I like the musicians, but the singer isn't a funk singer. She seems...dry, for lack of a better word. Her voice doesn't have the raw, gritty quality that makes funk "funky"- the vibrato doesn't help either. Her talents may be better used in pop music or adult contemporary.
@SleepwalkerFirst I'm not suggesting that her voice is bad. Her singing style just doesn't itself to funk. To reiterate my previous comment- her voice is too "clean"- lacking the rawness, the grittiness for funk. Again, her talents would be better served in a different genre. I have no issues with the musicians. Just my very humble opinion...
I'm sure they meant well....but I'll just consider this the lackluster version done by musicians who can definitely read music...but if this they're effort at putting their soul into a song...it's lacking soul.....
@alxvb Are you deaf??? That would make things clearer to me, my advise see them live and then tell the world theyve got no S.O.U.L never gonna happen..
@alxvb Good call, the band is really tight but quite static, and the singer is suited to a different genre. Take Sharon Jones as a current artist with a tight band behind her, she has a 'balls out' stye of singing which suits the genre. Currie does well in 'Lover and a Friend' but you can see the other singer is absolutely BLEEDING his soul while Currie could do well to let go a bit. The difference is 'head soul' vs 'heart soul'.
@alxvb i agree too man, i was just listening to james and putting this on rite after didn't even compare in the least bit, that singer should get a new bag or something, bluesy funk ain't really sounding like her thing. her voice is still great to listen to tho. but the main thing... ain't even the original beat! the best part about that song!!
