Look at government revenues compared to government spending.

So since we ran a 1.85 trillion dollar deficit last year, we need to cut about 1.6 trillion still.

That's being cut, and it didn't just give tax cuts to the rich, it lowered the tax bracket for everyone. It also cut capital gains taxes. Federal revenue from income taxes increased yearly for the next 6 years after those cuts.
So when your taxes increase by 3% on your income and they DOUBLE on your retirement accounts (401K's, etc.) I don't want to hear any whining.

I agree that is part of the problem. The debt is huge and the interest alone will soon be 1 trillion dollars a year. The government needs to facilitate the generation of private sector jobs to increase tax revenues and decrease the debt. Some major cuts in spending will also be necessary. The government does not create taxable wealth or any kind of wealth at all. The Treasury Dept. website has the scary facts of this equation. Look at government revenues compared to government spending.

The gov't is so used to getting what it asks of the FED.
Congress, force the FED to create for the government a _maximum_ of X billion dollars a year via their magic money wand and then make the gov't tax us directly for the rest.
Here's an idea - give Mr taxpayer the option to pick, at minimum, 10 government programs that said taxpayer wants his tax money to go to. Let the programs nobody supports die off.
