@vograd It was not much as "first" as more like the second battle, even if counting only these involving Russians directly. The first Russian attack on Grozny was actually by thousands of their black-ops forces with 40 T-72s and scores of other armored vehicles on 26 November 1994, it got beaten back entirely within 24 hours. Few people outside of Chechnya even heard about it or remember now. (Russian society appears to forget it entirely and people in the west never cared all that much.)

@vograd Oh, and yes, Chechnya did win this war. In 1996 there was a ceasefire, during which all the Russian forces withdrew taking their adminstration with them, then a peace treaty was signed in 1997 and so it was all over. An as of Grozny, in the meantime anti-Russian forces also took back the city and then kept it until the ceasefire (and then until 2000, of course).

They are also not the same Russians that fought in WW2, I would have to say the main reason for their lack of "backbone" lies in the leadership. Even in WW2 the Soviets had huge regimental organization problems etc.. and were no where near the Germans in tactics even at the end of the war. Even the squads of German civilians that were used in the last days of war probably fought better then the average Russian. The difference was Stalin, the iron fist.

So one could say with the current lack of "iron" leadership the Soviet Union is in quite a weak state, since never before has it had such a pacifist government. I cant imagine the Russian Tsar putting up with the "American" subversive involvement in Georgia, or other important tactical regions. They also massacred people in the streets (literally machinegunned a crowd at Ostankino TV, including foreign journalists, a German was shot by in the head a sniper when pulling a wounded collegue). Thousands of people were killed or injured, some say that even 2000 were killed.

So Grozny was nothing new for them, just on a much greater scale.
