Some of this sounds reminiscent of the final song in the 'DaVinci Code' soundtrack; the strings and the horns from about 2:00 onward; does Hans Zimmer like throwing in sections similar to his past soundtracks?
i guess since he is directly challenging our beliefs and norms he can be considered evil by our standards. but the argument the joker is making is that he has no standards, to him its all just arbitrary rules that were set up in our society by people. he is simply writing his own.
balrogthane, i disagree. i don't see the joker as the ultimate personification of evil, but rather chaos. evil can have several different definitions. it can either mean to be morally backward, or to cause harm and discomfort. but morality changes with social customs and norms. im not suggesting that there is a society somewhere where the joker's actions would be considered acceptable, no. im saying that the joker is simply not abiding by our rules and disregarding our "schemes". Con'd above
Ledger's Joker is probably the most thoroughly evil character I've ever seen in a movie. He not only has no reason, no explanation for his evil, he has no particular physical goal. He wants to corrupt everyone.
An interesting review I read correlated him with Satan, which does make sense; like the Devil, the Joker wants to see everyone else fall; he wants to tempt all of us and see us all fail.
I think that Sweeney Todd was a Rorschach-like charachter, or a V charachter (V, from V for Vendetta - he did evil things, but for a justifiable aim.
The Joker is much deeper then that. He is a post-modernist baddie. He did evil things, for no reason. Because there is no meta-narrative in life to follow. Who dictates morals? Why should we follow these morals? And so on...
I agree, Sweeney was dark, but he was as much a victim and a villian, you feel pity for Sweeney in the movie, but for the Joker you can't becaus ehe has no reason for anything, which is what makes him much more darker than Sweeney or any other villian that appeared in the last years. The Joker represents the part in humans that just wants to let go and be horrible and achieve what one wants at any means possible.
To my knowledge "Sweeney Todd" was 2007, and 2008 is far from over. Oscars are not necessarily a better indication of a film's quality than other awards, they are simply more respected. I enjoyed "Sweeney Todd" and "Hancock," but "The Dark Knight" is an unequivocal masterpiece.
To bad the teenagers didn't think so. Cause at Teen Choice Awards 2008 for best Superhero film of the year Hancock was chosen over the Dark Knight & was worst for best villian Sweeney Todd was chosen over the Joker what is the matter with Teenagers today! what do they day see in Hancock & Sweeney Todd.
First of all who gives a rats ass about the Teen Choice Awards. What do they know? Secondly it is way too early to judge superheroes films and best villains for this year. The years is just barely half over. Besides I think Sweeney Todd was last year. And Hancock is more of a comedy than a superhero film so 'these' teens would rather watch a comedy over the Batman. I am sure you only mean some teens are like that. I, myself am a teen and I really didn't care for Hancock.
I wanted to see Hancock, but even if I did, The Dark Knight brings up so many moral issuses that really made you think. The stroy was good, I don't even need to explain, it was a perfect movie overall. Teens Choice Award are really for 8-11 year olds anyways.
I think the best awnser to that is that teens are not the majority it is those under 12 along with older preps that make most of the voting and descicisons so mainly those that voted might not have seen dark knight due to age as well as Sweeny Todd was done by that one guy that teen girls seem to like
Granted, Depp did do a very good Todd, but Sweeney Todd as a character isn't so much a villian as he is a victim with a twisted sense of morals and righteousness. The Joker is an infinitely better villian (coming from a Sweeney Todd addict) because there's no justification you can really give the Joker, and because of that he's so much eviler.
But the thing is, Dark Knight was PG-13 here, and Todd was R; how could it even be voted for in the TEEN choice awards if it was 18 and over to see?
I truely loved this movie. I gotta be honest here. When I first heard about batman being remade I was like it was going to be trash before I reading anything about it and before knowing about how great Bale is. I seen Part 1 on dvd and said DAMN I should have went to the movies to see this one. After that I knew the next would be be great. And it was not only great it exceeded expectations. Batman blows ALL marvel movies away. Would say more but out of text space LOL. U get my point. peace
"Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight."
man, this was such a good movie, probably the best one this year, i hope Heath gets his nomination, i think he deserves it for his performance as the Joker, it was spectacular

Hancock was terrible, I agree. Why would anyone choose it over Dark Knight. Sweeney Todd was really good, but the joker was just as twisted.
To be honest the Oscars will be the most legitimate.

Chunks of this track sounds vaguely familiar to Chevaliers de Sangreal (Knights of Royal Blood) that Hans Zimmer did for a movie prior. :o
