the dancer was thrown in after him, and they smoldered together, in boundless love. And in the morning hThe maid servant found the tin soldier's ash all in a heart shape, and the golden wing of the dancer next to it.
Boy, do I agree! I'd love to see Disney do a "Romeo and Juliet" with a happy ending. Andersen and Shakespeare really knew how to ruin a story by making it deep and sad and meaningful. If only Disney would do historic epics. I'd like a happy ending to the American Civil War, one where Lincoln goes to Fords Theater with a double-barrel shotgun and blows John Wilkes Boooth's head off. Disney, are you listening?
@mahogonywhisper Well, think about it. The only song that I know of that has a almost ominous ending to it is the Rite of Spring, but that's only because it's about sacrificing a virgin.
Not just that Disney is positive and kid friendly, it would be very hard to find an appropriate piece.
Of course, I doubt that's the reason for the end...
The music of Shostakovich was perfect for this part of the film. Shostakovich was an incredible composer whose music defines 20th century classical music, alongside prokofiev, debussy, poulenc, ravel, barber, ives, stravinsky, bratok, and others. I hope the kids(and their parents) paid attention to the music, and not just all the cool little pictures happening on screen.
that jack in the box is a creep and a douchebag. if i were the tin soldier and a girl i like was the ballerina, i would so kick that jack in the box's ass. the jack in the box sure got what he deserved.
This is my one favorite Piano concertos, and one of the more appropriate choices of story on Disney's part I feel. Better than that atrocious one for Beethoven's 6th on the first Fantasia film.
I don't really feel it's the choice of music that makes it as good as it is, it's how the animation and the music gel together, and how the animation fits into the music.
You know, in the original version of this story, the toy soldier and the doll both get thrown in the fire, and the nanny makes a locket out of their melted pieces. It's extremely sad.
How can you compare these? This one is a classical animated fairy tale short movie and Camp Rock or HSM are musical movies for teen ages. They are just to different. Can't you think further than this stupid "The one is good, the other is bad"-thing?
Oh, and btw... you wouldn't believe me, how much HSM helped me in my life. I really wonder how one can say, this movie isn't educational.
